Titanfall - Respawn Entertainment's first game

My reply wasn't as much bullshit as yours. You seem to indicate (using poor formatting and grammar) that the 6v6 is there because of the xbox 360, which is not true at all. I cited BF3 because it's a more demanding engine than source (which is old) and they did 12v12 on the last gen consoles with larger maps and vehicles and shit. Did they not?

So how could 6v6 be a limitation when they're using such an old engine? Makes no sense.

? Can't even say you like a game on this forum without someone jumping down your throat saying how you're the downfall of gaming. Please.

BF3 is 64 player's on PC.
I didn't say I thing about you "being the downfall of gaming", what are you going on about?
You got some pent up aggression about something, just chill out, go outside or something. So hostile.

Why are people so fervently defending this crap? Save your breath. Everyone knows EA is going to pay $$$ to get good reviews and it will sell fine. If you are one of those defending 'design decisions' of Titanfall and pre-ordered the game - bugger off. You are exactly what is wrong with PC gaming now and you should feel terrible for ruining the industry.

i tell ya, i just feel awful.
p.s. i bought Premium in BF3 and BF4. oh the humanity.

Yeah my BF4 experience has stopped me from pre-ordering anything for a while.

To Silver's point, people will defend anything they have an emotional attachment to. Go read the BF4 thread. So many people pointed out the lag, CTDs, shitty netcode from 13 years ago, and yet people defend BF4 religiously. Often telling the people posting about the issues, that the problems they are seeing don't matter or even don't exist.

PC gamers are a strange lot. Seems like every game is either the greatest thing since Doom or the worst thing since Big Rigs

agreed...PC gamers are at the extreme ends of the spectrum...they want everything to either be revolutionary and/or have amazing graphics or they hate it...there's no middle ground...why can't a game just be fun and decent?

The way I see it, if a game is fun, then what the fuck else matters?

I really hope the people here whining about how the game isn't "cerebral" enough only have shit like Civ 3 (not Civ 5 because that's for casuals amiright) and ArmA installed.

hehe :)

I guess the game will be successful for the COD crowd, other than that it really isn't anything special. As people get better at the game I am sure there'll be interesting varied gameplay, but I don't think by anything astounding. Just as the RPS review puts it, the game isn't very meaningful - in terms of compelling combat. For a 6 v 6 type of game, the game would be better off in the hands of a studio like Turtle Rock and without the bot grind. Their style, as seen from the L4D franchise, offers unforgiving gameplay which is extremely satisfying and rewarding for those who have built competence and can work with others as a team. But you know, that style of gameplay just doesn't appeal to the COD type gamers.

This. Evolve looks amazing. Of course I though the same of Titanfall before I played it. But if Evolve is what 'we' think it will be, could be a game changer.

It is fun (to a point), but I can see it become stale with the current mechanics. We'll see how they keep it fresh, though.

Funnily enough, ArmA 2 and 3 are probably my most-played games. :p

The only reason that arma is any good is because it has an amazing mod community. not because its uber "cerebral". The majority of devs seem to have forgotten this. look at the battlefield series, all of the games up to and including bf2 were amazing, mainly due to their modding community. then EA as usual ruined the series by not releasing a sdk for bf3/4. And i dont have much hope for titanfall doing any different.

Pricing drives everything in the PC landscape. The right game at the wrong price is the wrong game, and Titanfall competes with a lot of excellent games at the $15, $20 and $30 price points. In the console market, it competes with all other $60 titles, but it has much fiercer competition on the PC.

I wasn't referring to you though, you've been pretty reasonable throughout.

However, I agree it could become stale if there is no "end game" of sorts. Without player-hosted dedicated servers, these type of games live and die through a competitive ladder system.

But... that's not even close to what I was getting at.

Every game becomes stale eventually. Does it matter to me? No, because I'm having fun with the game right now and if I worry about whether or not I'm going to be playing it still in a few months, then I'd never buy anything except for MMOs.

This. Value means more in PC gaming.
The $60 price skews perception of games and flaws are magnified if present.

Crysis 3 was meh at $60, but awesome for $5-15.

Bingo. Despite my complaints about Titanfall, despite the clear catering to console kids that the developer is intent on with this title, I'd still probably buy it for $29.95 warts and all simply for the mindless arena aspect and to be able to drop into it a few minutes at a time when the mood strikes.

