So it seems NVIDIA is picking up the glove from AMD. This is great news for the impatient ones among us. Let´s hope this means; available on the market in 2011.

From Nordic Hardware:

"Between the Fermi generation and Kepler, which we should start shipping by the end of the year, there is about 3x improvement in [double precision] performance per watt. [...] We are about to introduce [our next-generation GPUs]," Chris Malachowsky en av NVIDIA:s grundare."

Nice, I had almost been wondering if they'd make it... I notice amd 6970 are gone basically from newegg. Gtx 580 are being price slashed too... maybe oct isn't so crazy to think of after all for 28nm stuff from both camps!

I can´t imagine a decision to stay at current levels for performance and high end. Would be a very bad mistake not to follow AMD on this.

I hope everyone ups the RAM. I do not think that Nvidia will be able to launch in 2011, from my understanding that would be a remarkable time from tape out to release for any company. That being said, Nvidia has a bit of a bad history when it comes to new process transitions, most recently shown by the whole Fermi fiasco. All the recent indications that I have seen from Nvidia are somewhat indicative of another rough launch (accusations already thrown out at TSMC over their manufacturing process). That is not to say that it isn't partially TSMC's fault; I have heard that their 28nm HP process is having some trouble. Nvidia just can't adapt like AMD can on this round, AMD got lucky enough to have somewhat ideal conditions for them to use a process that has less issues than the HP process.

edit: please don't ask for sources I don't want to track down like 7 different sites for this stuff, I will though.

This is a clear case of someone spouting without clear information. The Fermi "fiasco" was due to a chip design issue requiring more tapeouts (A03 shipped)... not because of the process.

The only case where what you said was true was the old FX series (5000 series)... but the majority of the problem there was just poor architectural design.

The 580 are considered the real Fermis, not the 480, although they were called Fermis.

That aside, earlier this year, Nvidia did promise a much better release of the next chip set. While naturally a wait and see attitude is appropriate, but if they do come out (in great quantities) with these for the 2011 holiday season, then it would be a great boon for the green team.

probably aiming for 31st Dec :) can't afford to let AMD have another 6 months lead otherwise things might look far bleaker than the are atm. Still think AMD will hold a strong price/performance advantage but looking forward to new silicon to push BF3 to the max.

Things aren't bleak now, I'm confused by your statement  . Also, no one's going to launch on New Year's Eve, sir.

A) your sarcasm meter is broken :confused:GoldenTiger. He means, they will release it in 2011, if they release it on Dec 31st. Kinda keeping their word.

B) Bleak might be an overstatement, but considering the performance the 69xx series delivers compared to the 5xx series, it's a no brainier in the bang for buck or bitcoin mining category. ATI has the upper hand.
:p

Would be good to get a joint release (or close release) so that a nice price war starts and we all win. Hoping for both to bring out all the power they can, even though CUDA means my decision is pre made. I'm hoping for 3GB standard for the high end, or even 6GB like the recent quadros.

I kind of agree about bitcoin, because so far I have made over $1500. By not buying 4 x 6970s + electricity. :p

I can see Nvidia shipping out working samples to premier vendors at the end of the year and then a limited hard launch at the end of Jan.

I can't wait. I really trying to hold out on a second GTX570. The sooner that they release the next gen the better.

Oh, I knew what he meant, I was just responding in kind ;).

lol need some <sarcasm> tags, hoping this gen offers us something exciting, and i can't miss a chance to try and ruffle GoldenTiger's feathers :)

Keyword: "should". We will see, this is definitely not a confirmation by Nvidia that they plan to ship, but speculation from an employee (who is probably catching shit for it).

Shipping does not mean being available for purchase. It's more along of the lines that Nvidia will be shipping GPUs to AIB partners so they can get packaging and such together. There will probably be a gap of a month or two from the time Nvidia "ships" Kepler till the time you can order it from Newegg or other retailers. So if they make their target and ship in in December, you'll be lucky to get your hands on it before February 2012.

In Fermi's case, the paper looked much more impressive than the hardware

Exactly, paper specs always look and sound better than the actual performance of the hardware.

The only time the paper was on par with the hardware was when the G80 GPU was released back in 2006.

its about the same "should" as we are getting from AMD?

Hope this is true, because I sold both of my GTX 580's. I just hope NVIDIA uses more VRAM and not this 1.5GB bullshit or whatever, I'll be happy with 2GB or more.

Wouldn't you be ruffling his fur not feathers?

With that horrible joke out of the way......

Be nice to see both sides get cards out this year, but I'm not expecting it. If it does happen I think the only thing we will see is a paper launch and extremely limited quantities for a few months.

Just reading that, has anyone noticed that it says 3x improvement [double precision] performance per watt and not the actual performance of the card? It seems they got their power usage down but what is the actual performce of the card compared to their latest offering?

You can also speculate about to which version of Fermi are they comparing this increase of performance / watt, the first version, aka 480, or the improved version, aka the 580.

Nvidia has released another statement, and they are not shipping Kepler in 2011. From the article, full production will not even happen before Q1 2012.

Although we will have early silicon this year, Kepler-based products are actually scheduled to go into production in 2012. We wanted to clarify this so people wouldn’t expect product to be available this year," said Ken Brown, a spokesman for Nvidia, in an email statement.

Wow this isnt good news at all for Nvidia.

With AMD cards coming out soon, and Bitmining making a bank for AMD....Nvidia don't have much time to wait around.

Look at the stock of 6990's and 6970's.....Bitminers are buying them up like mad.

Agreed.... bah! Looks like AMD will have free reign to charge high prices for a few months. Hopefully it'll be worth it...

Where? Certainly not on Newegg!

Newegg was selling them for $500+ forever, now they're sitting at $460-470 with $30-40 MIR's on top of that... not sure what else a price slash is ;)...
