The Wii U is done

Funny enough my in-laws bought our daughter a Wii U for Christmas. I got to play around with it a bit. Overall it's a decent design but very "meh" overall. Definitely not worth the $300 they are asking. Setup was easy enough. They bought the Wind Waker bundle. It does look better in HD but it's still a very old game. Nothing you couldn't get done in dolphin on a pc. Super Mario 3D World was better. It's a fun kids game. Not something I would ever play alone but it was fun to mess around as a family.

The controller is a complete gimmick and just a pain. It's massively sized and you don't get much extra function with it at all. Touch is nice for inventory in WW but I prefer Sony's approach with Killzone which lets you use touch as a selection method without having a massive controller.

It'll sit in the entertainment center, but outside of my daughter using it I think it's going to gather dust. Nothing wow'd me about it at all.

Got my family (and me ;) ) a WiiU for Christmas. Also got 2 additional Wiimote+ controllers, matching Mario(red), Luigi(green) + 2 nunchucks. In addition, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Sonic Lost World, Rayman Legends, New Super Mario Bros U, New Super Luigi U, Disney Infinity + 12 characters lol ...

We're good for a little while.

edit. My in-laws bought my 4 year old a 2DS + Mario Kart 7, Donkey Kong Country Returns and New Super Mario Bros 2 lol

Dolphin is not a valid excuse, especially since it promotes illegal activity.

Dolphin is the shit. I get to play wii games on the only real gaming console of note the PC. It could promote clubbing baby sea lions for all I care if it allows me to play Fire Emblem at 1080p on my PC I'm all over it.

Considering I own a wii and Wii-u now plus 2 copies of fire emblem I'd say I'm well within my right to use dolphin for a better experience....Plus save load is so nice in Fire Emblem on max difficulty.

I tried Dolphin earlier this year. I believe next-Jin recommended so I had everything working. I always feel strangely uncomfortable playing console games at my computer desk. Not from a legality standpoint...I was trying Xenoblade Chronicles and I own both the game and a Wii console...it just feels weird to me.

I originally played Assassin's Creed on the 360 and even though I also bought the PC version, it feels strange to play it on sitting at my desk in front of a 24" LCD with a USB 360 controller. I've never been able to figure out the source of that discomfort but I have this strong mental distinction between console and PC gaming and their respective environments. It's probably a form of mental illness. If I could find a decent 30" gaming display for my PC I could probably get over it. ;)

I should add that this same mental disorder prevents me from connecting a PC to my 65" TV. Sometimes being crazy is a real drag, man.

The WiiU is so dead that the online services have been down/unstable due to unexpected volume of traffic for the past 2 days.

I got into Dolphin when I had my Wii and just couldn't play it due to horrible graphics. I used my HTPC with XBMC /advance launcher. After it was setup it was all pretty automated, I never use my mouse and keyboard unless I have to install something or do some servicing.

I still couldn't play the majority of games though, I just cannot stand how they tied in motion with some of their games. DKC for example was stupid, they could have at least given the ground slap a button to use as opposed to only being able to shake the Wii mote.

You can setup the wii motes to the PC if you really wanted to. It takes a little bit more work but I've seen it done.

It's quite simple really. I have the same problem as you do. The distinct difference is this: couch > office chair for console games. We've been sitting on couches to play console games since the days of the Odyssey so it's now ingrained into our psyche.

I could never play Wii games on the computer. The computer is where I play Dead Island, Counter Strike, Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite, Unreal Tourament... etc etc. The couch is where I play Mario and Zelda. I don't care if I could play Twilight Princess on my PC at 1080p... just wouldn't feel right. Nothing like sitting down in front of a big-ass Tv and playing games... PC games are in a whole different class. However, the verdict is out on the forthcoming Steam Machines.

I did, used a Bluetooth chipset that was compatible and had it set to use real Wiimote. It worked fine I just didn't like the controls of some of the titles.

We're talking about the WiiU. WiiU has much better controls for all of the games I've played so far. Almost none of them rely on gimmicky wiimote controls.

I don't think WiiU games will ever go too wild with motion controls. I can't imagine Nintendo forcing people to swing that tablet around. Wiimotes are really only for multiplayer/split-screen games (Nintendoland) and legacy Wii software.

