Diablo III is getting killed on Metacritic

the beta is not a good way to base an opinion off of. Not only is it a much older build then retail but its the least entertaining part of the game. they opened up the beta to stress test the servers not for you to get a taste, and you got that particular section of the game because its the only part of the game without spoilers.

Well then what else are we supposed to judge it on? I'm not going to waste $60 if I don't know if I'm going to like a game or not.

Actually you're right I guess. I shouldve have looked at it from your shoes cause when I played the beta I was like yeah this is cool Im gonna buy it.. but man the improvements from the beta are vast just saying.

Yeah. I feel the same way about D3 as I do MP3. I'm sure they're both great games with well done gameplay but neither are going to give me what I'm looking for from either franchise.

Yeah Max Payne thats a rental for me.

Does it end with your character being handed an ending by a glowing translucent star child? That'd be a great reason to give it a bad review.

That wasn't a case of anyone being paid off it was a case of the management of Gamespot at the time not understanding the way things work and refusing to stand up for their employees. No one was paid off to do anything.

You're right: there was never any concrete proof Gamespot brass forced Jeff out specifically because of an advertiser's complaints about his low review. However, there was more than enough substantiated hearsay and circumstantial evidence for you to easily put 2+2 together. If not being directly paid off for better reviews, they were almost without a doubt undually influenced by Eidos. Basically, it was the "O.J. paradigm": you couldn't prove murder in a trial by jury, but you could easily win the civil case. To anyone familiar with the publishing industry and ad-selling space, this was no surprise -- it was just the fist time a major publisher got somewhat caught in the act.

The sliding of the average review toward 10/perfect over the past 5-6 years is no coincidence or benign trend. Publishers have a several strong motivators to hand out high reviews: namely, advertising revenue and keeping the early review copies coming. To equate this to the hardware review space, Kyle can probably chime in here with some good background (and has, I believe, although I can't dig up the articles/spots presently)

Can you, if you so please, give us (or just me) a list of the improvements over the beta? As it's a Diablo game, I'm still thinking about it... but from the decisions I've heard and the Beta I can't even come close to justify a buy.

I don't know what "improvements" you're looking for but I am having a blast. Played some co-op with my buddy, both of us barbarians, and just smashed shit up. Lots of fun and we are looking to get our third friend going as well.

I understand the reasons behind DRM but I'm getting choppy frame rates because Blizzard decided that pulling assets and AI off servers in SP was a good idea. Lag in single player people!!! IMO that's just ridiculous.

I think its EXTREMELY important to consider how many games are actually released in the past 5-6 years compared to the ps2/ps1/snes/nes eras. There are far fewer games of far higher quality due to the immense cost of development. You get more quality games but far less games overall.

how do you think duping came about

In Diablo 1 by starting an IPX or TCP/IP game. And even though you were the only 1 in the game it still added latency to the game play. Trying to dupe while in a purely single player game was much much harder because there was no latency when you picked up something.

Or was I not supposed to bring that up?

Meh, bunch of kids crying because of server issues. While they shouldn't get a free pass, the game itself has been a hell of a lot of fun.

Can someone explain this mentality to me please... I have read it so much on the D3 forums and its just sickening how people defend blizzard and bash people that are unhappy...

what i said on D3 forums said:
I just cant understand this attitude. In no other industry is it acceptable to sell an unfinished product. Yet for whatever reason in the last 10 years its become the norm in gaming and the sheep bash anyone unhappy about it.

Blizzard is the largest company in PC gaming and they run the largest online game in the world. Having server issues on the launch day of D3 is unfathomable and im still finding it hard to believe. Nobody has more experience with this crap and you would think its their first damn game.

On top of it all the whole flipping issue is the crap DRM they forced on us thats screwing us out of being able to just play. Worthless DRM that didnt even stop the pirates for a single day and now hundreds of thousands if not millions of paying customers are getting the shaft while the pirates are all playing...

So no this is not even remotely acceptable. Theres no excuse for why the servers cant handle the load. Theres no excuse for crapping all over paying customers with crap DRM. Theres simply no excuse...

But keep defending them as though they are a person and not a multi billion dollar corporation thats sole purpose is to drive profits up.

Just a bunch of idiots giving the game bad reviews because Blizzard's server took a shit.

nerd ragers will rage. thats how it always have been. good thing i only got back at work at 6

ya.. servers are a drag.. but we all kinda figured it would happen, but not to his extent im sure.. anyways im in act 1 nightmare.. anyone else in nightmare what wants to group up? let me know! HavokCloud#1309

Metacritic user reviews are useless. This is well-known. Joe Average Luser is an even less trustworthy reviewer than a bought and paid for shill.

I don't care about the servers but I've heard some people say they beat it in 8-10 hours...

from being as massive d2 player, from what my friend who is really liking d3 so far has said... D3 wont be as fun to me as d2, but i will wait to try it at his house to decide for sure if i want to buy it or not.

Word is the first person to finish the game did it in 12 hours, idont know if that was solo or multi.... but for a game that took this long to come out and only has 12 hours of play time? sounds pretty weak to me, although i would only play D3 in multi anyways.

