NCASE M1: a crowdfunded Mini-ITX case (updates in first post)

For 90% of the backer, it will not arrive until December.

Thanks for that. I went ahead and ordered my new GTX 780 SC to take advantage of the holiday bundle, but I think i'm going to wait until closer to Black Friday to order the mobo, processor, PSU, and hard drives. My concern is return windows closing before I get a chance to actually put the system together.

Oh man, it seems like we're getting our cases way sooner than I expected. I truly thought January was going to be the soonest priority backers would be getting their cases.

Is it smart to start buying all our components now?

Newegg just started their Black November (best prices of the year they say).

Shipping already?!

I don't start building until February!

I won't be able to wait until then if I already have my M1!

I lack the patience! :(

But good to here shipping is going smoothly! :D Thanks W360!

Ohhhhh, think it´s time for a "small" Hardware Order :D

The only thing, i need to find out, is what aircooler is the best option for the Maximus impact... would love to see a NH U9B in my case, blowing hot air at the back of the case... but does it fit with the two fans and the HDD Cage on the impact?

Done with recording my video, time to edit it and make myself look a lot less stupid than I actually am.

There are 1000 units of M1 made. ~90% are in the postal office waiting to be shipped / already shipped. 10% is headed to USA as back up against defects.

UPDATE 2013-10-21: Shipping started. Tracking # will start to appear on NCASES.com next wknd.
* Early Shipment List 1 & 2 will be shipped first, but the actual delivery date depends on 1) country, 2) customs, 3) Postal Office screw-ups.
* My goal is to deliver all packages before Jan 2014. I hope early delivery is not an issue ;)

Yeah! It's happening!

So.. tracking at NCASES.com this coming weekend (tomorrow), or the following weekend??

Can't wait!

But I'm one of those lucky 10% !!!
I just don't want to have to NOT be able to assemble my PC inside the Ncase M1 as soon as it arrives. It just needs to happen ASAP.

One question everyone, I'm getting a monitor (1080p) for my M1 build and it has one VGA, one HDMI, and one DVI port.

I plan on having my PS4 using the same monitor too, but PS4 only has a HDMI out, can I use the DVI or VGA port for my M1 to the same effect as HDMI (1080p resolution)?

Brings to question my biggest issue with that. Where does the pump go if your not using a pump/cpu block?

good question... :/ i guess people will start mapping out what they will be able to do once the cases are received. There are a few things i want to try out once i get mine that would be annoying to try figure out without the case.

sure the dvi depending on the monitor you prob wouldnt want to use the hdmi anyway.. :/

VGA will do 1080p sure thing, but most new graphs cards don't include a VGA connector. DVI will do 1080p just as well and you can attach a VGA adapter to those ports. DVI is much more popular nowadays on cards than VGA.

Encoding short video now! I have a longer video showing me bumbling along taking off the side panels. I don't know if people really want to see that, so I'll just save it for later.

Yeah it will be nearly impossible to mount a pump internally I'm thinking. I want to use the Swiftech Apogee II with the ASUS Impact mobo. My only question is will the Trident X 2666mhz ram I want clear the fittings. I may need to get low profile ram not sure.

Excellent job, W360! I bet you are totally exhausted. Thank you so much for all the work you've done making this a reality.

:D

its the M1 we want to see it all!!! :D

It takes a while for me to encode these videos, I'll have the short one up tonight but the long version will probably be later since it's about 20 minutes long instead of 9, and my poor i7 920 is crying about how hard NeatVideo's noise removal filter is workin' it. ;)

Why not just upload to youtube and let them handle the encoding?

Upload raw footage? Bad idea. Not only is that raw footage extremely large (and thus would take a very long time to upload), no real filtering or editing is possible with Youtube's built-in tools. Nah, I'll stick with a mix of Premier for big projects and Vegas for small ones. Almost all filter developers write plugins for both platforms. Raw video would be fine for other projects, perhaps. Your idea isn't without merit. :)

The short video is taking about an hour and a half to encode. The long one would probably take four hours. This is because of the quality settings I'm using in the x264 VFW codec and the quality settings of NeatVideo's noise reduction filter. If I changed some of these settings (which I very likely will for the long video), I may be able to cut times in half. Quality over speed is my priority, however.

Hopefully the Haswell's version of QuickSync isn't garbage and turns out nice results. I'll use it in the future to speed up my encoding times to basically equal the time of the footage, so nine minutes would probably take nine minutes or less to encode. QuickSync is a fast and dirty hardware encoder for h264 that Intel made up without much help from the public. As such it's super fast but somewhat less efficient and lower quality in general than h264 software encoders.

EDIT: Bought the Silverstone PSU off Amazon, should show up on Monday.

Nevermind, I don't actually have an APD2, so shouldn't comment. Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about.

I don't think low profile ram will help really.

