Rage sucks

People keep saying Stalker, FNV, Oblivion, Dead Island, etc... were unplayable at release... I bought all of these games launch day and never had an issue through the entire game.

Then again, I run a dedicated gaming rig that gets minimal changes. People should try that some time, as well as finding the enterainment IN games rather than trying to be entertained BY them.

All of those were pretty buggy. I wouldn't say a single one was unplayable for the majority, though.

will buy a good game on pc even if it is consolized. will not buy Rage as it did not interest me and was not optimized for pc.

Well, now that that's cleared up... :D ;)

Sorry, this thread's got me feeling a little saucy! (and not for or against RAGE, or anyone's comments)

The comparison videos on the front page are not ugly or plain by a long stretch.

Yes, there does appear to be a bit of a problem with AMD drivers at present (bad for me).

Yes, there is some texture load lag.

But the game looks good and the play looks fine.

I'm just starting to install it now.....so we'll see.

I wouldn't say this game "sucks".....it does have some PC issues though.....shame on id.

If they fuck us in Doom 4 like they did with Rage... I'm done with ID forever.

I never had an issue with STALKER at all. Oblivion, I occasionally ran into the odd small issue, plot hole, etc. but nothing major... ...until now... I've had it for years, and now it decides it doesn't want to start. I fixed this once, (can't remember what the root cause was,) but had to reinstall, and just didn't feel like researching it again. Fallout 3 is doing it now too. I never played past the first town, so decided to go back and try it. Gets to the title and crashes out. At least RAGE starts and plays. Just has too many graphical glitches for me to play until it's fixed. Didn't pick up Dead Island. I've got enough zombie action with L4D/L4D2.

Yeah, that would do it for me too. As of this moment, I'm still an id fan. We'll see how RAGE plays out, but yeah, if they ruin Doom 4 that would be it for them as far as I'm concerned. I don't even look at RAGE like they ruined it yet. If I'm able to play it the way it's supposed to look soon, I'm good.

So, anyone try those new "corrected" RAGE drivers from ATI yet? Won't be home for hours, so I'd really like to know if they do anything at all.

That driver package is a tremendous improvement. It fixed the artifacting issue for me, as well as the flickering objects, and it reduced texture pop-in lag to a reasonable level. It's part of the engine, so it can't be eliminated entirely, but I'd say AMD reduced it as much as can be expected ~18 hours after launch.

maybe rage works better on next gen cpu/gpu that isnt out yet for pc.

i remeber unreal 3, when that came out on my old pc i can see the texture poping but newer pc i can't

well this sucks, im also having the texture popin issue, but its not only a popin issue as some of the textures arent loading at all as seen below

I'm creating the cache folder right now to see if that helps fix it, but any other input would be appreciated. My nVidia drivers are also all up to date.

Another post-quake Carmack / id trash release. They really need to just stop making games and stick to what they do know - making engines. I kind of chuckle at people who throw $60 at garbage like this, but we've all been suckers at one time or another in this industry.

Nice! Looks like this is being echoed by more people than not over on the Steam forums too. Can't wait to give it a try when I get home.

I don't know what you guys are complaining at. ID games have always been sold as tech demo's for their engines with a demo game attached.

Not smart enough to know this?

What?

Doom 1 and 2, and Quake 1, 2, and 3 were great games in their own rights. Sure, they were formulaic corridor shooters, but that's what id does, so that's what was expected. They sure weren't tech demos.

I personally don't like the autodetect settings feature, I'd prefer being able to manually set quality options, such as texture resolution, view distance, effects, and so forth. This game could look a lot different for gamers depending on how the autodetect sets it up for your system.

making the cache files / config files didnt help at all, textures still pop in a lot or dont show up at all  my in game monitor, as show in the screenshot, is also showing low gpu usage in game

well guess i need to wait till ID puts out a patch or nVidia updates there drivers....

That's saying it like AMD did not get a preview version to test their drivers on. I can't believe that id would not let them work out bugs with a preview, weeks if not months in advance, so this type of stuff doesn't happen. It shouldn't happen.

