Case: Silverstone SG05, 450w version = I've used the SG05 in a previous build. I like the lay out and the size so I'm going to go with it again on this build. I will be flipping the power supply upside-down though for better airflow and so the braid of cables can run along the support beam.

MB: ASRock H67M-ITX = I'm an ASRock fanboy. I've had nothing but great experiences with ASRock boards. The system in my sig took only a very minor voltage bump to hit 4.0ghz and I've never had a single problem with it.

CPU: Intel i5-2400 = Yup the non-k version. It's on a H67 board so didn't see the point in the K series. Once I build a mini-ITX system I NEVER want to take it back apart! (I go slightly over the top on cable management and it's a pain to disassemble a system I've built with 50 billion zippy ties and custom length cords!) If someone does come out with a P67 mini-ITX board I'll just sell this system on CL like I always do and build a new one.

Heatsink: Intel OEM = This part scares me, but I'm not overclocking and I've read good things about the default heatsink. Plus with the layout on this board it was either the default one or a $65 + shipping AXP-140 which seemed like a complete waste of money for a stock CPU.

Memory: 8gb (2 x 4gb) of GSkill DDR3-1600 = It was on sale at the Egg.

Video: eVGA GTX 560 TI = Lifetime warranty + 30 MIR + free 3DMark11 license.

Hard Drive: WD's new 500gb Scorpio Black = Rolling the dice here. It's 7200rpm, 16mb cache, but it's also brand new on the market so I hope it doesn't pull an Intel.

Optical Drive: Samsung Slim DVDRW = I didn't forget the mini-sata to sata adaptor!

Everything should be here by Friday. I'll post pics of the build like I always do.

Why would the stock oem heatsink scare you? Temperatures only really creep up if you're running prime95 or some sort of stress test and even then I doubt it'll reach the max temp specification. Looking forward to pics, I'm mulling over setting up a mini-ITX mini-file server so this might give me some ideas :).

Why would the stock oem heatsink scare you?

I've just never NOT used an after-market heatsink. I've been doing this since the thunder chicken days so that's a long time without using a factory OEM heatsink. Sometimes I kinda miss my old Volcano 7 from back in the day, but I would be deaf by now if I was still using it :)

The stock heatsink works just fine for stock and minor overclocks. The only downside, it is noisy compared to a cooler using a 120mm fan.

Okay so I'm sure I'm going to catch wife agro for this, but I'd rather ask for forgiveness than permission.

I just called NewEgg and swapped the GTX 460 for a factory overclocked EVGA GTX 560 TI with lifetime warranty :)

90% certain the power supply will handle it lol.

Looks good. I had the same worries about the Intel heatsink but at least with the Asus itx board I can undervolt the CPU. I saw a 6-8C drop at load.

Please post if you have any buzzing or beeping/chirping sounds from that PSU. I'm contemplating the EXACT same build for a friend.

It should handle it, but word of the warning...the ST45SF can produce chirping above 300W loads. However, given the power efficiency of sandybridge you should be fine. I barely broke the 300W barrier with an i7 860 and MSI gtx 560 at stock so your system should be fine.

Chirping eh? Well that's a new one. After I get it loaded up I'll fire up the Crysis benchmark and see if it chips :)

I've had a few days to think my build over so far, and an option that came to mind was the Silverstone SG05 450w. It has a smaller footprint and people have noted that it was easier to build in this case compared to the Q08. I will also save a fair bit of money not needing to invest in another power supply since the SG05 comes with one.

I'm weary of a few things for this case and one is the chirping issue. I hope others can report whether they've experienced it or not. I hope to make a purchase by tonight, and the build will be awfully similar to yours.

i5 2500 (I might go for i7 2600)
SG05
Asrock/Gigabyte itx h67 board
8gb Gskill ram
1TB WD caviar black + 60gb Vertex 2 SSD
Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB version

I hope I'm not pushing the limits of the 450watts, especially if I choose the i7 2600 route with this GPU.

I see. So it appears SB's efficiency *might* save me from the chirping issue. It's a big gamble =(

You are definitely not pushing a 450W PSU with that build. Assuming that the 2600 is going all out, it could pull up to 95W. That's very conservative as Anandtech only registered 86W on his torture test for the 2600. A GTX460 going all out can pull 150-160W. Toss in maybe another 20W for hard drives, memory, etc. (and that number is probably too large) and we end up around 275W total. If a person went with a GTX560i you would probably need to add about 30W on to the equation.

Well yall got me paranoid so I did a bunch of reading. After reading half a dozen or so GTX 560 TI reviews I think the bard itself under load will pull around 190w. After my single case fan, i5-2400, a laptop hard drive, and a slim dvdrw I think I'll be just under the 300w limit at load.

Hopefully I'll get one of the good 450w power supplies so it won't matter :)

I got everything assembled and Windows loaded, drivers updated, and a few select games installed. Crysis won't be installed until tomorrow (waiting on the steam download) so no serious benchmarks until then. I'm also waiting on eVGA to send me my 3DMark11 code.

When running the standard free test on 3DMark11 I heard no chirping from the power supply on any of the tests.

So I ran the Crysis benchmark this morning. 1920x1080 resolution, Very High, 8AA.. pulled about 37.88fps which is pretty decent for a mini-ITX system.

No "chirping" from the power supply yet either :)

Looks nice Sheeps. Also, I didn't know you were with the [H]orde as well. LanLordz FTW!

Yup been here a while now. I think at least some of my guild will be at the next LanLordz. I should be there too with my new build.

