Network pics thread

first try at omnigraffle. I finally picked up some cisco gear from a buddy so I have been tinkering around for a while today.

I have to post a clean pic of the desk area too since it is only messy when I am playing with stuff ;)

Looks clean and nice, a little bit messy = technician :)

Might want to photo shop your socks out of the picture tho LOL :)

Those wires were bugging the heck out of me. I had to pull out a little velcro

I have one of those saved in my shopping "wish list".
Once they've been up and running for a bit please post a review.

I recently rolled out a bunch of new HP msm310's, maybe should have looked at those, $160 is cheap.

Do these actually help out? I would suppose they do but I've never used anything like that, just used stock. What kind of benefit would I get if I did buy those?

Ive got a set of these on an old Linksys wrt54g and its signal is noticibly stronger than the newer Linksys router that sits right next to it. Don't know how well they'll work on these HP AP's though. I'd suspect they'd have a similar effect but don't know how good the originals are.

Got bored this weekend,

3 lcd's.

then i tackled my server, since im having a baby in a week or so i have to watch some of my spending, so i took my current virtual server.

White box :

P1040152.JPG

Older asus board with a core 2 duo 3.0 dual core, with 4 gigs ddr2 memory 1 340gig sata drive for windows 2008r2 server, and software raided ( built into windows 2008r2 server) 2 x 500gig hdd's.

It's currently just a toy box till i get my pbx server running more and more money to get my actual intel board with a xeon processor.

Pic's of the old stuff into the new box for now, MAN these hard drives stay way cooler :)

Norco RPC-470 case it's actually not that loud, and the 5 fan's in the middle are actually decently quiet. i have a larger fan in the front pushing air over the 3 hard drives and 5 smaller ons in the middle, case moves air FOR SURE!

What's the purpose of a home lab besides bragging rights and a pretty light show?

Im going back to school to get CISCO certified and also work on my MCSE cert.

I will make one server a FTP server.

For me the home lab is a great distraction from everyday life. Similar to how some people are with video games. Even though I work on Cisco gear every day for a living it is nice to sit down with a glass of Jameson and just tinker. Plus its far more productive than watching TV or playing video games :)

Practice lab for certification exams, to pre-stage or test changes for work, or to simply play with in my case.

My work network is the core of a critical federal datacenter which I can't take even the slightest risk with. So, it's handy to have a rather extensive lab at home to test the occasional change on. It's a lot faster than opening up tickets and going through the entire change management approval process to test a couple commands out.

Generally I just use it to practice for certs though. A lot of the networks pictured in here aren't even cabled, those would fall under the "pretty light show" or "bragging rights" category depending on if they are powered up or not.

for me, learning and cert practice and proof of concept. i shut it off when im not using it to save electricity and money in the end, i dont use mine as much as id like now, but i plan to start studying for ccie later this year so it will get much more use then.

Gives you the l33t skills to wok in a production environment by getting some light or heavy experience and helps you understand the fundamentals of supporting or running it. :)

Working in the I.T. field has drilled home one fact. That ANYBODY can cram for, and pass a certification test. And then not know JACK SHIT about their job. Building a lab helps you put it into practace and helps you get a feel for how to really do what you think you know how to do, or wish to learn to do.

stop calling Linksys products Cisco.

It's like calling a VW Passat an Audi A4, it's not an Audi, despite them being the same company.

Yes, they do. At the very least, they are better than stock antennas (unless your stock antennas happen to be 9dbi as well, then I wouldn't know if it would make a difference).

At the very least, it would boost your epeen and maybe level you up.

Replace humanity with machine. <3 hermit

Anyone mod laser beams w/ fog machine into their rack/servers yet? :p
