Skyrim impressions

There should be a cook book in your inventory which lists all the recipes in some order, and that book should be open when you you're cooking or mixing potions. Or just do as they did in oblivion. I have to agree that oblivion seems better and less waistfull. so many good ingredients waisted due to experimenting.

Which beast race has the better of the abilities, if you *had* to choose either Khajiit or Argonian? I'm thinking of rolling a Khajiit named Hobbes, in honor of the Wing Commander character and the Bill Watterson comic book character :)

Obviously, Argonians are superior. Why would anyone need Night Eye in a game that doesn't even need a single torch in your inventory?

Really your choice at character creation is not going to make or break your game, or even have a significant impact. Just play the character you want, as opposed to what you think will be effective. This is what I like about the TES system, you can be that legendary bosmer warrior, nord mage, or orc thief if that is what you want to be. You are only limited by your imagination and how you want to play, not someone/something else.

Yeah, I would like to go Khajiit, but the night eye isn't that useful. Thanks for the replies.

I mean whats useful isn't that important. Water breathing isn't useful either really, you can enchant a 1 weight item with water breathing, there are water breathing pots, water breathing spell. I'm actually not even sure where you would really need water breathing yet. If anything actually the Khajiit unarmed attack bonus is harder to make up for and replicate later in game. Although granted unarmed isn't all that useful either, but more for style points and flavor.

Water breathing, 50% disease resistance, and Histskin (10x faster regen, 60 seconds).

I'd prefer it to be an RPG. If choices don't matter, why have them?

become a werewolf and you're100% disease resistant.
I do wish that you could execute jumping power attacks or something similar. I would love for a leaping attack from sprinting. Jump on an enemy and knock them down. Seems like the lore demands something like that.

With the run animation they made for werewolves, it is pretty stupid that they didn't allow that to finish in a leaping power attack. It just looks like he's meant to.

Can anyone confirm if the Khajiit claws make them the best werewolves?

The hitskin bonus is what made me go with the Argonian, and it's extremely effective when you're going up against 2 or 3 enemies at once. The Khajit simply doesn't have any useful bonuses.

Separate topic: why on Earth did they make it so you can't jump while sprinting?? I can't think of one good reason. It's really annoying to have to stop sprinting and slow down before you're able to jump. I really hope somebody makes a mod that fixes this. I don't usually bother installing mods, but that's one that I would definitely go for.

I'm trying to fill out the alchemy 'unknown effects'. I'm failing a lot of creations. I don't really want spoilers, but this is frustrating. Some of those ingredients I only had one of.

But that's the whole point. Is failing at making a potion any more frustrating than, say, getting killed? If you didn't fail once in a while, it would be worthless. And when you get to the point where there's only 1 unknown effect left, you should be failing a lot. Otherwise they may as well just take alchemy out and sell potions via vendors exclusively.

If anything, I would've preferred one more layer of difficulty, like say adding in quantities of ingredients as one of the factors to successfully creating a potion. It's a bit too mindless the way it is now.

You can? Just hold shift and then hold left mouse. It's a one-hit-kill in most instances, and fairly often ends in an execution.

Awwwgh. I keep getting tricked by my health bar :(. I'll have like a quarter of a bar left and suddenly the enemy I'm fighting will perform an execution/fatality animation on me.

I swear I'm hitting F5 more than W in this game.

Frost Troll WINS... FATALITY! At least they don't stand there with your severed head in their hands, or have a pack of enemies start devouring you like the death screen in Resident Evil.

stealth requires too much patience :D ...I like to go in swords and magic a-blazing!!

plus after upgrading my one-handed weapon perk I get to decapitate enemies with a power strike

Okay, I have my old save going again thanks to Tapioks and some helpful folks at the nexus. Praise Talos!

I remember when I was playing it previously I was getting slapped around pretty bad. I am attempting to learn more alchemy formulas, smithing and I would also like to start enchanting but I have no good weapons or items to break down yet.

My chief concern is that I have over leveled myself for what I have done so far. I'm not far into the main quest, I have only discovered a few places, only killed a few dragons and only have steel plate armor and a dwarven mace/skyforge axe. I have leveled up like a madman just from sneaking, picking pockets and opening locks. It levels you up way too fast. I saved up two perk choices. I have most of my points into archery, 1 handed, smithing and heavy armor.

What might two choices be good for a redguard dual wielder to either round out my skills or be a great use to me, if I don't already have them? I also inflated my skills by pouring thousands of septims into trainers. My stats say I've trained over 50 times, and I'm level 23...

I was SO close to just re-rolling, I even have a few characters in Helgen Keep "ready to go", so to speak. Should I just start over since I know better now?

just crafted a full set of Daedric armor and it looks spiffy as hell. Oddly I gave my fully upgraded set of Ebony armor to my follower but she still seems to get her ass kicked in one on one situations...I guess not all followers are equal? or are they all that pathetic?

it doesn't sound like you need to... sounds like any of my characters, and i've mostly found the game too easy.

I think it's partly preference though... some people don't like being told "no" by a game, but i don't think the game is hard enough until it tells me "no"

RPG's need encounters that are neigh unbeatable, so there is a reason to improve your character. If you can beat everything you ever come across, what's the point of making twinking your stats to improve?

I have had to leave plenty places, to go become stronger, or improve something, so that i may return and then emerge victorious!

Ugh. I don't want it go get TOO easy. I am on adept right now, I think. Can I safely raise it up to Expert without it being way imbalanced?