How loud is the computer? As previously said, I'm planning something exactly like this for a friend, and his main concern (since the case would be on his desk) is how loud it would be. Especially since his desk is next to his bed.

stock fan is likely loudest component. I have a friend with a CM690II case with several added fans (antec tricools on min setting), and the stock cooler (i5 2500k) stands out a wee bit above the GTX570 fan at idle, and all the CM fans :(

I used an aftermarket 120mm for the front intake so I can't speak for the default 120mm front fan the SG05 came with, but honestly I don't know how loud it is. However loud it is cannot be heard from 3 feet away with the ceiling fan and my wife's computer running behind me.

the stock SG05/06 fan is slightly louder than A GT AP13, but pushes much less air...

How is the 2.5 drive doing? I am looking at possibly using 2x of those in RAID0 instead of a single SSD for my upcoming MITX build. Have you had any issues with micro-stutter or stuttering in general? How noisy is the drive?

I can run a few benchmarks on it tomorrow night and post them. It runs like a platter hard drive to me. It's not crazy fast, but it's not slow either.. it's normal platter speed. It's ultra quiet, can't hear it over the front intake fan at least.

Trying to find a way to purchase a 80+ GB SSD without the wife knowing to use as a boot drive :)

Hello. I want to make a similar build, I am still pending between the 300 and the 450 watt PSU, due the infamous "chirping" problems.
CPU: i5 2500 (slightly better then yours)
MB: the same
VGA: MSI GTX 560ti
HDD: I would like to use the current 3,5" drive that i own and an additional HDD from a laptop (slight more power needed)

Could you post some more stress tests, push it and see if it chirps?
Also would like some input on your temperatures and how hot does the case feel after intensive use.
Thank you.

Not all the 450w psu chirp over 300w. Some do and some don't. If it does Silverstone will replace it. No one knows for sure how many of the units are bad because Silverstone won't release that info. I'm thinking the worse odds are 50-50. Of course I don't know because Silverstone won't tell us but if it was worse than that all the professional reviewers wouldn't have given it a thumbs up I'm thinking. We'd have heard of a lot more complaints but we have heard enough of them from those around the net to know some are definitely bad. So I figure best guess, or in this case is worse odds, is 50-50. I just wanted to point that out.

Sorry had a lot going on this weekend and got no benchmarking done and only a bit of gaming in. I've been meaning to OC the vid card. I'll see if a voltage bump on it will cause any chirping. I've ran the crysis benchmark and the 3dMark11 (full version comes free with EVGA cards) benchmark with no chirping or stuttering. I'm pretty certain I'm under the 300w cap though. Sandybridge + 560TI + laptop hard drive + slim dvd+ stock cooler + 120mm fan prolly doesn't quite break 300w, even under load.

When you can, please stress test a bit the little shoebox. I am very interested in some temps. CPU, GPU, MB chipset and HDD.
Also would be nice to know how hot does the case feel during these tests.

There is no rush since I will start purchasing things for my build in a month. (got some very little hope for Bulldozer).

Okay so after firing up Prime95 and Crysis I got the chirping, although it sounds more like clicking to me.

Running either one of these products separately doesn't cause the chirping. Running 3DMark11 also doesn't cause the chirping. So unless I was trying to find a prime number while gaming I don't see this as being an issue.

Temps were good, well decent at least for the stock cooler. With Prime95 and Crysis going it only spiked out at 67C and the MB temp stayed around 37C if you believe the ASRock utility.

Pic below but I shrank it too much and it's kinda hard to read:

hmm...sad that it chirps...but hell I guess i'm gonna gamble with silverstone and order the case with 300W PSU.
Worst case, I end up selling it abit cheaper and buy LianLi PCQ08B

I have been following this for a while now and did released info about ST45SF's return rate back in March in another thread:
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1036928033&postcount=9

The return rate is still low and our tech support in Taiwan has not received e-mails about it since then. Statistically, the ST45SF is performing very well.

Sorry for posting in your thread 1legged_sheep but the info i ask may help others if provided so i see no reason to pm Tony Ou for this.

Ok. I see you are a silverstone rep, help me out abit then.
I live in Romania, and I can only find SG05 /w 300PSU here. I could order the 450W from e-bay germany no problem. Shipping is only 10euros so no biggie. But in case it chirps, i have to send it back in germany i suppose, and that I do not like.
Not to mention...describing the issue. Nvidia recommends a minimum 500W PSU for 560Ti so basically the seller could "wash his hands" on the matter.
Yes the SG05 /w 450W PSU is nicer because it's black painted inside. (no big deal i guess, a can of paint spray can fix things).

Now with the risk of being redundant, some people in this forum said that the 300W PSU could handle a 560ti and an i5 2500. I also found a site that sells a pre-assembled system with the same specs /w the 300W PSU. http://www.extremeware.de/product_info.php?products_id=88&XTCsid=007bf1b47b07ef58283736a1249b38b9

But since you are a rep, what is your opinion on this?

LE:
Just recieved a response e-mail from extremeware.de and it seems that the 300W PSU is enough.
Dear Cristian,

thank you for your interest in our products.
I try to answer your question shortly.

· Warranty
o We offer a warranty of two years. In case of a warranty claim it is necessary to send the computer or the damaged component back to us. But I can relive you, such problems with warranty are very unusual.
· Overheat
o We choose the proper case for the offered components. One strength is the very good ventilation with a big case cooler. That allows that configuration.
o http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Cases-...ni-ITX-Case-Review/Final-Thoughts-and-Conclus

· Power consumption and overheating
o The 80+ certified 300W power supply in combination with the good cooling concept allows to use the offered components also in harder using.

If you with another components like a bigger hard drive or an blu-ray drive please feel free to contact us.

With kind regards and greetings to Romania

Uwe
