So, I was the lucky early bird in this thread and the board arrived today.

Envy on the reader's part is understandable. Let me say that it is a bit of an embarrassment of riches. I appreciate that and feel compelled to get it up and running for the team as soon as possible. This is my first ever multiprocessor project so hopefully folks will lend me their advise.

The board is a Supermicro X7DWN+ (manual PDF) with L5410 CPUs

First thing I need is a PSU that supports the full 12 pin EPS CPU power pinout, 550W minimum. If anyone has one for a reasonable price please let me know. Also any heads up on decent deals on a suitable new PSU are very welcome.

Another question regards the heatsink mounting. These LGA 771 sinks are attached through the board with 4 machine screws, captive and spring loaded in the sinks. They look like 6-32 and it looks like they are intended to screw into case standoffs Though light backing plates are present, they have no female threads. I plan to run the system naked for now, though I will probably manufacture at least a tray in the future. Does anyone see any problem with just putting nuts under the backing plates and attaching the sinks that way for naked folding?

1st; you sumbitch i hate you, i think i was next in line

2nd: i have a 771 2p board and i just got some nuts from the hardware store and run naked with 2x 2u heatsinks with 8 nuts, so you'll be fine, just remember to do the first couple loose and do the X pattern when screwing them in. i just held the nuts in place with my fingers.

3rd: you suck

edit: 4th: i have e5345's in my board which are quad core 2.33ghz cpus that run 80w and i get temps in the low 40s with the 2u copper heatsinks and a single 120mm fan on both heatsinks, running naked of course. so you should expect lower temps.

Thanks Ted! I will go dig up some nuts.

What kind of PPD are you getting with yours?

if sound doesnt matter, I have a brand new PSU I kept as spares for my Supermicro boards, also X7 models (X7DA8, X7DAE)
Its for a 2U rack mount tho and the fans on the loud side, but if you want to pay shipping, its yours (probably a flat rate box would work)

PPD is around 13k, with some WUs going as high as 22k, but that's rare

perfect!

I'm getting about 23k these days with my L5420s (it was 27k not all that long ago! dammit!). That's BSEL modded to 3GHz (1333 FSB to 1600 FSB) though.

I'd highly recommend doing the mod since your board will handle a 1600Mhz FSB and has the memory dividers so that you can still run the memory at 667MHz. You'd get 2.8GHz with your L5410's and all it takes is maybe five minutes and a tiny bit of electrical tape. =)

You just need to cover BSEL1 to get from 1333->1600:

There are some pictures of the 1066->1333 mod here:

They're covering BSEL2 in this picture -- you can either cut a double wide strip and cover that pad and the one above it (BSEL1), or just move the little strip up one pad to just cover BSEL1, since BSEL2 is already `not connected' internally in the L5410.

yeah, i would totally bsel, but my chipset doesn't support 1600fsb :(

put something nonconductive between the nut and board otherwise your fine, l did that a year or two ago

The 771 socket retention things are already in between, so its good to go.

in that case your good to go, my 775 board I did it on did not

alright guys, thanks so far

dbwillis is getting his shrieker PSU out to me today, I think I have a laptop SATA drive around here I can use as a boot drive. I also recently bought a spare win7 key from a member (32 bit but I have 64 bit media and the rumble is that the keys activate no problem), but I'm guessing I should run linux on this think for max PPD no?

i have the windows on my 2p, i also tried a VM of ubuntu on it (so not native) and the PPD were identical.

however, i would recommend ubuntu/linux if it is dedicated folding, you can use that Win7 key elsewhere.

That is a very nice supply, but I'm not doing any business with newegg after their recent behavior toward the site.

Got the tape trick done on BSEL1, nice to have a widefield microscope in the house I tell ya', and the sinks mounted up.

Soon as the PSU gets here I will be ready for testing

this needs an update, is it going yet? did the BSEL work?

Sorry, The PSU showed up (thanks dbwillis!!), but I have had a lot going on the last few days and it just sits there on the bench. I'll try to get it POSTed this weekend.

well hmmmm

finally got around to messing with this today

no POST, no beep, I do get power at the fan headers but oddly no power LED

going to try undoing the BESL mod and try again...fingers crossed

do the fans spin constant or do they just twitch?

Did you put the ram in? if so see if its in the right place and if the sticks work.
Also sure the PSU is connected correctly?

Most things like this turn out to be something really simple.

paperclipped the PSU, all the rails read good

pulled the tape off the BSEL pads

no post no beep, fans spin up constant

sigh

do you have all the ram installed? try one cpu and one stick of ram, see what happens

takes 2 sticks of ram per the manual, 1A and 1B

tried different sets there with each proc in CPU1 and with both...nothing

odd thing, the board has an onboard power LED, it does not light

I am thinking this is something simple and stupid I am missing

well i should get my setup from brilong tomorrow, so i'll be able to help troubleshoot a little more once i have the exact same setup :D

does the PSU power on another machine?

good question, I don't have anything comparable here to really test but I can try some BS system on it

hey jojo69, got my setup from brilong today and got some time to work on it just now. thing booted up without a hitch at default settings, 32gb fbdimm recognized and cpu speed showed 2.33 ghz. so what did i do next you ask? i'll tell you! i tried that bsel mod, my hands are way too big and i don't have an exacto knice, so i used a regular gerber multi tool knife to cut some electric tape. covered bsel 1 and 2 since there's no way i'm getting just one pad (and the guide linked earlier said bsel 1 wasn't used by 1333 procs anyway)

long story short, here's the spoils: http://i.imgur.com/L6pm0tm.jpg

was using a 450w, so it won't be up and running fully until i get a more proper PSU.

gotta give credit to brilong giving these away for shipping costs!

oh, i forgot to mention that i didn't have any LEDs on when i only had the power plugged in, there was a bright green LED when i powered on though. just wanted to add that in there

yeah, over near the FP header

doesn't light for me, I am hoping one of the supply rails is dropping out under load

well, the PSU brings a lesser system into BIOS no problem, and that about exhausts my troubleshooting options here

looking like I am hosed, bake it??

Pull the cpu and clean the contact points and then check the socket for bent pins.

yeah, both sockets look good, I have a widefield microscope here

Well I guess you need to strip it, takes all the components out, clean then, check then over.

Then test the ones you can like PSU and RAM, you have already tested the PSU so try the ram in another system.

Once you have all the components separated eave it a day and then try to re-build it, always wait a day to let your brain rest, you will see problems clearer and won't make as many mistakes as if you try to strip and rebuild in a day.

Once you have re assembled it if it then doesn't work it may be time to consider faulty components.

hard to find another system that takes FB-DIMMS (coincidentally i have 2 now, NOT the norm though) but he should have enough to choose from, 16 sticks can't all go bad at once, can they?

speaking of the ram, it gets HOT, so i only have 2 sticks running right now, one in 1A and one in 2A. plus i read somewhere that FBDimms will eat up 10-15w for EACH STICK

the waiting thing is a good tactic though, don't get frustrated with it, just come back to it later.

well, I figured it out, pretty sure

upon close inspection there are a number of SMD components missing near the sockets, looks like the unsecured heat sinks rattled around and broke them off in shipping.

unless bigted has smart tweezers it is going to be pretty difficult to determine the component values needed...

at least I know it wasn't just me being dumb

Did brilong insure the package? I know he did mine, maybe he could do a claim with USPS

also, do not have smart tweezers... actually had to google them to see what they were