With only about 12 hours logged on the new Wii U, I can't understand how anyone could not like this console and some of the games that are available for it. Really, unless you're a very cynical, jaded gamer with a prejudice against Nintendo, I don't get it.

We had family over last night and got in about 3 hours of multi-player New Super Mario Bros. U. I crashed after they left and my wife was up until after midnight playing solo. While she worked today I finally got into Wind Waker HD until she booted me off for more Mario when she got home from work.

Maybe once the novelty wears off, it won't be a big deal. And I get that what Nintendo offers is not to everyone's taste. But, man, this thing is fun. I REALLY hope Nintendo achieves a level of success with the Wii U that doesn't force them to dramatically change their identity.

According to VGAChartz Dec14th Hardware Global Sales, and with no PS4 released in Japan yet...The Wii U Global sales were lower than PS4/XB1 and PS360. Does this finally tell Nintendo fans that their Wii U system cannot compete with either THIS gen or LAST gen?

I personally think it does clearly, and for me the most interesting part of these sales numbers is that the PS4 had the most global sales for that week (Dec 14th, 2013) and also isn't even available in its homeland of Japan. It still managed top sales globally.

Perhaps the best news for the Wii U is that at this rate is that it will finally hit the 5 million sales mark by 2014. Then again, 5 million is failed console numbers so there's still a big question for the Nintendo hardcore supporters, and they will flip flop as much as they can towards the subject like a fishy out of the pond.

I'm gonna speculate a Wii bit here, and wildly guess that when the PS4 gets done releasing in Japan (February 22, 2014) it should be only a matter of weeks before the PS4 has the sales king crown for this gen on permanent lock...I mean it was already on lock, but people need to see the numbers before they can quiet their mouths, and call it a fail I guess.

The reports for the Japanese pre-orders of PS4 claims that it sells out in minutes. It's going to be another rude awakening for Wii U/Nintendo supporters. I think most are in shock as it stands, but I think by next Christmas all these Wii U diehard supporters will finally see the big picture, and I think they'll have learned a lot about just being a hardcore Nintendo fan and how that blinds you into jumping and buying a less than stellar console that won't last.

Wow, so much fail in that post Teletran8.

Let's start of with your numbers since you are using VGChartz. First off, you claim that the Wii U may finally hit 5 million by 2014. For all we k ow it might have already hit 5 million. As of December 14, the Wii U has sold 4.75 million consoles (with .26 million sold the week ending December 14. Global sales have consistently been at 0.20 million the past few months and combined with the holidays I'm willing to bet that the Wii U hits 5 million by December 21 which means 5 million in 2013 (or just over a year in the consoles life).

PS4/XBone are selling as they have both just been released and are the hype right now. Just wait until the honeymoon is over and sales will Lev out. The 360 and PS3 both had large install bases so it would be expected a lot of the first buyers would be those upgrading their consoles.

You state that 5 million is a failed console. Is the Wii U discontinued? Last I checked it was only a year old and after finally having more games released, the sales have risen to 200,000+ consoles per week globally.

I know right? I mean the 360 was last in sales last gen. Just could not compete. OMG, WHAT A FAILURE!!!

Let me school you on what being a "hardcore" Nintendo fan means: It means spending a few hundred bucks to enjoy the exclusives that are available only on their hardware.

Let me school you on what being a "hardcore" Sony PS fan means: It means spending a few hundred bucks to enjoy the exclusives that are available only on their hardware.

Let me school you on what being a "hardcore" Microsoft Xbox fan means: It means spending a few hundred bucks to enjoy the exclusives that are available only on their hardware.

Let me be clear and I speak for every Wii U owner that is and ever will be: <insert Nintendo exclusive game of choice> will provide the exact same level of enjoyment whether the Wii U sells 5 million consoles or 500 millions consoles.

You act as if people who buy the Wii U can only buy a Wii U. I assure you, when the PS4 and XB1 have some games available that are worth a shit, Nintendo owners can buy those consoles as well. I can only assume, however, given your jank-ass PC specs that buying more than one console per generation is beyond your limited financial means. Have you even bought a PS4 or XB1 yet? I'm guessing not since you're so intent on counting lines of resolution and megahertz and sales numbers because you're afraid you'll make the wrong decision.

Good luck with that.

