Figured I'd save everyone the trouble and burn through it myself. about 2/4 -3/4 of the way through I got both graphical mods installed.
Before I go any further I should note that I'm the guy around here that will defend any game if I feel like the developers tried or did something creative and worthwhile.
This game is what you've heard it was. It's just plain old garbage. It isn't just that the graphics and gameplay are old(we'd discussed in another thread I believe this was developed on the framework for FEAR EP which was made by the same developer.) The Story is just plain atrocious. There are short, very short segments where this game starts to be fun, but then just drones on into boredom. You even start backtracking near the end.
Having finished it I find it clear that this game was cobbled together likely in a 6 month period. Both the story and the way the chapters flow don't add up. Like bad fan fiction. This isn't like Homefront which I kinda enjoyed or FarCrap 2 or Bioshit 2 both of which were "Complete" games. If you play this game you are basically playing an unfinished MOD. I wouldn't even call it a game. There are "Almost" 3 bosses that in any other game would be called mini-bosses or quicktime events. The game just ends. No explanation, no climax or epilogue. It's just 10 or so short chapters of crap lifted from Aliens.
It's worth minor note yes the mods improve the lighting and smooth things out a bit but that's it. It removes the unbareble high contrast washout you've seen in some gameplay videos. The game still looks on par with FEAR which I immediately thought of when I first started playing. Due to the fact that this was cobbled together the AI just works well in some chapters and others it's broken.
Sorry I'm rambling, just trying to put together thoughts. The main thing is whatever Gearbox "Fixes", if anything at all, avoid anything but a complete remake of the entire game. Because it's not finished. You'd be buying/playing chunks of a game.
As for the Story also garbage. If these idiots would learn to fucking read up on the source material Alien 3 isn't even canon in the James Cameron/Ridley Scott universe and neither is Resurrection. I'm not commenting on their quality. It is what it is. Neither is actually canon. They've mentioned it a couple times in interviews etc. They were films made by FOX and no Aliens fan would hold you to them.(except here lol. Good movies I just mean we would have gotten over it if this ignored those.) The big cameo for this film is Hicks. Don't worry he's in the opening intro I ain't spoiling anything. They dance around this stupid issue of him being dead when they don't even have to. Hell even the comicbooks don't consider Alien 3 canon. It doesn't matter because the game ends before they bother have any story with hicks. He just kinda pops in for tea and the game ends about a chapter later.
So there you have it.
TL;DR
Game - looks and plays like a half-assed unfinished expansion pack from FEAR.
Story - Just a couple nonsense cutscenes explaining nothing, adding nothing and going nowhere.
This game doesn't get a score from me because it's not complete Incomplete/10
If you're even curious about the multiplayer don't be. It's meh. People who say they're "having a blast" are trapped in Stockholme syndrome . Slap them and make them play anything else for 5 minutes. I don't care if it's TF2 or COD or BF1942 mods. It's just boring and you'd realize you're only playing it because you paid for it. I give it a month before the servers are dead.
I would really suggest playing AVP2 or AVP 2000. Believe it or not people still play those and they are tons of fun. I wish I could say the same for AVP2010 but it's stuck in matchmaking hell so it's impossible for people to "get together" and play it.
