Shuttle XPC SZ68R5

Yeah, the last shuttle I owned was also the nforce2 days.

The SFF market has really kicked in since then though, with the variety of cases and motherboards. I find it really hard going back to Shuttle since you are so limited on expandability and overclocking

I also haven't gone Shuttle's way in a long time. I had a lot of heat issues with my last one, but with some good reviews I would be interested. It is a pretty nice looking mini-case.

Damn, and they call me a big spender! The only significant difference between that and my system would be the cpu draw. I'd say it's worth a shot. Worst case, you sell the shuttle and get a different case/ps/mobo.
 
Are you going with the thermal paste on the Asetek, or replacing it with something else?

Oh by the way, that wireless card i put in rocks. Had to look around for some antennas, but it worked out well.

I am using the original Asetek thermal paste for now. I had used Arctic Silver 5 with the ICE cooler, and plan to use that when I take the assembly back out to replace the fan soon.

This is my first water cooler. Is there any type of thin washer I could use, to keep the radiator from direct access to the case? As the radiator heats up, so does the case.

When I pick up a new Scythe Kama 92mm PWM fan, I'll also grab one of those Intel wireless cards. This would be a perfect box to move around the house and connect to different TVs when needed, to use with a wireless mouse and keyboard.
 
I'm pretty sure Asetek / Corsair / Antec use Shin-Etsu compound. That stuff is pretty good.
 
If I'm not mistaken it has the same exact 500w psu as their SX79R5 LGA 2011 that is launching soon.

Seems to be doing the job, idle temps are 30-32c. If I ever have cause to take it off again I will probably use AS5 also, but I see no need at the moment.

I need a new GPU so it seems that I have some head room to play around with :D
 
^^^ I like how you installed the Asetek cold block on the CPU. Are the I/O water lines under a lot of stress in that configuration?

I ordered that Kama Scythe PWM fan (11 on Amazon vs. 17 on FrozenCPU). I'll see if it is quiet enough to run in constant Mid Mode and drop my temps more.

The flex pipes are under a little stress, but they are made to flex and are very sturdy. I left them that way for 24 hours before assembling the rest of the case to make sure nothing bad was going to happen. Minimal risk if any here imho. That placement leaves the exact minimum of space to fit the drive bay and a full ODD. Asetek did a good job designing/fitting this unit. I will be assembling a different (non-shuttle) unit this weekend for a friend with an H80, have to see how good that build is. For all I know Asetek makes that too, heh,,,

Oh and by the way, I connected the power for the pump directly to the PSU instead of the mobo as JRM did. I didn't want any logic trying to throttle that voltage.

I thought of doing that if I decided to do a push/pull on the radiator, leaving FAN1 & FAN2 for the fans. I do not like the thought of the mobo throttling the pump too. I'll switch it over when I open the case again to install a new fan.
 
What video cards have you guys been putting in the SZ68R5? More specifically the length of your cards that fit?

I am planning on putting in an Asus Radeon 6870 in there, their site list it as 11"?

My 7970 fit, so it is possible, however... If this is the card you are thinking about:

It does not evacuate the airflow out the back and would be a poor and problematic choice for this system as it dumps hot air into the case. You should use something with a reference type cooler. Also cannot tell if that card has top facing or rear facing power connectors, either way, you will need some patience getting it all to fit.

My current recommendation for power:fit ratio for this case is a GTX-560 ti 2gb like the eVGA. Only 9 inches and rear facing power connectors., smooth. Of course I just had to go with the 7970 because, well, er, because!
 
I like your setup, but maybe you could hide the SSD behind the front panel, like this one.

It was an SG41J1 case, so I don't know the R5 front panel inside dimensions, but probably it can work as well.

I just installed my ssd behind the front panel like that. It rests on the usb audio block and it doesn't cover up the 3.5" opening.
 
You guys thinking of putting a mini PCI-E wireless card in there too? Any suggestions for antenna? one i found on ebay that looks compatible is

I used the Intel mini pcie (half-card, important!) mentioned in my parts list posted earlier in this thread. For antennae , I used a mix, I used one of these for my aux connection:

I used a standard 5db 2.4ghz antenna with a 10" pigtail on the main connection. I can't remember where I ordered it from at the moment.
The 10" pigtail was the longest one I could find at the time, it connects the 5db antenna at the back of the cases pre punched hole and runs down between the edge of the case and the video card (see picture link in previous post). I used the laptop type antenna connected to the aux con, ran it around the front to the front of the case, forward of the power supply.

This has proven to be pretty optimum. This puts both antennas on diametrically opposite sides of the case. Right now this combo is kicking the crap out or a D-Link Extreme N with 3 antennas that is in another system I am building.

To those of you who have the SZ68R5, what's to stop you from putting a 120 or 140mm exhaust fan in the top? I'd like to get this thing, but I'm looking to sidestep the reference GPU cooler bias. I have a Twin Frozr cooler on my 6870 and I worry about heat accumulation.