Stop! You had me at janky ass PC! haha I used to be a PC gamer until I realized it would make a better Media Streaming device to my PS3 ;) 5 TB of media is nice. That janky thang emulates Gamecube and Wii games with AA and higher resolutions than the console NEVER could think of also, and on the cheap. Yet that didn't impress me enough...all that res and pixels can't make those janky Nintendo games better than what they are...that is true.

Do YOU get what is going ON?

The last gen PS3 is more dominant NOW than the Wii U. Do you understand? AN 8 YEAR OLD CONSOLE can wipe the floor with your precious NEXT GEN NINTENDO.

The PS3 also has the more appealing games, or else it wouldn't out sell the Wii U during the holiday season now would it? 264,000+ Wii U's in a week in December is absolutely under par when the 8 year old PS3 is getting 370k don't you think? Then the PS4 is getting 370k+ as well for that week. If the PS4 was available in Japan we could possibly be talking half a million PS4's sold in a week globally, alongside those same PS3 sales. There's no point in talking about that now is there?

You might be right in that sales don't matter because you will be getting a Mario, DK, MK, Zelda, SSBBU, Wii Party, Wii Sports for the next half a decade....and that is all you or anyone should desire. I know they'll get more than those titles, but I dunno. 5 years of THAT? No.

That's what I'm saying, I also wish that the Wii had HD because then I could see a reason playing old Wii games too. But a Wii game at 480p, on a 1080p screen just looks like garbage, and a joke. Yes I'm still on PS3 and I'm finishing games. I finished Ni No Kuni yesterday, what a great JRPG game! The Wii was pretty bad on JRPG's and hardcore fight games and horror and FPS and...see where this is going :) I'm not gonna spend 20 minutes breaking down for everyone what they lacked, but they still lack it. E.o.S.=PS has the best selection for everyone, and I don't even think that is an opinion anymore! Look AT them SALES for proof! 5 million might be good enough for YOU and people that think Mario is the only game in town, but for me it's not anything I would want from my next gen console or last gen for that matter.

I'm not a JRPG player but didn't the wii have quite a handful of AAA Jrpg games?

I'm not a JRPG player but didn't the wii have quite a handful of AAA Jrpg games?

Only in comparison to PS3 and xbox 360...an even then it was probably close to about the same maybe less. If you compared it to the PS2, PS1, or SNES it had virtually nothing.

I play 90% JRPG....hand held market was the shit. PS3 and xbox360 were shit.

Do YOU get what is going ON?

Yeah, I get what's going on. Not sure you do. What exactly does "wipe the floor" even mean in the context of console sales? It means shit, precisely. The miserable 480p Wii outsold the PS3 and 360 by around 20 million units.

The PS3 also has the more appealing games, or else it wouldn't out sell the Wii U during the holiday season now would it? 264,000+ Wii U's in a week in December is absolutely under par when the 8 year old PS3 is getting 370k don't you think? Only to reiterate my point about sales number not telling the whole tale. The PS3 is selling well this holiday because of it's price point...$199 this holiday season. Hell, the $99 Wii sold almost 100,000 units in a week. Of course the PS4 outsold everything but the 3DS. I guess this is because of the PS4's AMAZING game selection.

No.

That's not all I desire. If Nintendo can't deliver anything beyond their traditional in-house offerings, I'll buy another platform. I've already been over this.

That's what I'm saying, I also wish that the Wii had HD because then I could see a reason playing old Wii games too. But a Wii game at 480p, on a 1080p screen just looks like garbage, and a joke. I have a PS3 also and huge backlog of great games I'm looking forward to enjoying. I also have The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles to play on the Wii.

I don't think anyone in this thread that is pro-Nintendo is suggesting that "Mario is the only game in town". You can't seem to shake your fanboy, there can be only one, perspective. So let me ask you:

Do YOU get what is going ON?

I don't think you do.

Just picked up Mass Effect 3 on Wii U and it's fantastic. No perceive able lag, great graphics, great game. I already had 3 on PC but I have to say I prefer it on Wii U. Loving the Wii U so far.

I'm not understanding why people are using Wii U sales data as a positive. Ya'll are citing an increase in sales like it's in a vacuum in the middle of February. From a historical perspective it is still faltering pretty badly for the holidays.

I'm just waiting for the Q1 data to start coming in and especially the numbers 2 weeks after Mario Kart and SSBU.

Just bought Nes remix and received mario brothers U. I never played a console that much. Its really a great system for me so far.