So we should give Blizzard a pass since it's not part of the gameplay? Oh wait, that's right we cannot play the game we paid for due to shitty server management on Blizzard's part.

My roommate got Diablo III tonight. He wasn't able to play long enough before the servers went down to have any opinion so I'll present mine.

Always on internet DRM is crap.

Don't buy games with it and they'll stop doing it.

Some server issues are understandable but from what it sounds like this has gone far beyond "some issues". I played WoW long enough to see how badly Blizzard can fail when it comes to server issues. "We'll be done four a couple hours" turns into "the servers were down for 12 hours" without even an apology from Blizzard.

So u pay 60 euros,u get home ,u install the game and than u try to log and u can't because of server spam. U wait and u wait and than u log,but u have lag issues....ok u play 2 minutes than your internet goes down, and u find out that u can't play anymore. Yes all the idiots who should praise bliizard for their DRM,bunch of idiots who pay money but can't enjoy it .

If they had put in an offline and/or LAN mode, people would have something to do during all this downtime.

So now players have extra idle time to write negative reviews since they can't play the game at all.

Blizzard really didn't think that one all the way through. They made their own bed, and now they can lie in it.They shouldn't feel entitled to good reviews.

Don't buy games with it and they'll stop doing it.

Except that this PC game had almost 1 million preorders (not including annual pass, which is another almost 2 million I believe). Just with preorders, this is one of the highest selling PC titles of all time.

Not much of a deterrent...

Of course they did. Once the servers are running everyone bitching and moaning about server issues won't be saying anything anymore, They'll forget they ever had a problem and keep playing. When the next big Blizzard games come out with this shitty DRM the same cycle will repeat itself because they'll think "Blizzard couldn't do this again it must be better the next time", Blizzard has seen it happen numerous times with WoW.

still not much huh i gueeesss we just have owait osme moreeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Servers still not working. This is inexcusable for any company let alone one as established as Blizzard. They better do something to make up for it.

Not even close... Im sure it will be a huge seller and eventually make that list but "just with preorders" its not really even in the top 20.

Back on topic, even once the servers come up people will still be unhappy just not as many.

Like i said earlier though how is BLIZZARD having this much trouble? If this where just about any other company i would be more understanding but this shits old hat for blizzard.

Saddest part is all this trouble over DRM that turned out to be a complete and utter failure (like usual). It didnt even work for a single day, it was cracked before release and there where private servers up within hours of the launch.

Patch that shit out and let me play the damn campaign while you fools fix the servers!

I see 5 parties with this game. Most people fall into one of them.

1- I don't like the game because it's not diablo 2. I feel entitled another Diablo 2. I want more improvements over diablo 2 even though I am a purist and I will bitch about them.

2- I hate drm. I hate that I have to be connected to the internet to play this. Nevermind the fact that the telephone sitting in my pocket has a full time internet connection that is over 10x faster than what was around when diablo 2 came out. The only thing in my home that doesn't have wifi is our toaster and I'll be buying one that does off of amazon the second I see one for sale. Its still wrong for them to require it.

3- I wasn't born when diablo 2 was out. The graphics are garbage, I can only play with 3 other people, how can I call everyone gayballsackfags if there's no pvp?

4- It's a good game. I have fun playing it. Best game ever? No. One of the better releases this year? For sure.

5- I love blizzard do you love blizzard if no fuck you. Best game ever. 11.5/10 because it's diablo 3.

In other words you're #5 because only a fanboy can defend this DRM shit after how badly Blizzard fucked the launch.

I'm #4. I just don't give a shit about their drm. I haven't been anywhere in the past 5 years that I didn't have Internet. Would it have been better to have a separate single player that has items you can't sell on the AH? Sure. But requiring Internet for a multiplayer game isnt something that I would give a good game a 0/10 for.

It's not a multiplayer only game. People need to stop pretending it is. Blizzard has a single player portion and failed servers should NEVER prevent someone from playing a SINGLE PLAYER game. This is one of the most borked launches of what seems like an other-wise good game in a long time.

If they didn't include the auction house I think your point would be more valid. I appreciate the security of a client/server based game. Diablo two was a shining example of how far cheating can get you in a game. Character editors, duping, and regular hacks were rampart in the game. With blizzard including a real money auction house, the added security is welcome in my opinion. The biggest downside I can see is end of life. What happens in 10 years when I want to fire up my old diablo 3 install? Will there be servers around? What about in 20 years? When will blizzard stop supporting a game I paid for?

I'm sick of having to say this because it is so bloody simple: Simply make the single player not have any interaction at all with the online portion. It's not a hard solution. It would prevent people from cheating the RMAH because even if they did dupe items in the single player they couldn't take them online. Hell they could even have two SP modes since some people would like to use AH and get online achievements or transfer the SP characters to MP and what not. To me it sounds like a perfectly simple solution that would make everyone happy.

Can't really argue with that. Would solve my end of life issue too.

Exactly. It would lessen the server issue too since at least people would have something to play while waiting instead of not being able to to play the game they paid $60+ for for a good portion of the day.
