Windows 8 Beta

It looks like windows 8 is using a lot of gpu computing... I wonder whether it runs better on an AMD or NVIDIA card...

So it says on the dl page it supports installation from USB drive...I wonder if the steps are the same as W7? I am banking on it because I don't have any dual layer dvds

windows USD DVD tool will likely do it fine.

I wish they would have used Windows 8 to go full 64-bit moving forward. Not sure why they are continuing 32-bit support. Windows 7 is a good enough OS to run 32-bit devices until EOL.

Anyone up and running yet? I need to put an old hdd in my system and try this out.

I have it downloaded. Just don't have the time to install it at the moment. My plan is to wipe my PC desktop and install it there. I primarily use a mac now so I can put it on my desktop with no worries.

BTW, anyone want to buy an imac?

x64 failed in virtual box and vm player. Trying hyper-v and real hardware now.

Real hardware seems to be working better so far.

Got distracted with other things, just started downloading, got an hour left for the x64 developer version, EP121 backed up and ready to go. Wish this were a weekend!

Writing to a flash drive as we speak and going to dual boot on my X120e.

Still chugging along at 243Kbs.... :(

Guess I will install on on my laptop tomorrow before work. Then show it off at work...

My main complaint with Metro Right now with Mouse/KB is when you run out of horizontal screen space (yes you can do that @ 2560x1600) you are pretty much forced to click and drag the scroll bar.

Also, I really miss being able to just press the Windows key and start searching for things.

A feature I like is that you can dock metro apps on the side of the screen with your classic desktop open, and it just shrinks the size of the desktop, it doesn't cover anything up. Very nice.

Will this preview allow you to play games on it like BC2 etc? Or is this just a look and see type deal? Also in that screen shot above, is that what the desktop looks like now? I hope not because I would hate that, it looks like Windows 7 mobile which I can not stand...

That is the start screen, clicking the desktop tile or pressing the windows key brings you to the classic desktop. Performance wise it is seemless though, there is no delay to load the classic desktop.

As for BC2 it should work, but thats not to say your video drivers will be good/stable, or you won't find other problems because this is PRE-Beta.

Can you disable that start screen thing and have the W7

again, before people draw conclusions off of this... this is pre-beta.

Everything is subject to change :p

Well mine finished downloading. I'm just not sure its worth it. I really hate W7 mobile and it looks like W8 is pretty much W7 mobile for the desktop. What about drivers? Are Nvidia's drivers well supported in it?

It should support the same drivers. The driver model changed with vista and has been carried forward since.

I personally LOVE the WP7 GUI. So i'm really looking forward to windows 8 tablets.

Scroll Wheel? Up/Down or PgUp/PgDn on the keyboard? You're not forced to drag the scroll bar by any means.

Also, you can still do windows key + type to search.

Search key is the Windows key.

Gah, really wish there was a way to disable Metro.

I never noticed that o.0 Thank you!

I'm still dual boot CrOS and Win7, lol. It's getting tight on this 40GB Intel SSD :p

Burning DVD now (I got a bunch of them, might as well make use...).

I wasn't aware of pg up/down that seems to work OK, arrow keys just scroll through the tiles though, and it may be the weird ass wheel on my G5 mouse, but it scrolls really slow using the mouse wheel for me.

My download hung at 3.5gb of 3.6gb and I can't get it going again. Downloading again.

So is it possible to ever close the Metro apps without using the task manager? I get that they go in a suspended state, and with 12gb of ram it doesn't really effect me, but why on earth can I not simply close a program? Also apparently it was their goal to make it really difficult to just shut down/reboot

You shouldn't need to close apps - they get automatically suspended/closed as appropriate.
