id's Rage discussion

I really wish iD could make a comeback to their glory days. It just feels like they're way too focused on pretty and not really giving a crap about substance.

This is honestly the first I have seen of Rage, it looks incredible, but everything I seen in there I went "Hrrm, looks like Borderlands...hrrm that also, hrrrm that too".

Now sure, you can only have so much deviation in a post apocalyptic society but everything felt and looked spot on with Borderlands entire backdrop.

Bleh, release is still 8 months away. I will buy it if it's not a disappointment.

I read something the other day, from an interview to some Bethesda guy, that a demo for Rage is highly unlikely.
But, at least for me, that's not surprising. This type of sandbox game rarely has a demo.

Not really sure how you can say there isn't subtance, when you haven't play the game...
Plus, all games share many similar aspects. Rage isn't different. What matters is gameplay and that is yet to be seen. id is the master of FPS and I have confidence that they won't disappoint. As far as I'm concerned, they haven't this far :)

Thought I was watching a Fallout 3 trailer for a moment. I agree about the Borderlands comparison, this idea has been done to some degree...but then again, in the video game world, what idea hasn't been rehashed and reworked. I will still be picking this game up day of, appreciate the work of the devs involved in the past so I will continue to support them until dissapointed.

I was actually pretty disappointed by these screenshots. the textures are low-resolution, there seems to be very little normal mapping, and the environments and models look low-poly. Hopefully the final game ends up looking better, or at the very least, I hope it runs well on current hardware.

I'm in agreeance with you. These latest batch of screens are the last impressive thing I've seen out of the game yet.

Well those could be 360 screenshots for all we know. I saw the shot bigger, they were in like 1054x640, witch is a commun Xbox 360 resolution right now...

The 360 version will have lower res texture due to limited 7gig storage on disc (and the fact that ID don't want to make 2 disc version because of extra game fee)

I saw them at 2560x1600. They were definitely rendered on a PC. Whether or not they were using 360 assets is something I don't know, but I don't see why they would do that since these are promotional shots (and they are already rendered at a high resolution to increase the IQ).

And where did you see those screens at 2560x1600 ? Screenshots of that resolution aren't even at the official Rage site...

I keep reading this, but wasn't Rage in development well before Borderlands?

Isn't this kind of like Stanley Kubrick getting crap for Full Metal Jacket seemingly coming out on the heels of Platoon, when FMJ was being developed first, but Kubrick being Kubrick took his time to get it done his way before releasing it?

Eh, Rage is just a tech demo for the new engine probably anyway...

ID should just stick to the technology aspect of gaming and leave the games to other companies.

Pretty much after Quake 3, they haven't made a great game but they keep making great engines.

id is nothing more than a middleware company that holds itself back trying to do content. The new owners should shitcan the entire staff except Carmack and keep him developing the tech and let some folks that know how to make games use it. Doom. We have played it enough goddammit! Rage? Are you kidding me? id's ability to not get shit done for years has pissed me off finally. Fuck'em.

well, if they ever lose Carmack, they'll either die off or they'll have to hope to god they can get some awesome talent to make an amazing game.

Honestly, Carmack is ID, without him, there isn't an ID.

FTFY. I agree that those are more than likely console shots as well judging by the resolution. Hopefully id won't falter to the current trend of "make for console then lazily port to PC." If not then I'll gladly buy it day one.

Rage looks awesome. I'm surprised they were also able to fit it onto the iPhone and make it look so damn good.

And they really haven't done anything great in the last ten years, except maybe RTCW.

id didn't really do much on RTCW. They're credited on the box, but all the work was done by Gray Matter(single-player) and Splash Damage(multi-player). The last great game put out by id was Quake 3, and the last decent game was Doom 3. Hopefully they can reclaim the old magic with Rage and become relevant once more.

I found Doom 3 pretty average. I think Kyle nailed it on the head , Id is great with technology but pretty crappy with games now.

I'm still hoping Rage will be something more than average but so far its not looking like it.

Like SicClown posted, Gray Matter prolly had more to do with how well RTCW came out than iD did.
Bethesda is involved in Rage now as well, how much I don't know. It does looks like a cross between FO3 and Borderlands, but I liked FO3 and Borderlands, so I am not so sure that is a bad thing at all. The game is 8 months out. I intend to give it a chance if the price is right, or just wait for a Steam sale to get the price right.

