Dead Space 2 - thoughts, opinions?

grr the in game vsync still caps you at half refresh rate just like the first one.

this game has the WORST color banding I have ever seen. only if I turn the brightness down to nearly pitch black is it somewhat bearable. the first Dead Space did not do this except for a little around some bright lights and smoke. in Dead Space 2 though it is on many of the walls and doors and is even flickering a bit in some spots. I can take screenshots but it wont show up as much as in the actual game. honestly it is a so annoying that I have almost lost interest in continuing in the game. :(

Wow, I think that Dead Space 2 looks fantastic.

This post is really surprising to me. So far I've been gobsmacked by every area I've entered. Just goes to show that there's no accounting for taste.

I've got it downloading now on Steam... I'll report on it tonight. :D

the atmosphere is great and most textures are greatly improved from the first game. again its just some horrible color banding that is ruining the visuals. its almost 8 bit color looking in some spots and others its just obvious bands around brighter areas. I will try and post some pics and vids later.

I'll get it when it hits the $20-25 mark, likely later this year.

I'm tempted to pick it up now, but got plenty to play already. I'll hang off until it's 5 quid on the Steam Xmas sale!

What an awesome game. I think it's better than part 1 across the boards.

I need to finish the original. I'm like 11 hours in and what seems to be the very end of the game. Though I dont think my savefile backed up properly. doh. :(

I'm not even sure how that's supposed to work and when the game even detects your save file or if you have to do something or what.

stop smoking crack or get a new monitor or get your eyes checked?!?@

Seriously though the game is much much better than the first one. The graphics are a big improvement and there are no bugs i have experienced yet. The game is a total upgrade and is fantastic. This is a definate buy.

I just hooked up my crt and its still a problem on there. its much less apparent than on the lcd but still obvious none the less. I think you guys have to blind as a bat not to see it.

Careful, on PC there is a bug where occasionally the menu at the save stations will not come up an you have to restart the game to fix it. Hopefully it will get fixed soon as no one likes losing all progress since there last save due to a game bug.

Dead Space is a hallmark of the Survival Horror genre and an all around great experience with very little drawback.

Dead Space is NOT a survival horror game. Just look at the video 0:30 and never ending waves of monsters that die from one shot. Oooh scary.

Call it an action-game because that's what it is. With that said I am waiting to pick this up as I enjoyed the first game.

Great (but hard) beginning. I'm about an hour and some in and I love it. Had to stop cuz I got scurrrrd.

Goin back in tonight!

I beg to differ. It scares me in places. On a couple of occasions I've found myself doing that gasp thing you do when something has just startled you... of course, it's kind of funny when it happens.

This game really kicks ass with 3D Vision, some quirks with the menus but overall looks to be a great 3D title. And I agree with Wabe, it's can be VERY scary in places. Combined with 3D it's does a very good job or creating fear and tension.

There is a difference between a scary game and a survival horror. If you do not realize that then well I feel for you.
Dead Space falls in the same category as Resident Evil 5. I'm not saying the games can't be scary, but lacks the aspect of survival or running for your life. In the first game even the enemies dropped ammo or healthpacks, what the hell is that?

I mean you're downright slaughtering anything that comes your way except a few boss fights.

its certainly more action horror than survival horror. the higher difficulty settings though require a lot more thinking and planning or you will quickly be out of ammo and health.

Does anyone know a site that gives you a rundown of the story of the first one?

I had it for PS3 but lost my save and I don't fancy playing through it again tbh.

Got Dead Space 2 downloaded from Steam ready to go for tomorrow.

I bought it for the 360, because I didn't want to have to deal with any of the problems the first dead space PC version had. Anyways, it still looks and plays great on the xbox. I beat it in just a little over 12 hours, and I was taking my dear sweet time going through it. I was hoping it would be a little longer, but I believe that's about how long the first one took me to beat as well. I wasn't impressed at all with any of the new weapons, I ended up playing with the exact same ones I used the first game. So, that was a bit of a bummer. Overall though, I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first one. It certainly didn't feel as scary as the original, but maybe that's just because I knew what to expect this time around.

it does piss me off that they have the nerve to charge 60 bucks for pc version and then on release day announce that DLC will be for consoles only. there is no reason other than greed to charge 60 bucks for a version of a game that will have no licensing fees like on the consoles. console versions even got access to Dead Space Ignition and PS3 got Extraction. not even giving us the option for more single player DLC is a slap in the face.

I read it. Thanks!

SPOILER ALERT:

That does make sense.

So the red marker, the man made one, was actually an inhibitor, placed on the planet to contain the spread of the alien life form after the scientists, who were studying the life form, contaminated themselves and the planet. The black marker on earth was serving the same purpose.

Hmm, but one thing I don't quite get - why was that woman who betrayed Isaac taking the marker away? Was she a Unitoligist? That science officer guy who got killed near the end of the story wanted the red marker returned to the planet, because he realized it was a man made inhibitor. Surely the female, if she had been working for the government, would have wanted that too? But, no, she was taking it away?

Wait a minute, you paid thirty dollars for this, and got a great deal.

Would you say that the marker situation has been cleared up? If we finish this will we have a better understanding of what the markers are for, and who wants control of them and why?

LOL at all the discussion of the missing DLC - the marker thing is far more interesting than some ridiculous side quest that has nothing to do with what the game is actually about.

I just started playing this myself. Working great at 8050x1600 with every in game option maxed out. I wish it supported higher levels of AA but otherwise it's solid. The V-Sync problem still seems to be present as it defaulted to being on and the menus were terrible to navigate by mouse. Once disabled the problem cleared right up. Just like it did with the original. As for the game play, the game makes far better use of lighting, fog etc. It's got even better atmosphere and generally feels like it's better polished. At it's core though, it's a direct sequel to the previous game.

surely you did not miss my point. just because I bought for 30 bucks doesn't change the fact that it is the same price as the console version and will have none of the achievements or dlc.

Yeah, but you having spent thirty dollars, instead of sixty, should alleviate your, um, degree of pissed-off-ness. Or are you pissed off for others? That's noble. Me, I would've taken the thirty dollar deal and said, so long, suckers.

Good game, I def recommend it if you enjoy FPS games and are lacking some game time with the lack of shooters lately

most of the the textures are way better looking but I get horrific color banding in some spots. I gave up on playing it on my lcd because of the backlight bleed ruining this game but most of the color banding is still there on the crt too.

well I am still pissed off because there will not be any single player DLC for the pc version. and please read that link I added.