Woah woah woah, not everyone at once! ;) Ultimately, what I'm asking is what is the distance between the back of the optical drive and the back of the case? Room enough to squeeze an 120 or 140mm fan?
 
Interesting idea. One guy posting on the youtube video of the SZ77R5 was thinking of replacing the ICE with a H80 and using an 92/120 adapter to fit the rad on the back. Might be one possible idea to explore as well.
 
If I were to mount a H80 on the outside, I'd use something other than an off-the-shelf fan adapter. That would avoid limiting the rad to only intaking air from inside the case.

I remember doing something simular back in my Nforce2 Shuttle days. Basically use a 80>120mm Fan Adapter and mount a 120mm fan on the outside with cutting the Grill reduced noise and temps by a good amount and it didn't look to geth00 :D
 
Skott/zipz/Volkswagen, any of you gentlemen have one of these systems you can measure for me? Clearance for a top mounted 120mm or 140mm exhaust fan is what I'm looking for, so distance between the rear of the optical and the rear panel of the case. :)

Same here. Debating between the 68R5, the 77R5, or something based on the SG05, the SG08, or the FT03-mini.

Never owned a Shuttle before, but did have a Biostar IDEQ for awhile.

Same here, I'm looking to go to true blooded SFF and my first Intel chip since....well, ever! I'm looking at the SG08 w/ a Z68 board or the 68R5. Something about the 68R5 appeals to me over a piece-by-piece build. Full sized optical? 4 mem slots? 3.5" external bay?

On a somewhat unrelated note, anyone familiar with Shuttle's warranty program? Any good? Easy to deal with?

And for what Intel chip, I'll jump over to the correct thread ;) But I'm thinking some manor of i5. :)

I haven't bought yet either. Waiting to see how good it is before I plunk down money. I plan to either get a SZ77R5 or a SG05. Also waiting to see how well the IB CPU 3750k is in real world benchmarks. April 23rd now supposedly Intel moved up launch date. I probably won't build until July/August.
 
Just put my SZ68R5 together. Stress testing with Prime95 right now, full load temp about 75C? Using the stock ICE cooler here.

FYI to anyone thinking of getting the Asus Radeon 6870, it does not fit, due its width because of its heatsink on the back of the board. So any Asus cards using the "DCU" cooler would probably not fit either. Changing course and ordered a XFX Radeon 6870 instead.

Awesome! You think there is clearance behind the ODD for a top mounted 120/140mm exhaust fan? I'd like to get an exact measure from you off yours if I could. :)

EDIT/UPDATE: I just picked one of these up from NCIXUS for $295. Guess I can do my own measurements now ;) Now just need to get my i5/i7.

Let us know how the mod goes. If it works on the Z68R5 then it should also work on the Z77R5 model as well since they are using the same chasis box. :)
 
As a long time shuttle user (first one was a SB51G, back in 2002), i must say that i'm excited about this and the Z77 Shuttles, even though i'm upset that their lack of focus pretty much killed Sudhian (RIP, beloved place).

Anyway, i'm debating in getting the Z68 and installing a rad on the top as previously suggested.

Since i no longer have a need for an optical drive, i think i could use something like the Corsair H100, but in a way that it will also cool the GPU and place it on the top.

I did something similar back in the day, sans the rad on a SB75, just a blowhole with a 80mm fan, plus the ICE unit and it did wonders for the overall system temps.

Side note, all the fellow posters here that never had a Shuttle, let me tell you, for the last 10 years, i only had Shuttles and it's being hard to get into any other systems, so go ahead, they are very good systems.

And in the other direction, looks to be less. Perhaps at least 120mm? Seems like enough room to fit a 120mm fan if you ask me. I'll be able to confirm this once my system is in hand. But I'm a thinker a couldn't help but try to figure it out and start planning :D

Looks like it might fit. Worse case scenario you could use a 92mm fan instead. There are some nice quiet ones on the market that will move enough air. That would do the trick I bet.
 
OK I took some measurements for those interested in the dimension behind the optical drive.

My optical drive is a liteon iHas 124.

Back of drive to edge of the ICE cooler shroud : ~7cm
Back of drive to edge of case : ~12cm
Depth from top of the case to top of ICE cooler shroud ~3cm
top of case to SATA cable/power connector of optical drive ~2.5cm
Width of the area 14.5cm


Looks like you might be able to fit a 80 or 92mm fan in there only issue maybe the thickness of the fan.
 
Ah, coilz, you're the man! Very thorough and complete measurements. Clearly a man who knows how to mod.

So, the actual measurements are pretty close to what I had guessed based on the picture above. So squeezing a 120mm fan is probably out of the question. But a 92mm would probably fit not problem. My Sz68R5 will be here Thursday (eek!) and I'll take some pics and measurements, etc. I'll link to a worklog here if I end up modding this any.

Got mine in today, but after installing the 2600k, ssd and ram, it won't post. Monitor says no signal. Hdmi or dvi. Ram compatibility issue? No mobo speaker to help trouble shoot. Tried using one stick of ram in each slot.