I would argue that Q3 was not a "great" game as shipped either. It was the community and the mods that made Q3 great imo. As it shipped on launch day, it was just a decent game imho. Who still played vanilla Q3 a year after launch?

I think you guys have a skewed view of history. Quake 3 was one of the most played games online years after it was released and a lot of that was the vanilla version. I know because I always liked to look up stats on gamespot. I personally only played rocket arena though. There's quite a few people playing quakelive today which is pretty much the same game.

id hasn't made a decent game since doom3 some of you said. How about id hasn't made a game since doom3, which when it came out I thought it was pretty good, although definitely not one of the best games I've ever played.

I do agree they need a better business model, it's kind of interesting how valve has surpassed them by such a large margin comparatively.

You should read up about the Rage engine. What you just stated basically shows you don't know anything about what the Rage engine is trying to do. The rage engine is an entirely real-time scalable engine with real-time rescaling of textures, polygons, etc. It is suppose to be the solution to 'make for consoles, crappy port to pc'-itis.

The idea being you make 1 game with an ultra-high detailed model. We'll say a 50MB model if your main character. In real-time, the game will scale that 50MB model with extreme detail down to what YOUR system is capable of running it at. IE if its an xbox 360, it'll render it down to maybe 0.5MB for a 1056x560 resolution...

If its a mid-range PC, it might scale down the texture to 3MB for medium detail and increase the polygon count.

If its a high-end PC, it might scale down the texture to 10MB and keep the polygon counts pretty close to where the model was originally made by the artist in 3dmax or what-not.

If its an ultra-high-end PC /w triple SLI or quad crossfire, blah blah...or..if your replaying the game on a pc in 5-10 years down the road on a mid-range machine, the game will use the full 50MB model with all polygons available. So the cool part is, you can potentially replay games 5 years down the road and they look substantially better than they did when you were originally playing them.

The point being that now artists don't have to worry about the 'medium' and scaling back their models to be less than ___ KB and can concentrate more on the art. The engine handling all the scaling. The artist just needs to make 1 copy. The best looking game possible with the tools available for the highest-performing platform(PC, obviously :p) and the same pc source files(theoretically, minus dvd-storage limitations, etc) to play the game on a ps3, xbox 360, wii or cellphone(Yes, Rage3D has been shown running on an iPhone 4) with the engine handling all the appropriate scaling. Theoritically, they could also design the models for the PC of 10 years from now and each year the game looks better and better as new hardware is released.

Can you imagine a Starcraft 1 that's graphics never became dated? The only way they'd get you to buy Starcraft 2 would be .... innovation? or new content? Oh how awful it would be if the game industry started to be more innovative, ambitious and games less-reused old art/content.

Nerve did the RTCW mp and SD did Wolf:ET

I loved Q3 since release. Mods did help it, but the vanilla release was a great online shooter. I got the id pack on Steam a while ago and played vanilla Q3 and had no problem finding a game, so it's still liked.

I have been following Rage for sometime now & I am excited about the game. I have a really good feeling the Graphics are going to kick some royal ass. I just hope the gameplay is Rock solid. So far from what ive seen I cant complain at all.

+1

Really looking forward to this, screen shots look good and it's id, I expect nothing but the best from them!

And how do you figure that at this point ? Have you played the game ?

If it wasn't for ID being attached to it I don't think we'd even be having a thread about this game.

It can look average without playing it. Do you really expect something more than average in the game play dept from iD at this point?

"Look" average ? I really don't understand that concept, when gameplay certainly cannot be evaluated by screenshots and/or trailers.

And what point is this ? I have yet to play a game from id that wasn't good or very good, so yes, I am waiting for a good game in Rage. Don't assume for a minute that because you didn't like games like Doom 3, no one else did either.

And what exactly is wrong with that ?

Many titles carry the weight of a specific developer and/or franchise. Why would a totally new game (not a sequel) not have the name of a heavyweight in this industry, as its driving force ?

Still don't see where there are 2560x1600 shots?
Step 1: Click on the link.
Step 2: Click on a thumbnail to go to the picture gallery.
Step 3: Click on the button below the screenshot that says "Go Full Size (2560x1600)".
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!

Being that it's ID, nothing really. I 've always enjoyed their games, even Doom 3. But beyond a few pretty screenshots and Megatexture tech (or whatever it's called), I don't know much about it except that it looks like Borderlands.