But $60, enwurd please. In fairness though I suppose we should be grateful that they deigned to make a PC version at all in this console driven market.

Very good point, though in terms of being "cerebral" I would say there is a lot more strategy involved to be successful in ArmA, depending on what you are doing. Also, the gameplay itself is far more complex.

Really though we are comparing apples to oranges based on what both titles (ArmA and Titanfall) are trying to do. The only real similarity is that they're both FPS.

Ah. Many of us want a game with some depth and longevity, not a throwaway game with no features that lasts a month or two before the playerbase moves on, and that's why you see people questioning the $60 price, player count, etc.

There are plenty of very legitimate criticisms about EA but throwing down blanket statements for all games published by them regardless of who is developing it (Respawn in this case) and especially in this case since there are a decent number who tried it (for free), and liked it, does make some of the people in this thread seem very bigoted.

Maxis had a pretty good track record until recently too.

Name a single, high visibility EA published game that has exceeded expectations in the past few years.

Spore? Sim City? BF4? Mass Effect 3?

All games from devs OWNED by EA. Respawn is not owned by EA. They're not owned by anyone at the moment.

If I knew there would still be a multiplayer community 6 months from now, I would buy it.
I'd be willing to wager that Titanfall's community rises to the top 3 on Steam within the first 6 months of launch.

Considering Respawn Studios isn't owned by EA and is in business with the EA Partners branch of EA .. this has nothing to do with the conversation. EA has quite literally absolutely zero say in Titanfall's game development whatsoever.

I assume you mean Origin. Unless Steam now tracks games accurately when you add external games.

I do agree it is a value question. Even at $45 which has been the sale prices. This game isn't enough for me. Matchmaking based off my experiences in the past with COD is a big concern. Game modes drop off so quick on the PC without the freedom of the server browser that I don't want to be stuck with another title I put 10 hours into and can no longer find a match in the game mode I enjoy.

lol

I guess Respawn wrote a multi-million dollar check and told EA to plaster their game all over EA's site, E3, national commercials and other forms of media.
Advertising > Game development. That's difference between Indie and AAA games.

EA tells you when to release a game, what audience it should target and what platforms it should support. Why? Because they paid for the advertising and the financial advancement.
MS said we want this game and cut out Sony. You really think Respawn would make such a decision to cutout PS on the FIRST game without money being apart of it?

They're told what to do once they accept that check.

Jesus go shit in another thread about fucking EA already.

If your going to talk shit, talk shit about the fucking game.

"Zero say" eh. Like EA taking a bribe from Microsoft to kill the Playstation version.

i hope someone is taking notes for when the next cod comes out and many of the people crusading in defense of this game are trashing cod (maybe cuz you can't run on walls or be big robots or use pistols that line up headshots for you).

With everyone seeing how awesome Titanfall is there's hope it will kill cod in 2-3 years. Definitely not this year, it's a damn shame what Treyarch/Sledgehammer/Activision/What's left of infinity ward has to CoD.

On a brighter note I just finished reserving my PC and Console version of Titanfall :D.

agreed...but they don't tell the developer about gameplay features, maps, content etc...the developer 'develops' the game while the publisher 'publishes' and advertises it...some publishers have more sway then others...it's not like Titanfall would have difficulty securing another publisher...

this game seriously needs to add Real PC features like letting people set physics particle limits. (in my case I would just set them to never vanish.)

set draw distance. the pop in is horrible just let everybody set it to render the whole level distance the pcs can take it.

it's not much of a looker. the game runs at stupid dumb frame rate on my system I am looking for anything to add eye candy or slow it down and there is no options.

they need to put something in anything that will take advantage of pcs. right now it is the same as the xbone only not at 720p .

If Titanfall is popular Respawn could go almost anywhere, when they were starting up the options were pretty limited. It wasn't just about the amount of money they would need to develop the game and support their start up, Respawn also wanted the ability to retain ownership of both themselves and the IP. The vast majority of major publishing deals like this end with the developer signing over the rights to their creation to the publisher that funded it.

Huh? I don't want CoD being replaced by CoD:Robots. That solves nothing :p
