Steam Hack Confirmed By Valve

I very much agree that an announcement should be sent via email and/or in the Steam client somehow. Just a message from Gabe on the forums page is not enough.

That's funny, I read just yesterday an article claiming they can destroy your life with just your name.

It really depends on how far they go. If you're a homeowner your name and address are public record already.

When I logged into steam I got a popup with the info now. Still no email, though. Never used the forums, and they got a CC# from a prepaid card that has $6.00 on it right now, so not exactly too worried. Password change, spend my last six bucks on the card, and move on.

150 years. Seriously, they won't be cracking the encryption anytime soon. It's not CC# I am concerned about because I never stored it at Steam, it is my personal info in the hands of criminals that makes me very angry.
I was mildly annoyed a few months ago when CitiGroup mailed me my new credit card (old one had expired), and realized that not only were they issuing me a new card, they had taken the liberty to simultaneously change my credit card number for no apparent reason . Annoying because I had used that CC number so many times at eTailers that I had memorized it. I suppose I should be thankful now that they do this when issuing new cards every few years...

I see the difference. But this is still the same exact thing. They both got hacked, I don't give a rats ass how long it took them to tell to the public. If this was a sony related topic we would be on page 10 by now.

Yep. Not only that, the hackers received praise during the Sony incident (at the expense of the victims, no less). IMO, most hackers aren't black knights doing these things for a just cause; they're just plain old criminals. Anyone in here going to say they're helping Valve up the ante in their security system and we should thank them? :p

It's not exactly the same thing (Sony hack, Steam hack), in that the Steam hack had no bearing on the running of the actual Steam storefront / gaming service. People would be vastly more enraged if they were unable to access their games, or play them online. Imagine millions of MW3 or Skyrim players up in arms over Valve taking down Steam store. That would really be something to get worked up over, not being able to access services you had paid good money for.

So it's not entirely analogous to what happened to PSN.

Thank you for posting this here.

Password changed. Fucking hackers.

So glad that I use Paypal and don't save any of my payment information on the internet. Could care less if they have my name, home address, email address or even birthday. Almost anyone can obtain that information easily if they put in just a little bit of effort.

Sucks to everyone who had their credit card information stolen though, thats no fun.

Hackers don't have to hack Origin to get your information, they can just buy it directly from EA

Just like Steam..and every other online service you use ..and don't forget your CC company sells your info also..welcome to the digital age

yea...#$%^& steam. it is things like farking steam that makes me buy games cautiously.

I'm honestly thinking that I should just go ahead and, for the second time and what will be the last time, cancel my credit card, pay $20 to overnight a new one, and put a 90 day watch on my credit report.

Im kinda thinking the same thing. I was thinking that tomorrow I might call the bank and have my check card deactivated and a new one sent.

you don't really need to change your Steam password if you have Steam Guard enabled

I never got notified.

But then I've never been on the forums. It doesn't say if Steam support is involved. Guess I'll change my account password just in case.

No, they didn't say shit for the last several days and now spring this on us . VALVE DEFENSE FORCE<<<<<< ACTIVATE!

Sony waited nearly a month. The hackers were lol'ing all over the internet for weeks and Sony didn't say a word as if nothing happened. I think you're just butt hurt about people liking Steam. If you don't like it don't use it would be my advice to you. It will save you time and effort in the long run.

I mean I'm not intrigued about the fact they got hacked; but I'm not angry at Valve. Stuff happens all the time. It's all about the manner in which things are reported that counts nowadays. Valve did it in a timely manner after they were sure of what was compromised. Only thing they could have done better was not get hacked in the first place. Which would have been wonderful, but shit happens.

Eh, they can't do that much with just your name and address, unless they want to sign you up for a bunch of magazine subscriptions. :p

They can also sign you up for visits from various annoying religious type people that go walking door to door with their own magazines. :D

I demand a free copy of leisure suit larry for this outrage!!!!!!!!

preferably CGA Larry, that dude knew how to party.

Changed password and secret question. Tired of this. Hope I don't have to get another card issued like I did with the Sony hack. I'm about to stop doing online games.

It's definitely getting discouraging.

son of a bitch, sometimes this place is a buzzkill. I suppose I better change all my info on steam now.

I hope most of the people that post here have an "internets is for lulzing asshats" bank account set up just for this kind of shit, so it doesn't turn into a real hassle in your real life.

Funny, and now you're on the receiving end this time around and seem butthurt that people are putting Sony and Valve together, they both got hacked. Same crap different pile. They both could have done better, I don't give a damn how timely Valve is "perceived" to be. They both need to be held responsible and fanboys not just yourself, make me lol hard.

No... Sony waited forever to say anything. Valve acknowledged it as soon as they figured out the damage that was done. Big difference!

How do you know that? I am sure they didn't just say...Oops, we got hacked...announce it to everyone right now!

I am sure there was an undisclosed time delay where someone figured it out, then someone had to fire that person, then someone else leaked it, then Gabe tried to cover it, then the legal team decided the federal rules that require informing anyone who had card data breached has really forced their hand.

Trust me...they are all about making money, they won't release any bad information unless they are forced too.

These fuckin hackers are getting out of control. Steam is a great service. These douchebags need to focus their time and energy elsewhere.

It definitely points to the weaknesses in valves servers and I'm sure they will be corrected. So far I have kept my distance when it comes to buying from to many sites, this being one of them, even tho I like their prices. I need to see in writing that companies will reimburse me if their servers get hacked, not the usual after the fact and on their terms and what they decide is good for me.

Remember when we just bought games and played them? We didn't need an account for every game with our credit cards tied to it.

But do you see any angry mobs with pitchforks and torches ready to burn Valve to the ground?

Exactly.

Bitch Sony was offline for what a month? Sony = Dicks. When has valve ever installed a rookit on your machine?

hey i just read this about this like a few hours ago... i'm not going to lie... i'm pretty pissed b/c valve is one of those companies that EVERYONE puts their trust in.

>iz has a sad 4 dis< :( :( :( peez fix it gabe

Considering Sony has more customers than Valve does with steam... lol. Plus they are allowing us to play still while any of us can have our stuff compromised.. same crap different pile.

Looking at my email it looks like somebody tried to access my steam account this morning. At least I had the email verification stuff turned on so it doesn't look like they got anywhere

Wasn't it that in Sony's case, the hackers actually managed to get the password and credit card info?

Here, Valve had those info encrypted so even though they got into their system, all they saw was encrypted info.

So people aren't allowed to express relief because Valve responded quickly and apologetically to the hacking, but are also not allowed to condemn Sony who responded slowly, had NO safeguards in place, repeatedly changed its story in an attempt to cover up the incident and its impact, refusing to give an unconditional apology to its customers and blaming the incident on earthquakes and communists?

The fanboys are definitely not all coming from Valve's side of the fence...

Sick of having to constantly change my shit.

This weekend I am just going to go through and remove my info from every fucking site in the world

What a damned annoyance