What difference does it make?

As long as the Wii U doesn't do so poorly as to cause Nintendo to kill the platform, who cares?

The only real problem I have with Nintendo and the Wii U is my wife yelling me for walking in front of the TV when she's trying to time a jump with Mario. :p

I doubt they would kill it outright, even with terrible sales they would support it for another 2 years or so until they released a new console. I've never said Nintendo is done, they have billions and can carry the Wii U just fine on their own. It's just certainly going to be the weakest console for them in their history in my opinion. It's the trending pattern and I am very much curious how their next console will perform.

I agree. I don't know if they'll ever be able to rise to the level of sales achieved by Sony and Microsoft. I think they're a niche product with a selection of software that only appeals to a fraction of the gaming community. They definitely caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii but all the people who bought the Wii just for Wii Fit aren't likely to buy a Wii U for Wii U Fit. What would be the point?

I'm extremely glad they dominate the handheld market and that the 3DS has sold well or they would likely be in a lot of trouble financially. Like I said earlier, I just want them to do well enough to keep providing their particular brand of product that I enjoy. People that are rooting for them to fail piss me off.

Not sure why you and teletran8 are still posting...got bored with your next gen console already¿

I'm not going to lie, seeing Mario, Zelda and other titles on my PS4 would bring a big ass smile to my face.

Just saying :D

It's fun embarrassing you to be honest. You have yet to refute anything I have ever posted and when you tried you failed terribly with a link that made your entire post look foolish.

I'm deployed overseas away from the family, so I got nothing but time and school work to deal with.

Wait scratch that, it's New Years, South Korea with their Soju, and the legal drinking limit is still 21 for Americans when 75% of the soldiers are under that...... brb

lol you are the only one who's been embarrassed....by your own stupidity....

I have a PS3 also and huge backlog of great games I'm looking forward to enjoying. I also have The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles to play on the Wii.

I can emulate both those games on my janky ass PC with Dolphin @ 1080p or higher and 4x AA/AF. LMAO! Was doing that over a couple years ago, because I remember trying Punch-Out!! on it. That was 2010 release. Yes dooooo have fun playing with 480p janky stock graphics in TLS and Xenoblade Chronicles on your Wii U. :D

Just picked up Mass Effect 3 on Wii U and it's fantastic. No perceive able lag, great graphics, great game. I already had 3 on PC but I have to say I prefer it on Wii U. Loving the Wii U so far.

Don't you wish you had the Mass Effect Trilogy Blu-Ray for PS3? Because you do know your missing 2 games out of the series that the Wii U system will never make available on. Oh yeah you already have them on PC so you don't need them, but then why get the 3rd again? Great logic man.

Just bought Nes remix and received mario brothers U

Another remake on that Wii U. I would have never thought they would try that!?! They make so many remakes they should just call it the remake machine...and remake it already.

What difference does it make?

As long as the Wii U doesn't do so poorly as to cause Nintendo to kill the platform, who cares?

When you go under 10 million...u die a little like Sega in the gaming console universe is "what". Sega died with the Sega CD/32X and had trouble with the Saturn. They died and survived a couple times, but it catches up with you as a gaming console manufacturer. 20 million Wii U sales in 5 years will be a feat for the Wii U, and it is asking too much. I wish it were Microsoft in this situation, but Nintendo had the option to make the most high tech gaming console, and choose cheap and janky with a tablet. Which I can't figure out why it's not doing well selling, especially with supporters like yourself and more remakes than any console I've heard of....wait....a.....minute......!!!! Atari did this with the 5200 and 7800 look how that turned out? Remaking games over and over, and releasing terrible games like Wii Party U/Wii Sports Club/E.T on Atari. .

The Atari THE BAD: Because Atari got so thoroughly squashed by Nintendo there's no good games from all the famous 3rd party developers like Konami, Capcom, etc. This is partly due to Nintendo's draconian licensing agreements which forbade 3rd parties from releasing games for other systems. It is probably also partly due to 3rd parties getting tired of spending all this money to make an Atari game and then getting shafted when the bottom of the market falls out. You know I've got no sympathy for Atari because they were the leaders in the home console business, thus they could have easily stopped the crash in 84 by putting out good games and good systems. But they didn't, they put out garbage.

Doesn't this sound familiar?