I have parts starting to pile up while waiting for my M1 to arrive, so I just pulled out my M6Impact, Viper 3 RAM, and Glacer 240L (same as H220) and the fitting/tubing on the pump would hit the ram regardless of it's height. The CPU socket is just a hair too close to the slots. It might work with some kind of mod/tweak (maybe thinner wall tubing?) or trying to somehow mod the mounting bracket to shift the pump away from the ram slots a hair, but I can't really test either option right now.

And from pictures I've seen of the Apogee Drive 2, the fittings don't look like they come out of the block at a perfect 90 degree angle (more like 75 degrees or something?) so I'd assume there would be even less clearance than with an H220/Glacer 240 unit.

As it is, with the H220/Glacer pump mounted with the fittings facing the top and bottom of the case (just like in the prototype testing and how I plan to mount it) the top fitting is pressing up right against the VRM daughter board, so I doubt an Apogee Drive 2 will fit in either orientation without some kind of modding, if it will fit at all.

Dam that's really disappointing. So everyone planning to water cool a asus impact is pretty much sol. I might just sell my M1 because I was pretty set on having a water cooled Impact.

Edit: Just to confirm your talking about a Asus Impact Motherboard correct?

The Asus Maximus Impact has the same CPU position and daughterboard height as the Asus P8Z77-I and the Apogee Drive II fits fine on this.

I'm going to try for a custom loop with the bitspower block and try to find a place to fit and mount a small pump like a laing ddc
probly have to go with thick single 120mm rad just for the cpu and go for like a titan style cooler on the gpu.. Well see what the possibilities are
when everyone gets their cases and starts playing around i guess (maybe gotta do some modding) I'd never sell my M1 anyway.
I don't plan to buy anything until i get the case anyway (hoping or a price drop on Titan since the 780 got a pretty nice price drop in the uk)

I thought that seemed weird that no one has said anything regarding it not fitting before.
Again WiSK comes through to save the day! I was devastated by that last post LOL

Edit: I totally forgot you had that same setup. Yes! My plan will work!

Yeah I was about to order the ASRock mobo instead. Wish The_Cheese had the ASUS board and H220 to test fit with. I'm sure someone else somewhere else is running an H220 and Impact together in a different case, anyone got high enough Google-fu powerlevels to find pictures?

Or am I confused about what we're even discussing? :X

I've also fitted an AD2 to a H61 board (i.e. CPU in 'proper' position) and you can do this with low profile memory as long as the outlet port on the AD2 is next to / above the memory.

Yeah I said I was going to run the Impact with the Apogee II. Then that guy above said there wasn't clearance. Then WiSK chimed in with his setup being nearly identical and said it was fine and has plenty of clearance. Forgive my jimmy rustling everyone :)

If anyone is still confused about the last posts about ram clearance (I know I am,) I can confirm that the H220 CPU block fits fine together with my low profile corsair ram on the ASUS Impact

Don't forget to add lens flare! :D

Newegg just started their Black November (best prices of the year they say).

Their Black November sale prices suck, so far. Just went through the whole list, and many items are priced the exact same as their usual pricing, and many are actually worse than their normal weekday sales.

I'd run DVI to DVI from your M1 to monitor and HDMI to HDMI from your PS4 to your monitor. If need be, just use a DVI to HDMI cable, rather than VGA.

Well there we have it. H220 and AD2 and presumably also the CM Glacer 240L will all be cool with Asus Maximus Impact.

What I'm wondering is how to fit an Aquaero 6 in my M1

What about the Gigabyte z77x-wifi? Will the AD2 fit on that??? I've already got my board, FQ res on the way- really hoping the AD2 will fit.... can it be rotated 90 degrees on the cpu like some air coolers?

You mean the Z77N-wifi? Then yes, as I said the outlet port will clear low profile memory. That means the inlet port is towards the back of the case. Will need a 90 degree rotary fitting to reach the reservoir (if you are going with the FrozenQ one).

I don't think they're quite the same, actually. Take a look at this pic (click for bigger):

The socket on the Impact seems to be shifted slightly closer to the VRM board. Also, the heatspreader/cover seems thicker on the daughterboard compared to the P8Z77-I and Z87-I.

Do you have the port next to the RAM then? Can you check to verify, one way or another, whether it works with the port next to the VRM board?

In that case, then you can turn the AD2 and have the outlet above the memory. Less desirable for priming/bleeding but still workable, no?

Edit: I just took the cover off my rig and -- yes going just by sight and your pictures (YMMV) -- even if the CPU is closer and the heatspreader is higher then the outlet port should still clear it.

Edit2: My reservoir is running low. Slow leak somewhere :)

I'm a bit confused; what would regular height RAM heatspreaders be in the way of when using an H220 on the Impact?

Confusion is because we're talking about the AD2, with regards memory clearance. Because it has ports that angle at 75 degrees (while H220 ports go straight up).

Yeah, my bad- the z77n-wifi.... Looks like I'll need to get RAM too though. I have 16 gigs of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 1600 I had planned to use but I think the heat spreaders are too big for the AD2. Any recommendations on a good set of low profile ram- I don't need to OC the hell out of it? I just want a reliable, of course paired set at least PC3 12800 (which I believe is the max for my MB anyway).
