Starcraft II

OK, whats this thing about Idra? I'm seeing a lot of people making references to Idra the past few days. Someone fill me in?

EDIT: I know who Idra is. I just want to know what happened the last few days that you guys apparently enjoyed.

IdrA opens MLG going undefeated... even going 2-0 against oGsMC in pool play. The two talked some smack (MC made some gesture at IdrA and IdrA responds with the middle finger). He then loses some terrible games against Thorzain (Thorzain said afterwards that he felt IdrA wasn't really trying), but finishes top in his pool so he's in the winner's bracket.

In the first round of the winner's bracket against MMA (T), IdrA taps out after winning a battle and taking the advantage. Everyone had to check the screen twice to make sure who actually gg'd ... and it was indeed IdrA. Day9 and DJWheat were speechless, they went back through the replay to see why IdrA gg'd out. MMA even asked IdrA "why leave?". This wasn't the firs time IdrA's done that in a tournament either. The next game, MMA puts early marine pressure on IdrA and IdrA gg's out in quick IdrA fashion.

So now he's in the losers bracket where he... *drumroll* faces MC for the 2nd time. But he starts with a 2-0 advantage (best of 7). Some more smack is talked (IdrA saying "2-0" with MC's response being "4-0"). IdrA loses TWO games when he tries to do a zergling / roach aggressive push against MC's fast expand while MC makes void rays. This SAME IDENTICAL scenario happened with MC vs. Moon. It was just mind boggling that IdrA would lose TWO games identically like this. Moreover, IdrA's style is not early aggression. IdrA then loses another game after MC builds a pylon wall separating main and expansion with some cannons. IdrA simply gg's out. So now he's down 3-2 (MC won 3 in a row). Last game... IdrA finally decides to go straight up and macros but loses the game eventually against MC.

Basically, IdrA vs. MMA and IdrA vs. MC was poorly executed enraged gracken mode games. It was *facepalm* worthy.

When Idra's on, he's the most electrifying man in e-sports. When he goes into this pitiful self destruction mode, it's painful to watch.

You could have heard a pin drop when he GG'ed out of the first game with MMA.

He's only the most electrifying when he rages out. He's a great player and his macro (unmatched by most) is fun to watch, but I think he's actually held back by his inability to keep that rage in check.

He made a huge ass of himself a few weeks back on SOTG as well.

He's clearly held back by the rage, which is probably symptomatic of insecurity or self confidence issues.

That anger could be a poweful motivator, but only if he learns to channel it instead of being controlled by it.

You can tell when he's playing in enraged gracken mode if you watch his ladder stream. A week or two ago, he was playing a ton of ROOT players (they all started queing knowing he was I guess). He beat all their Z's in ZvZ but kept losing to minigun in ZvP over and over and over... shit talking ensued and every successive game against minigun got worse and worse. IdrA tried doing random all in strats (much like the roach ling timing against MC) and just got rolled.

I don't know why but I love watching his stream when that happens to him. Especially since he just keeps right on going even though he's obviously getting trolled hard. At that point his best option is to just stop playing, but that enraged gracken mode wins out and makes him look foolish.

Man I would have loved to have been on the ROOT TeamSpeak/Ventrilo/whateverchatsoftware server that day. It had to be a laugh a minute.

I'm brand new to SC2 and downloading it still. About an hour left. Does anyone have any replays from youtube or some reasonably-easy 'dont have to sign up for account' type website they'd recommend for an intro-player? I played SC1 for probably 3000+ hours so I hope I won't be completely newbish as I understand the basic micro, macro, rushing/zerging strategies, camping, drop ship attacks, ships in minerals, etc etc. All the cheap stuff :) that sometimes works lol.

While Idra's rage is easy to make fun of, I think it reveals that his bottleneck right now is his composure and when he figures that out (and he's made tons of progress in the last few months) I think his game is going to get to the highest levels.

Idra still sticks to some arbitrary personal standards, which is quite unusual in such a competitive environment. He wants his victories to be solid and decisive. To him, anything less than that is probably attributed to poor performance on his part (causing him to lose) or his opponent's part (causing him to win a game he should have lost).

Anyone with some interest in Idra's perspective on the MLG games might be interested in listening to Inside the Game. It's one of djWheat's shows that's dedicated completely to SC2, and in the episode from earlier this week he and Incontrol talk to Idra about MLG and the MMA/MC matches specifically.

