I for one won't buy anything not on steam. I like the convienience of having all of my games in one spot.

I noticed this earlier on today and was wondering what happened... I did a search but couldn't find anything at the time. Let's read.

I don't care for Crysis 2, doesn't affect me, but if they wanna do that with the rest of their games, then good riddance, I won't buy BF3

So are they going to make their older games be forced to use Origin? If so they are really taking cues from Valve.

I care more about counting the kernels of corn in my crap than I do if EA sells crysis 2 only on origin or not.

The internet generation comes up the the stupidest things to care about.

Hmm... well that's the final nail in the coffin for me as far as buying Crysis 2. BF3 and ME3 will be much harder decisions, but I really like having all of my digital games from the same service. While I'm not surprised, it is disappointing.

Well, I guess they removed it from Steam due to EA launching their own digital download service, which only makes sense.

I don't think there are that many EA games on Steam as it is, and Crysis 2 was... well... Crysis 2, ha ha. No big loss there.

"Origin" is the name of EA's new service? I thought it was called something else? I cant remember...

Should everyone hate Valve and Blizzard as well? Their exclusivity policy so far is much more strict.

And youd have a point if 99% of the PC gaming community used and loved Origins. Everybody uses Steam so its not the same.

Except that what Valve started doing that Steam was a piece of shit. Steam wasn't always like it was today,

Still not a like comparison though, because while Steam was struggling there was absolutely no competition.

True, but there was a lot of complaining about Valve forcing people to use Steam back than.

This is true but I fear you have just provoked the Valve Defense Force.

I use Steam because it provides me with a service that is more than just "INSERT MONEY, USE BLOATED DOWNLOAD CLIENT." (Ok so it was that 8 years ago, but a lot has changed)

If EA wants to compete with Steam, the way to do it is with lower prices. That way consumers will go over to their stupid thing voluntarily. I bought Mass Effect 2 off EA's site because it was $10! Half the price it was on Steam. Doing it that way and letting consumers CHOOSE which site to use is the best way. Just stripping it off the utility we all use and 95% of my games are tied into and FORCING me to buy it from their site is BS.

I prefer to spread my money around to different services so one doesn't get a monopoly. I don't care how much people love Valve, letting them get total control over how people buy games on the PC would be very bad.

A good majority of my games on steam are from EA:

Crysis, Crysis Warhead
Dead Space, Dead Space 2
Bad Company 2
Mass Effect 1/2
Shank (lol)

What happens to BC2 if they pull it? Am I not able to play it anymore?

Yeah the more I think about this the more it pisses me off. I don't like publishers trying to strong-arm retailers here (even one as dominant as Valve in the digital market). And all of my digital games are on Steam. F em, I'm stubborn... I'm not going to buy any new game if it requires me to download another distribution client.

Who cares about crysis 2? It shouldn't have been sold in the first place.

They might be doing this temporarily as a "launch" to draw people into the service who can only get their linear POSFPS from one place and so willingly become customers. EA recently added some of their catalog to GoG, so I don't think that this is going to be a single source strategy.

Everyone is focusing on Crysis 2 (which isn't the point of this thread, perhaps I should have said that in the first post) but what it means for the future of the platform.

Well, you've a good point, at least with a couple of games, mainly BC2, which ties your key to your account, then your account to your email.

Because of that, if they pulled it, even if you bought a new retail copy, you wouldn't be able to use the same email with a different CD key to play with the same account. That would be fucked, to put it bluntly.

But, what can you do... it's their shit, they can do what they want, as unscrupulous and unfair as it might be. Bad business, but their choice. If it ends-up ripping people off, then I suppose people could "rise-up" and make a stink and see if it has an effect.

Mass Effect 1 & 2 I have on disc, and least that's something you could re-buy and just transfer saved games, though that would still be bullshit to have to re-spend the money on another copy.

Well, it is what it is...

I stick with D2D and Steam that way I can keep track of the games I've bought much more easily. I've rarely bought anything outside of those two except for Age of Empires 2 collection on GFWL.

If it is indeed true that EA is pulling games off Steam and most likely D2D next, it seems wholly unfair to the consumer to do this. It's too inconvenient keeping track of all these online distribution sites especially since I have multiple accounts and passwords for every online account I have.

It means for me to get BF3 and ME3 is going to be off Origin, and if I consider trying SWOTOR, Origin as well.

It means EA is going to push Origin with their own games. If people are fine with Valve doing it they should be fine with EA doing it. For those that only buy from Steam then I guess their stubbornness will simply cause them to miss out on some good games. Oh well.

Not sure when origin is coming out but I use EA download manager for my EA games and have had no issues with it, it's EXACTLY like steam, even has a community thing, friends list and all of that. I do have the games from EA download manager added on steam as unofficial games though, so if I wanted I could use steam with them.

Run EADM and it will update to Origin.

You bring a good point is that everyone is assuming at the moment it was a unilateral decision on EAs part to remove its products from Steam to make way for Origin exclusives. Yet these same products have are currently available on other Digital Distributors. Using BF3 for example, it has been available for preorder at DD sites for quite a while now, but never making an appearance on Steam.

