Dark Souls Thread

Yea i just jumped from above onto him and attacked, did that 2-3 times and he was just about dead. Damn it I missed the winged spear in the first initial camp fire area outside the tutorial area. got to go back to get that thinggggggggggggggggg.

I picked up the hardbound guide, man this thing is huge and awesome

There's a winged spear? :O. I probably missed a bunch of other things too lol. Any chance we can get a small screenshot of a page from the guide? Kinda curious to see if it has things mapped out with pictures, etc or if it's just a wall of text.

I've just been using the Dark Souls wiki page which has a live chat function on the left column. There's seems to be around 500-2000 people using it at any time. Really good source of information if you're stuck or have a quick question to ask.

Wait? What? Where?!!!!

The winged spear is close to the inital starting area after the tutorial. It's a dead corpse loot guarded by a giant skeleton. The skeletons are tough at lower levels but they can be killed with some skill.

The skeletons are in the graveyard just past the area with the pool of water.

Ok know where you are talking about... Going to have to go back there.. Up at Undead Burg atm.

Man, I'm getting destroyed by the Capra Demon. The weakness of the Thief is totally exposed when it comes to bosses. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Unless I'm not supposed to go to the Capra Demon after the Gargoyles but I don't see anywhere else to go. I might have to breakdown and use the Drake sword like everybody else.

Quick question everyone. I pretty much avoided Demon's Souls because of how difficult I heard that it was, but now that the price is only $19.99 and with all of the positive reviews I'm seeing for Dark as well, I'm considering one of them to try. I guess what I want to know is, which one has a slightly easier learning and playing curve, Demon's or Dark? Its not that I'm against challenging games but I do have a new son that's only a year old and he demands a lot of my time so my gaming time is very limited which means I only get to play when I have free time, sometimes its only 30 minutes or an hour a day if I'm lucky.

Any preference or wait until I have more free time to play?

Just go with Dark Souls. Both games have more of a learning cliff than a learning curve, so you're going to get owned for a bit either way. The new game will have a much more active online community, and will give you a better game experience. The online aspect really makes the game.

Okay, 2 questions.

1. Where us the winged spear?
2. Where did you pick up the guide?

I got frustrated with the Capra Demon on my Thief so I decided to make a Knight. I got the Drake Sword and I'm just smashing through the game now, what a joke. I'm pretty sure the whole shooting off the tail this early in the game is a glitch. I don't think it was the developer's intention for us to one-shot everything for the first 10 hours. The Drake Sword backstabs for more than my Bandit Knife +5. So much for higher crits on daggers eh.

Just started up a deprived. Made it to Lordran. Man, thats the craziest tutorial level (if you can call it that) I've seen. What gifts/traits did you guys pick when making characters? I picked the ring that gives life regen.

This ring does not regenerate HP, the in-game description was apparently mis-translated. All it does is bump your HP a bit (by 5% I believe).

I selected the master key, as mentioned it's the only gift that doesn't appear anywhere else in the game. It will save you from a lot of back-tracking and/or forgetting to go back later (when you find the actual key), missing out on potentially valuable items.

If you select a thief, you get a master key automatically so you can start out with 2 gifts. I selected the pendant on my thief build.

I have to disagree with bpizzle1, you're much better off with Demon's Souls at this point for several reasons.

- Firstly, the cost. It's not gonna get cheaper than that, and you'll be hard pressed to find anything else that gives you that kind of bang for your buck. By the time you're done with Demon's Souls, Dark Souls may come down in price slightly as well.

- As for the gameplay, it is an easier game...not by a big margin but a noticeable one. I'm a Demon's Souls veteran and I'm still having issues in Dark Souls figuring out what's what. The layout itself is much more simple. All the worlds are connected by the 'Nexus' which, if you don't already know, is kind of a pitt stop where you can access all the worlds from. If you try one area and it's too tough, you can try the next area. There's a guy there who'll hold all your stuff for you, a merchant, people who'll teach you magic, etc...It's very convenient. Dark Souls is one big world in which many people seem to be getting lost.

- Whichever one you pick, you will have tons of questions. Right now, the wiki and knowledge base for Dark Souls is very thin. Demon's Souls, conversely, has a very thorough wiki and tons of FAQs and walk-throughs online. If you play Demon's Souls first and then move on to Dark Souls, by then its resources will be complete.

