Was wanting suggestions from the best forum around to help me decide on what GTX 580 to buy. I'm running one 25" monitor at 1920x1200. I was thinking about buying this one-

I haven't owned a nvidia card since a BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra OC and that card was awesome. I've been using ATI cards since then but as of recently im disgusted with my crossfire setup (getting it to work correctly with some of my older games) so im going back to a single card use from now on.

i love how the n00bies are chiming in. Yes, it is powerful, and yes, it is quiet. However, between the the two, there is no bad choice. It is your money, the eVGA will likely OC rather well, perhaps upt o or beyond the MSI Lightning speeds, and the support is top notch, offering 90 day step up, and lifetime warranty, and the option for Adv. RMA replacements. It is your call.

Thanks for the help guys. The PNY 580 has a good price Xeth but i want something with little better cooling. The MSI lightning is looking good for what i need so far . Im still looking though. What about the ASUS ENGTX580 DCII, anyone have any opinions on this card?

Good cooling, but only a 3 year warranty (I don't know how long you plan to keep the card). Not worth the extra cost for the upgraded cooling, IMO.

Yeah the warranty on the EVGA is sweet. I will probably use the card i buy for a couple years. Does the EVGA run little hot? Was reading different reviews and from what i read it does get warm.

I just got done testing ASUS DirectCU II and the EVGA Superclock GTX 580's and I prefer the DirectCU II over the EVGA ones, which are reference designs. ASUS 580's run cooler and are much more quiet, especially at higher fan rpm's. The EVGA 580's can get fairly loud so keep that in mind.

If you have room for a three slotted gfx card, I definitely recommend the ASUS over the Evga. Build quality is top notch, cooling and noise levels are hard to beat.

3 year warranty vs lifetime... well, I don't keep my cards around that long so this is non factor for me. These will probably be on the selling block before the new cards come out.

I cant seem to find a MSI Lightning in stock anywhere except the 3 GB version. Anyone have any links to lead me to one?

If you plan to keep the card for "a few years" than why not spend the extra 70$ and get th 3gb version of the gtx580 lightning?
You can sli another for cheap later.

This thread is bringing back memories about the insane Amazon 480 lightning deal ($349 I think). They cancelled my order and so I got over it. I checked slickdeals a couple weeks later and found out other users were able to get the deal after haggling over the phone. Now seeing the card for $499 makes me facepalm.

happymedium i was thinking the same thing earlier. I really don't need the extra memory cause of having a single monitor but down the road it will pay off. I still got a week to decide what im going to buy.

Mikerocks2112 i know exactly what you mean bud. Ive got burnt more than a few times buying different computer parts. Seems like ill buy what i need then within the next few days its goes on sale. Maybe this time around ill get lucky and the MSI lightning 3 GB will drop down to $400.00, lol yea ok......

I think the 3gb lightnings are going to be a limited production item given their price and recent history with the 6970 lightning being nearly impossible to find after the initial batches.

No point in going for a 3Gb version if OP is just running 1920x1200 as stated.
I would go for whichever has the warranty best suited for you, other than that go for whichever one is quietest.

My friend I found your card. :D Evga gtx570 with 2.5gb of memory for exactly your budget. 379$ AR

You can buy another in a few years for 200$ and still be good to go.

The cards are all pretty much trhe same unless you want to pay for a factory overclock and non-reference coolers. If you just want a standard card then get what ever is cheapest and offers the best warranty for the money.

Just got the ASUS ROG gtx580 Matrix.

Incredible card. Can't get it above 50c no matter how much I overclock it.

And I can burn the profile so I don't have to load oc every time.

Plus it has a reset switch in case I burn an oc that it can't handle.

I have 2 plain jane, vanilla EVGA GTX 580s (same as the original post, just the non-super clocked versions). I think I paid about 430 for them after rebate (which are approved but haven't arrived yet). I'm happy with them, I have absolutely no issues. I always buy EVGA due to the lifetime warranty and excellent customer service. Plus, they have an excellent forums over there and you can easily get questions answered.

Bullshit. if you read the fine print in PNY's warranty. It's only good for the product life cycle of that card model. EVGA still rocks.
From what I have heard they changed that.

Im leaning towards the ASUS ENGTX580 DCII/2DIS or the Matrix. Ive always liked Asus products and used their motherboards for every build. I had a Asus 5870 with the voltage tweak and it was a decent card, except for the smart doctor program, i hated using it.

If you're planning to sticking with 1920x1200 the 1.5GB should be "enough" for most games ( I have seen games reach 1.8GB on with all the bells and whistles enabled at 1920x1200 games like the witcher 2 and such). But if you plan on going to the 30 inch route you should look at the EVGA 3GB GTX 580.

EVGA GTX 580 is a very nice video card. EVGA replaced my dying GTX 280 FTW for free because of their excellent warranty.

Think ill go with the ASUS ENGTX580 DCII/2DIS. Was gonna go with the EVGA but i don't think ill have the card for over 3 years. When i see the next generation comes out, ill be upgrading again anyways. I cant wait to use a Nvidia card again, hopefully it will serve me well like the 6800 Ultra did. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, i really appreciate it. God bless you all. :)

Good Choice picking Asus over EVGA. You will love the card :D

Asus has always been good too me so im confident in my decision. Im sure a EVGA card would be good too but i like the cooling Asus has to offer. That card looks huge!

Damn dude, I didn't know you already own a HD 6950unlocked=6970. If you're tight on cash just hold on till December. The only reason I upgraded to this because I gave my nephew the 5850 and that Asus GTX 580 cost me around $400. No way in hell I would paid $500 for a GTX 580. If it was $500 for the HD 6990 or the GTX 590 I might. There might be something new coming out from AMD by the end of the year so price might drop tremendously. I mean HD 6970 is pretty good at 1920x1200. I would understand if your card was crappy and you couldn't play some games properly. But the 6950 unlocked is pretty good. I mean a 6950 or 6970CF would kick the living crap out of the GTX 580.
