The Real Differences Between PS4 and Xbox One Performance

bottom line is that the PS4 has a significant advantage if publishers take advantage outside of first party development.

With the polls/numbers still, even after MS's changes to their Xbox One policies still showing massive edge to consumers support of the PS4 as the frontrunner, there is more and more chance we will start seeing 3rd party devs taking advantaged of the PS4 as the main dev platform. Of course, who knows ultimately. Both on pre-order in my house day one.

No one has shown this statement to be true FWIW.

All public developer comments that we do have suggest strongly it is false.

OK...explain to me how a GPU with 384 more shaders, twice the number of ROP's, and GDDR5 RAM won't be a good bit more powerful? I mean, the amount of shaders that the PS4 has over the Xbox One is HALF the total number of shaders in the Xbox One!

Either way, go on with believing what you want. I really don't much care any way as I don't really want a console, but come on man! You're defending something that doesn't really deserve it and really has nothing to defend. The Xbox One is slower no matter how you try to spin it and it's more expensive...so what's so special about it?

You left off the 10MB eDRAM. What the heck is with people and ignoring large fast caches that are outside of the CPU, GPU, and main memory?! Do you think they're worthless or something?

Pfff, 10MB of eDRAM, just add moar cores. :p :D

Yeah, those caches are critical to performance, don't forget those, guys!
They actually may make a big difference with these new systems.

Yeah they make a difference but him pointing that out was kind of pointless as all he did was further prove me point while attempting to make me look dumb all at the same time...for some reason?

I never said it wouldn't be more powerful. I have said several times now that I expect the difference to be too small to notice outside of some 1st party games and maybe not even then. Note also that none of the developers who've commented publicly have said the xb1 will be more powerful than the PS4 nor have I suggested they did.

The Xbox One is slower no matter how you try to spin it and it's more expensive...so what's so special about it?
Yes its more expensive but you're not getting nothing for the extra cost irregardless if Kinect2 does or doesn't suck. Will it be somewhat slower than the PS4? Yes. Is it a bad console? I see no reason to say that...but I do see a whole lot of other people saying it, such as yourself, without giving good reasons for doing so.

This is after all a tech site, and I like to talk about tech, and why shouldn't I involve myself in a public topic about tech? Do you only like to be agreed with?

Yeah they make a difference but him pointing that out was kind of pointless as all he did was further prove me point while attempting to make me look dumb all at the same time...for some reason?
Maybe I was a bit too smarmy in my previous reply but it did show that your comment is incorrect which was the whole point.

Memory architecture and bandwidth are incredibly important. You can have all the CPU/GPU performance in the world but if the hardware can't get the data it needs when it needs it then you won't realize that performance.

More "good" news for the Xbone:

Microsoft: “System processing” takes up 10 percent of Xbox One GPU time
Game developers will be able to use that GPU time in the future, though.

That's a pretty good possibility for the rest of the 50% GPU deficit multiplatform developers have leaked. Why not just turn off one of the CUs and claim it's still as fast with 6 as another with 18.

There is no basis for comparison on this because Sony hasnt released a like number. The CU think has been such a tired old argument that isnt even relevant anymore. In fact the latest info ive seen indicates that only 14 of the 18 CUs are even used for gaming, which makes the already somewhat small difference even smaller

So i've read. :p

His source of information is from vgleaks, based on its earlier leak a year+ earlier with other "accurate" information like the PS4 having 4GB memory memory. Anyways, reading through that post on vgleaks, it claims that 4CU can be reserved for GPGPU, or used for rendering.

I'd say someone is not in the know, if you know what I'm saying. ;)

“Well I think there’s a couple of things I would say, one is that every platform I’ve ever been involved in somebody has said ‘oh, this has got more gigaflops or more teraflops than the other one,’ and at the end of the day it never really matters,” he told us. “It’s all about having the best games and having the most impressive experiences, and clearly Xbox One has the best games. So that would be my first response.”

“The other is that any time that you ask a developer – including, by the way, our own internal studios – in the run up to launch of a console you’re going to get a slightly nuanced answer because the operating system’s not finished, the performance of the machine’s not locked, and as you may be aware we can increase CPU and GPU capability on Xbox One,” continued Harrison. “So I think it’s impossible to draw any conclusions from that based on pre-launch unfinished hardware and unfinished operating systems."

Translation = Yes developers even our internal ones are not happy with what were providing.

I think you guys are missing the point. The Super Nintendo is the greatest.

Damn straight.
So here's some delicious cake to celebrate!

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...unlock-more-gpu-power-for-xbox-one-developers

Ignoring the false title of that article, what they say is that indeed, 10% of the Xb1 gpu is set aside for the Snap+Kinnect features, that means that the current GPU power difference is of 1.179 TFLOPS GPU vs 1.84TFLOPS GPU.

In other words on paper, the PS4 is 56% stronger GPU wise...

"Ouch, right in the BALANCE!"

Well there at the end they mention that the PS4 has also set aside a small percentage, just not anywhere near as much. It doesn't really matter how you look at it and what Microsoft does, they can't make up the difference. I really want to see the final speed of the CPU/GPU in the PS4.