History does repeat itself indeed, Evolution sucks sometimes too. Now you might not think so but what Nintendo did back in the 80's to the Atari, Sony has been doing since it launched the PS1, and is now doing to your Nintendo brand now that Miyamoto is retiring soon. There's little to no steam left in your Ninty brand, and in a earily similar fashion to when Sega lost its steam when an important member was not there any longer for them.

The NES made its name off of making the Atari look bad, SNES then tried to make the Genesis look bad, and they succeeded. Then came along the Playstation, and put them both in their new evolved situation. Care to see what has happened in that time yet? You can choose to be blind to gaming history, but please try to think about these topics.

I'm not going to lie, seeing Mario, Zelda and other titles on my PS4 would bring a big ass smile to my face.

Just saying :D

That would likely kills the franchises. They'd all likely turn into God Of War Clones like Castlevaina turned into.

The Castlevaina of my youth has been utterly decimated by modern graphics. If you want high graphics learn was a PC does and play FPS and Western style RPG's. A strong focus on gameplay needs to be the highest priority in the console world...which I feel Nintendo understands and other companies don't.

Umm, you know its the developers who make the game not console owners. A Nintendo game on a Sony or MS platform would still be a Nintendo game.

Don't you wish you had the Mass Effect Trilogy Blu-Ray for PS3? Because you do know your missing 2 games out of the series that the Wii U system will never make available on. Oh yeah you already have them on PC so you don't need them, but then why get the 3rd again? Great logic man.

Another remake on that Wii U. I would have never thought they would try that!?! They make so many remakes they should just call it the remake machine...and remake it already.

History does repeat itself indeed, Evolution sucks sometimes too. do you actually think before you post or do you just post without thinking

1. Nintendo has no debt to speak of and at the end of fiscal 2013, 5+ billion in cash. When Sega went Tango Uniform, they were flat out broke.

2. So you admit to stealing Wii titles that you emulate on dolphin? Nice...

3. NES did not make Atari look bad, Atari did by allowing all sorts of crap games. NES came out AFTER Atari had already begun it's decline. Nice try though. NES was intro'd in the us in '85, video game market crash 81-83....

4. Genesis was technically inferior to the SNES in every way except for CPU speed. Less colors, lower res, worse sound... and lets not forget those Nintendon't commercials

Yeah, going software only has made Sega quite the gaming powerhouse.... not. I just feel that the same would happen with Nintendo if they cross-licensed their titles and Zelda, Mario, Kirby, etc. would fade away...

My biggest fear is that Nintendo has completely shot themselves in the foot. Developers are a fickle lot. I'm not sure they will be able to draw them back in when/if they come out with a new console in the future.

It's sad because I much prefer the Wiimote/nunchuck controllers over the standard gamepads. Even after testing it in the store, I like the "tablet" controller better. I guess I just really hate the Playstation/XBOX controllers. Any game consoles that use controllers other than the standard "gamepad" layout are really nice IMO. Maybe when the Kinect evolves to being able to play all games just using hand and body motions, I'll look at them, but as long as gameplay focuses on a sedentary (sit the couch for hours) gameplay... not really interested...

Except when its a developer who also makes a console. Nintendo would have to redo how they program and make everything. The temptation to use other games a framework would be rather high.

Plus they have far less incentive to keep the quality as high. I am pretty sure Nintendo would be lost if they didn't make their own console.

maybe for a bit but they'd have the ability still to control their content and make the best quality games they could with the only difference being that it isn't their hardware running it.

I haven't read every post here, but am wondering:

Why do people want Nintendo to make games for ps/xbox/pc? Is it because they simply don't want to buy their consoles or because they really believe nintendo will fail as a company if they don't? Or, some other reason?

I think it's primarily because they don't want to purchase the console, but would still like to play one or two of Nintendo's big franchise titles.

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

#1. Nintendo wouldn't need to use "framework" whatever that even means. If you mean engine, its unlikely but they might take that road and use someone else's engine. No biggie as most games don't use their own engines but either in house ones made for multiple games or a 3rd party solution. As for design elements, Nintendo would still make Nintendo games. Nothing would force them to change.

#2. Less incentive to keep quality as high? That is a pretty ridiculous statement. As at that point software would be the only thing that drives profit they would very much so have incentive to create high quality software so people will keep buying more.

You not getting it and it not making sense are two different things.