Lastly, the servers for Demon's Souls are only going to be up for a limited time (less than a year left I believe). In all likelihood, whichever one you play you'll probably love it and will want to play the other one next. You may as well play Demon's Soul first while the servers are up and get the full experience. Then you can move on to the tougher & more complex Dark Souls.

LOST 50K SOULS I FARMED TO STUPID GHOSTS FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

THIS GAME IS PISSING ME OFF LOL! My thief is lvl 25 and I think I died 30+ times on the capra demon tonight and never beat him. I logged onto my lvl 16 Knight and one shot him . I think my thief looks awesome but I seriously can't believe what a handicap it is to play one. This is pissing me offffffff

being thief doesn't mean you have to use dagger

just so people don't get the wrong idea, master key doesn't open every door

That's no fun though D: I kinda like to use the weapons associated with the class, not that I'm a hardcore RPer but I just like the way the thief looks and the playstyle that comes with staying under 25% equipment burden and the dagger. Maybe I'll just have to suck it up and bump my strength to 16 and use the Drake sword. Maybe daggers will be viable later.

I don't get it, at those soul levels it shouldn't matter what your class is. The only thing class affects is the gear you start the game with and your initial points distribution.

*Nevermind, just saw your explanation above.

I think mage classes and maybe Knight start out with certain spells also, not just a gear/stat assortment

but yeah for the most part, starting class will not matter one iota once you get to around 35-40+

i picked thief, and i've just been jacking my endurance and dexterity, i'm level 21 atm, i grabbed the astorea's sword and dragon shield or w/e it is, and my equip burden is 50 i think, i have full speed rolls with sword & shield, but str is lacking (only 12 right now, vit is 11)

Wait? What? Where?!!!!

When you are at Firelink Shrine main hub place, the area behind the huge ass crow, graveyard with powerful skeletons.

If you hug the wall to the right you will find a corpse up against a grave and you will find the winged spear, i've enchanted it to +3 so far and it tears through everything. Be careful when you pick it up though :eek::eek::eek::eek:

If you keep bumping your dex and endurance, your daggers will do insane crit damage.

Ok yeah figured that part out. However I am lvl 16 warrior and still cant beat the damn skeletons!!! I can take one on at a time and take him out after a while but it takes forever as I am maxing out at 10-14 damage!!! They are not vulnerable to fire... I actually was able to run through the graveyard and grab some items from the bodies before they got me and never got the spear, only got a large mace... WTF?!... Now I am at Undead Parish and getting ready to fight the MechaBoar.

Quick question, there is a Black Knight that is down guarding a body. How in the #$(& do you beat him?

If you drag the skeletons all the way back to the doorway in which you came through, you can fight them 1v1 in the door. Takes a while, but you can take them down.

The black knight is kinda the same way, hit him with a throwing weapon of some sort and run back up a few flights of stairs to that little circle-like area in between the two houses and fight him there. You can just circle strafe and wait for him to do his double attack and smack him each time. Takes a while, but it's doable.

Just level up more and come back to him later will be much easier :)

I FOOOKIN LOVE THIS GAMEEEEEE

Whoa, daggers are modified by endurance too? Reality said he's just been putting points into Dex/End and ignoring the rest too. Guess I messed up.

Just run past the skellies When you first walk into that area, jump down from the stairs to loot the item on the left cliff, then run through the middle to loot the next item, then cut to the right to loot the winged spear. Then run forward for the next two items ending with the binoculars at the edge of the cliff, then jump off and die :D. I did it on my knight right after getting out of the tutorial.

He's easy to beat legit as well, just clear the baby skeletons first and then you have all the room to work on the big guy. It took me about 5 mins to chip away at his health but I don't see any other shortcut. Wait for him to swing and then attack while he's in recovery. He'll then try to stomp you with his foot so just backstep that and wait for another swing before you attack and repeat. Or you can lure him up the steps you came down from, get him to attack near the edge of it, then circle-strafe him so his back is facing the cliff. Sometimes he'll do a leap back after attacking or stomping and fall to his death.

