Okay, well a vertical layout wouldn't be my first choice, but here's what I came up with after a few hours messing around.
It's a bit bigger than the OP was going for, but compares pretty well to the FT03-mini, considering the extra capability.

The cutouts front and back are for easy carrying.
Not my usual style, but when you're working exclusively with aluminum you have to do things a bit different.
Opinions/thoughts?
- Dimensions: 160 * 290 * 400mm, 19l (FT03-mini is 189 * 235 * 397, 17.6l)
- 6 x 2.5" drives
- Room for a dual 120mm/140mm slim rad in front
- Two PSU mounting locations (lower and upper); lower is primarily for SFX, but very short ATX PSUs (e.g., Nexus NX-6000) will fit. Upper should take 160mm long PSUs
- Full length dual slot GPU (320mm+)
- No optical drive, 5.25" or 3.5" bays