Now at the same time you can't quite say that Valve is itself choosing not to list Origin games, since we do not know at this point if that is true either. But keep in mind Impulse, another DD, has specifically mentioned before that it will not feature Steamworks games as it helps promote a competing service. So it is not impossible that games delisting from Steam is Valve's decision, or a failure to reach an agreement on Valve/EAs part.

Also maybe even the reason is technical? Perhaps Steam cannot properly support the distribution of games that require a completely separate launcher like Origin? (GFWL is not quite the same).

One interesting thing to note is that you can't buy the BC2 Vietnam unlock code from Steam unless you own BC2 on Steam (and not elsewhere).

And youd have a point if 99% of the PC gaming community used and loved Origins. Everybody uses Steam so its not the same.

I'd like to know the research done for that figure.

Also assuming your figures are correct, what you are saying is that since Valve has made Steam into the dominant player in the market that they are somehow more ethically correct in using that position to stifle competition?

If Microsoft hypothetically integrated a distribution service into Windows 8, are saying it would be ethically fine for them to leverage the fact that everyone will have it somehow?

blizzard doesn't use an installed client so to speak. Neither does GoG.

I'm not sure why GOG was brought up, CDPR didn't make The Witcher 2 an exclusive? I actually bought it on there for various reasons, even though I could have had it cheaper at D2D.

So for you personally the issue then isn't that the game isn't on Steam? You'd be fine if games were say D2D exclusives (or any service with no client), even if there was no way to buy it on Steam? But you don't have or do you have an issue of Valve games being exclusive to a client required service? EA exclusives?

I prefer to spread my money around to different services so one doesn't get a monopoly. I don't care how much people love Valve, letting them get total control over how people buy games on the PC would be very bad.

If you look at the responses, it would seem like Steam already has too strong of an influence in the market. But at the end it'll depend on whether or not actual PC sales are significantly impacted for EA games that are not sold on Steam.

If there is any way to get it aside from Origin, I'm there.

The game is still being sold at other DD sites and will be at retail. This is actually true for the other games that have no been available on Steam either.

Interestingly enough, if BF3 is using Origin, than you can actually preorder the game for cheaper on D2D than you could have if it were available on Steam, but without worrying about community fragmentation do to differing third party clients.

I didn't care for the game anyways, but if EA has better deals on Origin, I'm going to buy games there.

It's a valid point. I draw a line because Valve is a developer while EA is a publisher, but it's a valid argument that since Valve doesn't sell their games on other services, why should EA.

Still, it's not a trend I want to support. If EA is successful with this then in a years time you'll have ten different digital distribution services to keep track of (one for every publisher). I'll still get ME3 and BF3 through retail as long as I don't need Origin to play em (more likely for ME3 than BF3).

Edit: And I'm for competition. EA should certainly start up a digital distribution service if they choose to... I just want to have the choice to get it on Steam. Others can get it on Origin or Impulse or D2D or retail if they so desire. The more choice the better.

Very good points, but I guess there's no real way to know for sure what the reason is/would be, until/unless EA and/or Valve made it clear to the public as to why the decision(s) was/were made.

Either way, I know nothing of Origin right now, and I'm perfectly content with Steam/Valve, so EA can do what ever they want.

As for BF3, I actually pre-ordered a hard copy of the game, the first I've done in a while, partly for the very reason that I knew it wasn't going to be available on Steam, and I'd rather not deal with another digital download service right now.

I side with the crowd that says fuck EA. I really did enjoy having all my stuff located on Steam, and have used Steam exclusively ever since I had my current gaming rig built. I will have to buy ME3 because I am so tied into it due to having so much fun with ME and ME2, but i'll just not buy any EA stuff or at least wait till a significant price drop before buying it on the EADM.

Why oh why in the HELL did EA have to buy Biostar :(

Biostar? I think you mean Bioware. Last I checked EA doesn't own a major motherboard manufacture.

Agreed. Shitty game is shitty. But it isn't fair to point fingers at EA when Blizzard and Valve have a stranglehold over the market like they do. If EA wants to have another online store open (this isn't the first for them) and move there own game over as an exclusive distro then by all means its fine to do so.

I would prefer competition to Steam and the like , we need it. I generally buy all my games off Steam but I'll certainly go where the price is right. Gaining vendors for digital distro is a good thing for us in the long run.

It is weird however to pull Crysis 2 at THIS point. The game has been out for months on steam , why not leave it there and continue to offer other download options. I would make future exclusives like BF3 on EA's service if they must draw attention to it.

doesnt bother me really, i use both. while id prefer them all on steam having some on origins wont kill me.

afterall they carried over my other EA download stuff which wasnt much, just the expansions/addons for BF2 and 2142.. so i already have my foot in the door with origins.

if they have preorder bonus's on origins for both BF3 and SWTOR ill have no issue getting them on origins vs buying them locally.