He actually explains the thought process that led him to leave, but then does eventually just come right out and say that yes, in that first game against MMA he was indeed winning and no he shouldn't have left. So he is at least able to look back on it and say "Yep, I messed up" which is more than some other players will probably admit, and it does at least give some hope that at some point he might take care of his problems.

They have plenty of pro replays and you don't have to sign up.

As for Idra, it's just a bad idea to leave games unless you are 100% sure you're in a losing position. However, his antics are amusing and I can relate seeing as how I probably have more rage than he does.

Haha no gg. Man I thought boxer was past his prime, but he still shows his potential. Good to know that he's not down for the count, and his team has been doing well too.

I have a random question: How do you pronounce "Protoss"?

Do you pronounce it as:

pro-toss (pro as in professional, toss as in "Hey, toss me that thing")
or
pra-toss (pra as in prado or prat)

it's either pro-toss, prodoss, or bro-toss. no one says pra idk where that's coming from.

Not sure about the NASL but Dreamhack you can see all it on Day9's Blip.tv account. I'm at work so I don't have the URL handy.

it's day9tv.blip.tv and/or blip.tv/day9tv, but it's a pain to search through. try to find the games that mc co-casted with tb for some amusing commentary, it's amazing how much he can say in such few words XD.

He has his new site up and running at simply day9.tv It's very easy to navigate and works well!

Hmm. I just got playing some 2v2s with a friend and tonight wasn't so great (we went 1-3) but I noticed something odd. On our last loss, we lost no points. I know this can happen if you're at the bottom of your division, but we're at the top of our gold division right now. Does that mean anything or is it just a glitch in the system?

It has nothing to do with your division. You can play people in other divisions. Just check who your opponents were.

Yeah I know we can play people in other divisions depending on how well we're doing, but it was a weird night. We do fairly well against Gold teams, and can hold our own versus plat and diamond teams. In our first match (which we won) we got placed against a Silver team. The next match we lost against a Platinum team. After that we got matched up against what I think was another Platinum team, though one player was on multiple Masters league teams (2v2, 3v3, 4v4). And that last match was against another Gold team, though I think their skill level is higher than Gold.

Ehh, whatever. I'd say we're doing reasonably well with more wins than losses. Though I wish there was an easier way to gauge how you're doing against others in the league or how close to a possible promotion you might be.

Btw... just logged on and B.net says there may be an issue with some wins / losses not rewarding or taking away points.

As for seeing how you're doing... just look at who you're playing against and if the vast majority of them are in a division above you and you're winning, then expect promotion. Fact is, the game uses your MMR to match you... so who you match against is the best indication of where your MMR is.

IdrA definitely needs to shut his yap after Huk's performance at GSL today.
Cue typical idra response when it comes to Protoss: "race is OP, only reason they win".

What bugs me most is how zergs on ladder take everything he says to be the word of God. Like messaging me after I win, giving me shit for: being so far behind and only winning because of my race. Please , my win-loss to Z is probably 50-50.

MMR will match you up with a player that has equal chance to win against you. So you could have far less skill but still be an equal level opponent.

It makes it so you should be around 50% win/loss until you get into high grand masters. BUT you should be doing considerably better than 50/50 versus zerg and the other races should be a bit lower than 50%. You should look at your PvZ strat.

A noobs win/loss ratio versus zerg really has no effect on whether things are balanced. You are matched versus people who have an equal chance of winning not an equal skill level. Start going to tournaments and wonder why things end up like homestory or GSL with race imbalance.

And you COULD still 4-gate/ 6-gate your way to masters if you are toss with very little micro of game knowledge. Almost any one can play toss at the masters level.

Idra had a point back in the day when huk was first coming up. But huk has been practicing crazy and has gotten a lot better. His old style of play is why idra things he isn't up to par with the koreans. He still does builds that won't get him any idra respect. But a lot of them aren't risky they are just abusing great units.

4gates arent as almighty as complainers seem to make it out to be. The recent 20 second nerf to warpgate severely hurts the 4 gate. 4gate is also most effective in a PvP. I'd hardly say theres any huge imbalances. I may be reading this wrong but your post seems to say that a protoss is imba against a zerg which i strongly disagree with.
