And the countdown until the lawyers start filing patent suits begins in 3...2...1. You know, all this patent crap is really getting out of hand. :(

Apple has been picking and choosing its targets for patent infringement litigation carefully, using various patents it owns to go after infringers. This new patent over the simple slide to unlock feature means the company can go after any Android device maker it wants, and likely have success in the courts.

Hey Apple, I have a finger gesture I bet you don't own a patent to

Or maybe they do...

What difference is there to making a gesture in the air vs. one on a glass surface?

I'll patten a picture & sue anyone who happens to look like my picture...

This is pathetic...

This patent infringement is getting ridiculous. Soon, we will reach a point where nobody will want to develop a piece of software, because they are worried that they may be sued out of existence, somewhere down the line.

Just saying... maybe it's not the patents, but the patent infringement? Now, I dislike Apple products for my own set of deal-breaking reasons, but nonetheless, maybe Android handset manufacturers should get a decent patent attorney to ID protected tech and then innovate around these patents.

^ guess General motors should have gotten a good patent attorney and find a way to innovate around bumpers and wheels too. Heck I guess they should have found a way around gas pedals and brakes too.

Waaa. If you infringe, you pay royalties. Or, you remove the infringement and do it a different way. Why is that so bad? Getting tired of every smartphone looking the same. It sure is easy to copy.

I vote Patents being secret until the patent is fully granted. Patents are not retroactive. Patents last one year after they are granted. Patents can then be extended by one year with improvements taht actually improves. An anti example would be "sliding function patent to unlock becoming sliding at any speed you wish to unlock"

That should solve most problems and get people to innovate.

The problem was that Apple was losing the case, because of preexisting art. There were devices before iPhone that had such a feature. I guess the court gave them the patent anyway.

But I don't think Preexisting arts apply anymore after the new patent bill obama passed. The first to file bill... so it's supposedly a legit patent now right?

It's already to that point.

Software or business methods shouldn't be patentable at all. It's as simple as that.

Welcome to the world of big business. Apple is sure not the only company pulling stunts like these. They ALL are doing this every single day. Blame patent laws and yourselves who keep voting in more of the same. People want to do something about it vote with your brains next time from the civic level up, maybe go to Wall Street and join the Occupy movement and do something about it.

I know, how dare they. No morals at all

I hope I'm still alive to see Capitalism die

None of that is/was patented.

"Apple filed for the slide to unlock patent before the original iPhone was released, and just received confirmation of the patent."
i.e., Apple filed its patent a long time ago, and just now had it issued. Blame the USPTO, not Apple.
ALso, this is not about any specific suit, so I'm not sure what you are referring to in terms of "losing the suit."

That does not take effect until next year or later, plus, it would only affect patents applied for AFTER that date. We are still currently working under the first-to-invent system.

the computer you are using was built around capitalism... same goes for your clothes... and the food you eat... why dont you get naked, go to wallstreet and go hungry for a bit.

:)

If there's anyone that wonders why some of us hate Apple...it's shit like this. That's why.

Not gonna happen. With $400k+ in donations they've received so far, he'll have plenty of free pizza to eat.

I don't hate Apple, and I am all for capitali$m, intellectual property rights, etc.

But darnit, I'm p*ssed that a patent lawsuit could, at least in theory, force Android to do away with the swipe login.

WebOS did it a different way. I don't believe they are getting sued.

My WebOS TouchPad still has a slide to unlock feature. It's not a sliding bar but you are still sliding a dot beyond a boundary.

Why sue a company with a dead platform? Android is iOS's main competitor.

Guess you hate Microsoft even more then because not only did they patent some BS things like this but THEY actually went after Android and now 50% of all Android manufacturers are having to pay Microsoft. (Apple hasn't actually gone after anybody, much less taking money from, anybody over this)

Ironically though, Samsung's getting sued for looking too much like the iPhone, yet it's the one Android manufacturer I know who's skin doesn't have anything like a slide to unlock. (it's a puzzle piece that you fit into a hole of the same shape to unlock your phone)

Yeah because socialism works so well. Enjoy your breadlines and crime infested community housing waiting for your next handout.

I'll be working to live in a nice clean home enjoying the benefits of my labor.

Pretty hard to innovate when some douchebag company tries to patent a bunch of menial shit that they don't necessarily even use.

The point being, what if it was? Ford would have been the only car company. Options and competition drive innovation just as much as being forced to do it a different way. Granted, GM could have just gone with a joystick/button speed control system. but personally I prefer to have all cars the same so I know how to drive all of them.

The apple patent is on "any predefined gesture to unlock a device"... meaning any swipe to unlock (samsungs puzzle piece to unlock, any of androids 5 different unlock styles available in cyanogenmod) is blocked. What other ways are there to do this? Face-to-unlock doesnt work very well and has its own set of flaws. Audio unlock would be a bitch to use in loud environments. A hardware button is bumpable... a swipe gesture of any type is intrinsically logical.
Android's pattern lock screen is what i personally use... Is the gesture "predefined" since it was defined before the screen was locked or does "predefined" mean coming from the factory that way? Sometimes even when other people ARE trying to innovate and do things other ways, patent vagueness and patents on intrinsic ideas get in the way.

Maybe guys, just maybe, Android is a stolen product and Apple is valid here.

I know right, Crazy.

The apple patent is for "predefined gestures to unlock a device" which means sliding the puzzle piece to the hole is technically a predefined slide gesture. Which means Samsung's method fits under this too. Pretty much the only way to avoid this is to just use a hardware unlock or a "non-predefined" gesture. The vagueness of this patent is painful.

I love how everyone is hating on Apple when MS right now is collecting $5-$15 per Android device because of licensing/patent issues.

You know what they say... if you can't innovate, buy up all of the patents regarding what you do and sue the competition out of existence.

Exactly. Capitalism is good for the most port IMHO. The amount of crony capitalism that takes place is pretty disgusting though.

Did not say Socialism was the answer, I don't know what is. We already have Corporate Walfare and will bailout any bank, company or corporation that needs it. So I guess Capitalism is ok.

I already own a few houses and cars. Waste of money cause I spend most of my time at the lake lot..
