NVidia SHIELD

So it's an oversized, overpriced smartphone that won't fit in your pocket or be used as a phone?

PS Vita has more appeal to me, it may be in the gutter now, but its future is as clear as this device for me

I don't understand the need for portable gaming at all.

For children, maybe, but not for us.

I mean, the best you can hope from something like this is some shitty platform-type game, not a real, good game.

Last time I gamed on the go was on my old monochrome Game Boy.

For a while portable gaming was the only kind of gaming I could manage with a new born. Even now as my little on starts to steal my PC I spend quite a bit of time on the 3DS.

Ahh, Well I guess - for me - te type of gaming that these portable units allow for (as well as consoles) just doesn't appeal to me.

If I didn't have a PC I would never play any games at all.

I understand that. The other perk is that when I do get back to my PC, the screen looks really, really huge. :)

haha!

To me that's like a "I bash my head against the wall cause it feels so good when I stop" kind of things, but yea, I'd imagine. :p

I remember when I got my first "large" monitor - a 22" Iiyama (Mitsubishi Diamondtron CRT) - after years and years of 12 - 15" VGA monitors.

it felt strange and almost unusably large at first. Funny how things change :p

I like what one of the developers said..."it's the first portable gaming console of it's kind". Uhhh no man. Either way i think it'll fail just like so many others did. It's being marketed towards hardcore pc gamers who are older. I myself am 29 and couldn't see myself being seen with this thing (It's too big) more less having time to play it. I think i can wait until i get home to play. Why did most of Nintendo's portable consoles do so well? Duh...they were marketing towards the right crowd. This thing, although cool, should've never been invented. They could've put that R&D money into faster video cards for cheaper prices :p. I'll stick to simple android games while i'm at bored at work.

I'm liking what I'm reading, good or bad (even if it's mostly bad)
I do understand that it might seem like a waste of money and a waste on NVidia's part for R&D.
NVidia isn't going to be in any next gen. console (could be a bad/good choice)
Maybe this is their way of getting their tech out to consumers on the (portable) console platform.
It might sound stupid of me to say that though.
IF there is enough advertising and a large enough demand, this thing COULD take off.
All of that does seem very UNLIKELY though, like you've all mentioned.
Personally, I'll get it if/when it flops and the prices crash.
Maybe install a Linux Distro or something on it if it's possible.

Their targeting an incredibly small niche with this product. I know they said they weren't expecting to get prodigious sales numbers or anything, but I'm curious as to how many units they expect to sell. I've one, maybe two people who said they'd buy this after browsing through multiple forums and article comments.

Personally, it's just too expensive for what it seems to be. Component and functionality wise? I think $350 is certainly a fair price, but people naturally compare this to the 3DS, PSV, and tablets like the Nexus 7. Here, $350 seems a bit ridiculous.

When they are officially released I'll see what all they offer. I wouldn't mind to get one, but maybe not at $350. If I can access and play my steam library from outside of my home network, I'd enjoy it for that reason alone (i get really bored visiting in-laws, this would remedy that a bit). I think everyone knows a handheld gaming systems will never replace an actual PC. But I can't pack my tower with me everywhere, so this may be a good medium.

it'd be cooler if some how people jus made one platform better then like new platforms that are limited by the exact same thing other platforms are limited by.

I just came back to look through this old thread and then I find this.
I'm sorry.. but what?

Portables may not be for you, but saying you can only play platformer games on them is absurd. You can have all different types of games from turn based strategy to sport. FPS is not the only genre.

As for the SHIELD, I just don't see it. I know the hardware isn't super cheap for them, but the price just seems way too high to me.

if the price was 200 bucks it might be successful in terms of sales... but it's a no go at that price point.

It's the PC streaming that they are hoping for.... Lol they do not understand people who play PC either like a keyboard and mouse or the actual joystick platform for that game (I.e. steering wheel or flight controls). I am pretty sure they will sell a good amount of these though, but I would not buy this let alone the 1st generation of it.

At the $300 price point its at now, I might get one. I don't mind controllers and I would like to be able to play full PC games in bed and in the bathroom.

A lot cheaper then getting the razor tablet and joystick.

it is tempting. I do think I'd game more if I could while laying down.

just get a note 3 when it comes out and use a gamepad with it. problem solved. everyone's got cell phones anyway. why not take advantage?

How is one to hold a tablet and controller at the same time, especially laying down? Lol

And since when can a phone play your PC games?

I had this thing on pre-order, but after the delay announcement last month, I realized my excitement might have been more about it being a new cool toy than an actual need and want for a $300 gaming device. So I ended up canceling my pre-order.

I might give that Splashtop app a try on my Nexus 4 with a Moga bluetooth controller. From the video I saw, the lag looked pretty bad, so I suspect that may not really do it for me. But I guess better to gamble $10 on that than $300 on this.

What I'd really like is to be able to stream games from my high end PC to my low end laptop. Any apps that do that?

You could also get a GameKlip to hold the PS3 controller and phone. I used Splashtop while doing so and it works really well.

Well I bought one so I'll report back my general experience with it. At first I was like "Fuck no" but honestly I can see for my own personal circumstances , that I could actually get some use out of this.

Plus taking a shit just got even more entertaining! :)

Anyways once I get it and have a few days to mess with it , I'll report back.

Me neither. Handheld games have not been for me for a while. My attention span on android games is super low also. PC for me