Well the thing is that PS4 doesn't have to set aside such a big % because it doesn't have to deal with 3 OSs + Snap + Kinect, if you search around you will know that the PS4 saves up 1% or less of it's much more extensive power.

That's true when the system architectures are very different, like the PS3 vs XB360, especially when it's harder to extract performance from one platform or another. Performance for different rendering strategies can be all over the place, especially if one platform gets more optimization than the other.

But he's got to be kidding to trot that out when both consoles are quite similar in execution resources. Both use a pair of Jaguar-based quad core CPUs, and similar GPU architectures. The differences are significant: GDDR5 vs DDR3 + 32MB eSRAM (which helps with GPGPU), 1152 vs 768 shader cores, 32 (8 RB) vs 16 (4 RB) ROP and 72 TMU vs 48 TMU. MS's problem is that this time the architectures are mostly directly comparable.

The defenders who are buying into MS's nonsense are just deluding themselves. Yes, Xbone should have great looking games, and if PS4 multiplatform versions are gimped, the Xbone may look just as good. But there's easily a generation difference in performance between the two and things aren't in general aren't going to be very favorable for the Xbone.

And Sony Fanboys are ignorant in thinking that the XBox one will fail just due to a minor performance difference. If you *REALLY* cared about FPS you wouldnt be buying a PS4 in the first place. Sorry but your 1080p 30 hz on killzone SP is nothing compared to 144hz native support at 1080p. Period. Sony Fanboys are full of it, there is absolutely no way that console sales are not nearly identical this generation just like they were last generation. In fact, i would expect 80% of the people who own one to buy the other, just as i would expect better off financial people will own PC Ps4 and XBox one. Why is there so much freaking hate in this industry amongst its users?

I prefer Halo to Killzone, why the hell does that make my opinion "stupid" or inferior? I would say Uncharted and TLOU are two of the most overrated games every made. Exclusives are exclusives, if you want to play that exclusive console buy the freaking console, dont bitch at everyone whos opinion differs

That is an honest answer, and one that i personally respect to be honest.

Have fun Vlad!

Oh Cmon, he starting talking smack to Sony people then brought up a PC lol. Let's ignore pxc's post and just say PS4 sucks because people can get 600 dollar videocards and be done with it as opposed to challenge (and lose) the hardware argument with an Xbox One comparison.

No i simply called out bullshit when i saw bullshit. The OP that i quoted was simply bashing "Xbots" when the other side does the exact same bullshit that he is complaining about. I simply pointed that fact out

Please, like i said, i called bullshit when i saw bullshit which is the exact same thing i have ever done on any of these threads. Show me where i posted anything saying the PS4 is an inferior console, or said that people who buy PS4s are idiots. In fact in a previous post somewhere i stated my discontent with The Last of Us, but i also said that i dont take my opinion of it to mean that every single other person should share the same opinion. Not once have I said anyone is stupid for making a decision on which console they want to buy but i do however call out bullshit on numbers like presale figures when A) they are completely dependent on the company and how many they allow retailers to place, and B) they mean jack shit for the life of a console. The 3DS had just as slow of a start as the Vita did, and now it is the most dominant mobile gaming device of its kind on the market.

Your pre-order argument never made it off the driveway dude. You just throw random other thoughts all over the place and then come to some conclusion that you're right.

Your pre-order argument never made it off the driveway dude. You just throw random other thoughts all over the place and then come to some conclusion that you're right.

The fact that you cant comprehend that the numbers of pre orders is dependent on the companies releasing the products is pretty pathetic and implies you most likely didnt even pass high school math much less any marketing.

Heres your understanding:
Company A allows 500 pre orders and sells 500
Company B allows 1000 pre orders and sells 1000

Therefor company b has higher demand ignoring the fact that both companies sold 100% of their allowed pre orders.

Why is there so much freaking hate in this industry amongst its users?

You obviously didn't grow up in the 16-bit era.
The SNES vs. Sega Genesis: now that was real competition.

Unlike these pansy consoles now, those game systems actually kicked ass.

I have great memories of both but I would hate to go back to cartridges....

^ Just to add to that, it will most certainly be the games that end up making the winner, not the hardware.
In terms of hardware processing power overall, the PS4 wins hands down.

That does not mean it will be victory for Sony though.
If Microsoft plays its cards right, it could certainly spell victory.

Nintendo's problem at this point really isn't the hardware, it's the lack of games.
Nintendo always had a 1UP back in the day due to the incredible game library associated with each console.

Unfortunately, they stopped playing by their own rules, started believing their own PR statements, and are now a complete joke compared to the existing competition, let alone the future competition.
Hardware isn't going to save them, it will be the games, as this is what the market of these devices is.

I have great memories of both but I would hate to go back to cartridges....

That's something this pure-digital generation is lacking.
I would love to have a physical copy of my games, especially a cartridge.

I understand, they are no longer necessary with today's technology, but there was just something about that era in gaming and the technology that made it very memorable.