Well, that's the beauty of not starting on the highest difficulty--as you go along, if you're finding it too easy, bump it up a notch!

I'm currently trying to find all the ways i can to make the game more difficult so that i can not feel guilty about equipping 2 rings.

I got 100 in smithing last night and made myself a set of Dragonplate.

Kind of confused - is it supposed to have worse stats than Daedric despite being higher up the skill tree?

Looking forward to some armour mods. Ebony is the best-looking gear by far, besides the barbarian-style Studded/Scale whatever it is. I look like some kind of greasy tramp running around in my Dragon stuff.

Dragonplate has worse stats then Daedric. It is however lighter, and the material is much readily available (you can craft it earlier than Daedric, assuming you power leveled smith).

Dragonscale has better stats then Glass.

However, if you wear all 4 armor pieces, there is a physical damage reduction cap of 80% which occurs at ~570-580 armor rating. The side of effect of this (combined with other factors) is that you can actually wear the armor you want style wise, without being impaired in terms of game play.

Since you like the look of ebony, this is actually easily achievable with it.

^^ I like that they did that, and have the alchemy/enchanting loop to exploit so that you can twink shit gear to epic quality ^__^

Is there a way to rotate items when you are holding them in front of you? Right now, placing items on tables, counters, etc., is worse than it was in Oblivion.

I've been using the mage from the Azura shrine and she goes down in one hit; she even has good ebony armor on. My guess is that she's just not designed for close combat.

What has been discussed is that they dont level, so they are stuck on the level that you meet them. I wish you could talk to them and pay them to level up or something.
The later you meet a companion, the higher level they will be basically. That's my understanding. not sure if it's 100% right.

Not a nice *feature* of the game. Your companions should be able to level somehow.

What is this alchemy/enchanting loop sploit? I am intrigued...

Sounds like an awful lot of work for the reward involved. It might just be that I get confused by the walkthroughs I've read, but I think it involves something like enchanting your clothes to be good at making potions that are good at enchanting clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at making potions that are good at making clothes that are good at enchanting armour.

Sorry, I'm a little drunk so I need you to break this down a bit for me. Do you mean that - without enchantments - I can get the same AP from Ebony at max Heavy Armour as I would with Dragonplate? I'm kind of turned-off by most of the gear designs to be honest: I was really excited early on in the game wearing hide/studded/scale and actually looking like a bum-fucking nasty brute, sort of gritty appearance instead of the farty-fairy elven stuff. It was actually when I got to the point where I crafted my first full set of Elven and realised I looked like a drag queen that I made the switch from Light to Heavy.

Also, for everyone asking about companions: as a melee character I've found Marcurio to be the best companion I've tried so far. Pure destruction, and wears whatever gear you drop on him so on the off-chance he does draw aggro OH GOD I SOUND LIKE I PLAY WoW he'll last longer. He seems to main shock spells which rape the magicka away from enemy mages, which are your only real threat as a pure melee build.

There's this new shader mod which hopefully will fix the retarded "light is everywhere" shenanigans.

I really, really liked the screens and installed it, since the FXAA injector mod screwed with my install and made the launcher crash. But this mod took my 6950 OC from MORE SPARE FRAMES THAN I KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH to ~30. It's hard to say as the 4GB mod makes my framerate display disappear, but it's definitely far choppier.

I'm not convinced that is the case. At around level 30, I finally told Lydia to go home and picked up an orc at an orc village, I'm not noticing much difference. This was the first time I'd encountered the follower, but Lydia was still able to take hits in full ebony. The new guy has full ebony, too, but seems to last about as long in combat.

Yes, armor class above 500 has zero benefit over armor class 500.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "without enchantments." But basically if you wear all 4 armor pieces, each armor piece adds a certain amount of hidden AR (armor rating), you hit a damage reduction cap of 80% at 567.

So basically you only need to improve your armor and take enough armor perks to hit that AR, with anything higher having no benefits. You don't need to enchant the armor you craft itself.

For more detail - http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Armor_Rating

Also improving armor adds a set amount of AR based on skills/perks, it is not a percentage based improvement. So if you have the same skill and perks, improving a scaled armor chest piece and a daedric chest piece add the same amount of AR. The base AR of the item doesn't matter in terms of how much AR is added from improvement. Your armor skill/perks though increases the end AR gap though.

Also ~83 AR is equal to 10% damage reduction.

This is why I both love and hate this game(and Oblivion). This after noon after my toddler, my wife and my new born was down for a nap I figured I might as well go and knock out the last 11 points I needed to hit 100 smithing. Cake walk right?

Pfft. Start out in one town and clean them out of the stuff needed and make a bunch of daggers. I go to fast travel to a new town and while moving the pointer to it I noticed a new landmark on my map that I can't fast travel too....

3 hours later I learned 3 new shout words, killed 4 dragons, cleared 6 bandit/evil mage/dead people ruins, randomly had 1 NPC named 'thief' run up to me and call me a quest related name and hand me 500 gold and pulled in one more Daedric item for my collection.

Only once my toddler woke up and it dawned on me we had to leave in an hour(he is spending the night at my moms) that I STILL needed to finish my goal of 100 smithing...

This game is like reading a random wiki page, can spend hours on it and never finish what you started :p

Now a question. Do shields count towards the armor bonuses, if yes are their any good looking dark colored light armor shields?