Wait. So the onus is on AMD to make their drivers work with this game?

I think that's a bit backwards.

id is good at making mindless fps shooters with great engines. They really shouldn't pretend they can do more. Rage is like a fps with pointless rpg elements you are forced to go through in-between all the action. There's no freedom, no choice, its completely linear, no destructable environments, and stupid game design.

The only reason this will sell at all is id's name.

My understanding is that the driver they posted last night was mispackaged with an older, broken OpenGL component. It's a simple mixup, but one that happens, and unfortunately for them one that may have cost them some brownie points. It took them some time to discover the error, and then to get the fixed driver package built, then tested, then posted.

Given AMD's past history of sometimes forcing gamers to wait a month or more for a driver to work properly with a new game, I think they are doing much better.

installed newest amd drivers, it helps, but the texture pop in is still 100% noticeable, and I also just ctd after 10 min of playing.

Texture popup is a game problem

I really don't like it either, it actually takes away from the gameplay IMO

The question is... why does my Quad Core, 6 GB of RAM, CrossFire 6970 system still look like a damn XBOX... with textures that disappear when you look away and SLOWLY redraw when you get closer / turn back... this is absolute crap. PC's are not limited in the same way that consoles are, and quite frankly, it's an insult to the guys (us, the pc gamers) that made them who they are today.

I share your feelings

Behind the times, this thread is..

New AMD drivers released. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx

http://twitter.com/#!/CatalystCreator/status/121334209393606656

Honestly, it sucks. I agree. But there's a disconnect between both AMD and id. Drivers weren't released when they were supposed to.

Glitches aside, this has no bearing on how the game behaves with regards to the differences in PC and console.

1 of my video cards alone contains 4 times the video memory, and my system ram contains 8 times the system memory of an xbox... i have no customization of graphical options outside of resolution, AA, and brightness. I SHOULD NOT see what I'm seeing.

This is a big fucking middle finger to the PC community.

The only solution is to stop buying these games at release, and if they're shown to suck, don't buy them at all. Sales drive more console ports our way, and for many games I'd rather they not have bothered with porting that console junk over to us in the first place.

Do it right or don't do it at all.

The "Press Enter To Continue" at the main screen really shoves one up the chocolate highway to us PC gamers... because it makes it so fucking obvious that it's a console port, as well as the lack of graphical options.

Brent, I have read it. I contributed to it already multiple times throughout the day.

That was posted an hour ago, I guess missing 2-3 pages within an hour is missing the entire thread. Oh well, if it was posted already then so be it.

Edit: 1 page back, lol. Go me

I only wish I had the physical media to go give this royal piece of shit back to ID with a creative touch. I would drive my happy ass 30 miles to Mesquite to do so.

Why is everyone so surprised that this game doesn't live up to their monumental expectations? Id's last game was DECENT at best. Why should they be expected to do any better than they're last job. Ever heard the saying "Your reputation is only as good as your last job". We all know that ID has much to prove.

WHEN THE FUCK ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE QUAKE 5 ARENA?

Well except for the (yet again) monotone brown no-def textures.

These sorts of comments always get me. Ok, so you don't have to like these color schemes. I'll grant you that. However, exactly what color scheme do you expect to see in a dust covered, desolate, post-catastrophic-event, world? Umm, that's right, rocks, dust, rusted metal, maybe a slightly darker tint to the light, etc. Maybe some sparse vegetation.

Makes me laugh even harder when people complain about the inside of a space/science installation "looking the same through the whole game". Well, that's where the story takes place.

So by these standards we should have happy rainbow colored, randomly generated piles of nonsense to play in?

I guess don't buy a post-apocalyptic shooter if you don't like brown? Don't buy a game set in space, if you don't like the way a space station or installation looks?

This isn't directed squarely at you by the way. Your opinion is just as valid as mine. I see so many comments like these though, and just wonder... how else should it look?