Oh, and box art win.

contra-iii.png

Box art is a lost concept, but those cartridges were holding the games back with that terrible copper connect and extremely low memory. I'm not saying go pure digital, but disks are much better, I don't care if you have a five second load time!

I am basing it off Market Analysts, pre-order sales, company statements (both Sony/Microsoft and retailers), polling data, console availability estimates, among other things.

Going back to the debate, you seem to always bring up one fact does not correlate to one or the other. You state that Sony is allowing a grossly overestimated amount of pre-orders and go on to say Microsoft has a hardcap.

That's a hilariously failed argument.

PS4 a "bit tight" prior to Christmas

TrustedReviews said:
“We’re right in the fine detail of volume planning right now. What I will say is that over the launch window of the first two to three months there’s going to be ample stock and we’ll catch up,” explained Gara. “Pre-Christmas is huge and anyone that has pre-ordered a PS4 now is almost certain to get it before Christmas, and there will be more on top of that – barring any problems with ships sinking or whatever else that could go wrong that’s out of our control.[/url]

-

“Our advice to gamers is that if you want one, that’s fantastic, we’re delighted, but get your name on the preorder list of partner retailers because that puts you first in line for any delays and any follow up volume. So it’ll be a bit tight prior to Christmas but there will be ample PS4 in those first few weeks.”

It seems there is a possibility of the average gamer walking into a retailer on or after the PS4 release date actually picking up Sony’s next-generation console, but we imagine there will be queues miles long on the eve of November 29 full of expectant gamers.

Both consoles are sold out of Launch Day pre-orders, yet both Microsoft and Sony are allowing pre-orders to continue on through the rest of the year for some retailers.

You seem to be under the assumption that Sony will only sell a portion of their preorders when the exact same thing applies to Microsoft. Meaning that if all things are being equal (excluding obvious hardware superiority, entry price, etc.) based on pre-orders alone;

Xbox One: Under 1 Million
PS4: Over 1 Million

If both only managed to sell 50% that still puts the PS4 ahead, it's all going back to the same thing even with the hardware debate. Microsoft is also facing a much larger chance at shortages than Sony is thanks to complicated architecture. No matter how you look at it you simply cannot seriously suggest that the demand is the same, the sales will be the same or that the hardware has parity with each other.

How can anyone see:

Xbone: 1.18 TF GPU (12 CUs) for games
Xbone: 768 Shaders
Xbone: 48 Texture units
Xbone: 16 ROPS
Xbone: 2 ACE/ 16 queues

PS4: 1.84TF GPU (14 + 4 Advanced CUs) for games + 56%
PS4: 1152 Shaders +50%
PS4: 72 Texture units +50%
PS4: 32 ROPS + 100%
PS4: 8 ACE/64 queues +400%

And seriously suggest there is not a stark difference there? I didn't even mention bandwidth there, if I did it negatively affects the One since that hardware couldn't even take full advantage of their optimal bandwidth assuming a perfect scenario.

did you fail to understand?

Microsoft has not publicly released a statement but when head Sony officials say "over a million" and retailers are quoted saying "significantly more demand" it's not overly difficult to come to a simple conclusion. You're the exact same type of individual that probably believes Nintendo will meet their ridiculous sales estimates at 8 million for the fiscal year ending in March, when everything points to that not even being remotely close. Sony's estimates are completely justifiable given most statistics and I mentioned as such when debating ballistic in the Console threads.

You didn't coherently respond to anything in my post other than "Microsoft has not released numbers" when outright proven to be wrong on a multitude of issues you have continuously brought up time and time again.

Anyone who calls the difference between the xbox one and ps4 minor is disengenious. the PS4 espicially because they are closed systems has signficient advantages on the xbone, that would normally put the PS4 a generation ahead of the xbox one.

the question is whether it is going to show. I think it will depend on sales. if both systems sell roughy equal then you wont really see a difference, but if the PS4 pulls away, then i could see teams spending the time to put the etrxa polish on PS4 titles.

Your trying to say that the PS4 demand is higher and using pre order numbers as support for that statement which is inherently flawed considering the fact that we dont know the real number for either console. Which again, makes your argument a complete and total failure.

Polls themselves are inherently not indicative of an entire populace, period. Lets look at the recent poll of roughly ~1300 people. Of those 1300 26% said they wanted a PS4 and 15% for the XB1.

Now do the math, if there are in fact 1,000,000 pre orders for the PS4 then these poll results only account for less than .03% of the number of pre orders, which makes it significantly too small of a number to draw any form of conclusion or find any type of trend.

Polls themselves, are inherently flawed because they are EASILY skewed, which is why real market analysts do not use them, only idiotic little journalism sites do.

You havent proven a single thing that i have said wrong, period. end of story. You've done nothing but spout marketing BULLSHIT as fact. The sheer fact that your quoting theoretical values on the PS4 and non-theoretical numbers on the XB1 performance proves your utter ignorance. Not a single dev has shown us an actual sustainable 170+ gb/s throughput, because more than likely it isnt achievable, it is a theoretical number and only that