I just went out and got the guide. wow. this is a fucking strat guide. If anyone needs or wants me to post up any pictures, maps, strats from the guide let me know!

If it's not too many pages, does it have a condensed list of weapons/armors and the minimum stats to wear them? It'd be nice to know how much we have to invest in each stat for a particular playstyle. The wiki pages seem to be grossly incomplete/wrong.

Sooo many pages.....Anything in particular? I'll keep looking for a index of reqs.

i lured the black knight out where the undead were and climbed the ladder, shot him with arrows til he was done. worked well, took zero damage.

ditto on the strat guides here... gamestop completely out, say more coming monday.

Oh, in that case, I wouldn't even know where to start. Maybe someone further in the game would be able to narrow the more interesting things down. Thanks for the offer though!

I'm still debating whether or not to continue beating my head against the wall with my Thief or just continue chopping everything down with my Drake sword on my Knight.

Edit: Actually, can you post the stats for Sword of the Moon. It's supposed to be the best Int modified weapon but the wiki says it requires 60 strength which I'm pretty sure is a lie.

Here's a really scummy way of beating that black knight. Get his attention, and then run back towards the staircase where a flaming barrel was rolled at you. Fall off the side onto the little ledge that runs along the stairs' base. The black knight will chase after you and fall to his death.

There is no such thing as scummy in DS! Take it anyway you can get it I say. This strategy sounds pretty cool!

Cool went back and figured out that I was in the completely wrong area for the Winged Spear, didnt realize you could run through some of the graves. Finally got it with a secondary character (bandit). Other one that I got was the Morning Star... Was hoping to beat the Black knight Legit but if nothing else I will just pelt him with arrows (guess I should invest in some more expensive ones then).

Also, anyone else having issues with Jumping and kicking? Message on the ground says kick is Left stick + RB (xbox) and Jump is Left stick + RT.. but never seems to work... did figure out that you can run and jump/tumble by sprinting then letting off B and then tapping B quickly after.

i used the arrows that are 10 souls a piece....

jump kick works with no weapon in right hand.

in the graveyard... don't forget to nab the sweet sword. starts with a z, can't recall the name. requires 24 str to wield it though.

i'm thinking of picking up this game since everyone is raving about it. Can someone give me a list of what make this game so good? Is there multiplayer? mic support?

man I'm so torn on buying this... I've got Demon's Souls that sat in the drawer forever, just started playing it last week with 4-5 bosses down now...

do I finish it, do I say screw it and go get Dark Souls now?

I've also got SWTOR weekend beta to play this weekend... aaahhhhhhh lol

Dark Souls isn't going anywhere. I'd wrap up Demon's Souls first.

I'm back, and here's the news, I'm level 18 in Dark Souls, playing it on and off. Enjoying it thus far (of course, how could I say otherwise? :p ) I died plenty, in fact, I died more the IGN guys did on their live stream.

Honestly, I've been talking about this game between my friends and CryingGod, I commented that it feels like Demon's Souls is a tutorial that prepares you for Dark Souls, I even said this would be the case BEFORE the game was released. I still feel that what I said was an accurate statement on the difficulty of this game.

If any of you have NOT played Demon's Souls, BUT ARE interested in Dark Souls, I recommend playing Demon's Souls first, since the online component will remain online for a few months more, and Dark Souls will have a more fleshed out community, including the free wikidots for both games

Google Demon's Souls wikidot, and Dark Souls wikidot, both have their own pages chock full of information. Consider those 2 sources your DEFINITE source for all things on both games, they are well maintained, and more info is being added to the Dark Souls database as people play more and more of the game. As for the Demon's Souls wikidot, it's very very comprehensive and should be full of all the information you'll need to play the game.

However, I do feel like the AI is pretty stupid in some places. I notice it's easy to cheese some of the mobs if you really want to (for the record, I dislike cheesing mobs).

Anyway, I tried just about every class except Deprived, and I have to say that Pyromancer is a great starting class to use, however, I picked Wanderer as my main.

Tonight's goal is to beat the Undead Parish if at all possible.

Altiar285 is my PSN id, feel free to contact me, I will have a USB keyboard hooked up to my PS3 for replies, OR, if you want to PM me your Steam ID, I can add you and we can talk as we play.

Anybody is welcome to add me.
