Hello all
I am just getting into the folding thing and am having trouble getting my 8800gt 512mb card to do anything. I have tried the GPU client and it gave me the "At present your GPU is not supported" error.
After that i tried the F@H tracker application that makes it easier but all i get is it says "resuming existing WU on GPU0"

Folding on my E8400 is working fine.

Specs:
E8400
4GB ram
8800gt 512mb
Win 7 64bit

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Must be some kind of driver related problem. Which drivers are you using and is there any other video card installed on the system as primary? If so, you're going to need to extend the desktop to this card. Also, which client did you DL, GPU2 or GPU3?

"resuming existing WU on GPU0" is a good thing. Can you see right above there to see % complet and PPD? You have to let it run for a while to see any progress.

I started with the 260.99 and also tried the 258's no go with both should i go back even older?
I dont have any other card plugged in although i would like to stick a 8800gts in there if i get the GT working.

I am using the FAH GPU Tracker V2. I setup the card as G80 on the GPU setting.

I have let it go for a while but it only shows 0 for PPD.

no the 258.96's should work perfectly fine. they are the drivers i prefer with the 8 series. what client are you using btw?

with the 8 series i highly recommend using the GPU3 client(i prefer the system tray client).

all you do is install the client, setup the config, user name, team number, and make sure you changed the machine ID number to 2. its in the advanced tab in the config. and thats it your done. you can monitor your smp and gpu client using HFM. it takes roughly 3-4 minutes per frame(1%) so it may take a while before you see that its working.

on the gpu3 client you should see some where in the range of 5500-6k PPD with the P11177/11179 WU's. if you can get your shaders up to 1728 or 1782 you will probably get into the 6500 PPD range.

and for those of you still out of the loop, yes you can run the the gpu3 client on the 8 series and no its not breaking any rules.. I shouldn't have to add this but i know some ones going to bring it up anyways...

Is the GPU3 client more productive with G92 GPUs now compared to GPU2?

by a long shot. especially with the p11177/11179 i average 5100(primary with 2 displays) and 5400(secondary) on my 8800GS's @ 700/1728/1000. if i overclock my secondary to 1836 on the shaders i can get 6k PPD. all gpu2 WU's except the 10110/11/12's i average 4300/4600 those other 3 i get 3900ish.

 I wasn't aware of the latest GPU3 WUs. I have most of my 8800GTs running @1836 shaders...

toss a couple on gpu3 and see how they do. out of the last 60 WU's ive only done 3 gpu2 WU's. 1 6600 and 2 353 pointers.

btw if you can run 1836 on gpu2. you should see if you can hit 1890. i can only do 1782 on gpu2 on my secondary but i can do 1836 on gpu3 WU's. plus the really low temps are nice.. :D 75C @ 35% fan right now vs 75C and 48% fan on gpu2.

OK, will try this tomorrow. I have my GPU3 clients in mothballs and will restart a few. Thanks for the heads up. Geez, things move too quickly in folding when it comes to new WUs to keep constantly up to date.

yeah the 11179's been out for 2 months now i think. just started seeing the 11177's 2 days ago. same point value and PPD. still waiting to see if they ever fix g200 performance on the gpu3 client.

I have two cards (limited edition Akimbo EVGA) that can hit 1890MHz with their shader clocks. Problem is one of them gets the occasional EUEs, so I drop both of them to 1836MHz. They were designed to run faster and I'm sure in games they can sustain 1890 no problem. I'll boost them up once I get the GPU3 client running. One card is a confirmed solid 1890, I know that much and it does ~6400 PPD on the 353-pointers. I'm sure with a slight voltage increase I could get the other card solid at 1890 but there's no voltage control on these old cards.

bios volt mod, thats what i did with my 8800GT. raised it from the stock 1.05 to 1.15v went from 630/1728/1015 to 760/1890/1015.

October 11th (advmethods) and 15th (gen-pop) to be precise, one of the rare GPU3 announcement threads where no one trol.. er, commented: :p

Wow, this was kind of a big deal. I have nobody to blame but myself for not catching this, thanks for the heads-up Tobit and SirMonkey.

To the OP, is it possible that your firewall may be blocking anything F@H related?

Wow, this was kind of a big deal. Is -advmethods still required to get these units?
No. Like I said, they were released to gen-pop on Oct. 15th so now it's just the luck of the draw.

I am still getting the " your card is not supported." error. I have tried using the tracker software and just the GPU3 client with no luck on each. I have done a clean install of the drivers and turned off my firewall. Anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks.

hmm weird. im out of idea's unless its something with the DLL files.

gpu2 client: take the cudart.dll, cufft.dll and try putting them in the program files/folding@home/folding@home-gpu folder.
gpu3 client: cudart32_30_14.dll, cufft32_30_14.dll

you could try loading F@H in admin mode as well. other then that i'm completely out of idea's.

If you don't get it resolved my advice is to post a thread on the FF or have a beta tester look into it. Best of luck.

Have you tried adding the -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flag?

is it not the only video card in your machine,

that sounds like the error you get when trying to fold on a card that does not have a monitor attached to it.

This box is just a headless fileserver. Do i have to have a monitor plugged into all DVI ports?

I believe that if you are running vista you do......... just try plugging a monitor in it to test, plug the monitor in and then start the client if it runs you then can unplug the monitor and it will keep running

not all DVI ports.

Just one port on each card that you intend to fold on.

and so you can stay headless.....
Look up "Dummy Plug". You should be able to make your own, it takes 3 resistors that are easy to get at radioshack, and a DVI to VGA converter. There are plenty of people in the forums who use them. You probably can buy one here.

ahh its headless.. that explains it. theres also a trick if i remember correctly all you have to do is plug a display in, start the client and you can disconnect the display and it should continue folding. you could give that a try as well.

what are you using to remote access the box?

Thanks for all the help. I am now folding on the 8800gt. I did indeed need a monitor plugged in. I do feel a little sheepish! Lesson learned i guess.

Im gonna make some dummy plugs tonight and pop in another 8800gts and see if i can get that going as well.

I use RDP
Thanks again for all the help. Cheers

One thing I noticed when managing one of my folding boxes is if you RDP in and try to start the GPU client it will fail with an unstable_machine error. To solve the problem I loaded team viewer and now administer using that, no more unstable_machine problems. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. Actually now that I think about it, it crashes any time I RDP. Might want to set up VNC/Team Viewer if you want to remotely manage.

Thanks for that i will set that up.

yeah your going to want to use something like realVNC or tightVNC as push said, since RDP changes your drivers to some generic crap which causes the client to freak out since it doesnt know what card you are using.

If you use the -forcegpu nvidia_g80 flag like Tobit suggested above, you shouldn't need to use a dummy plug. The F@H GPU2 client needs this flag on Vista/Win7 for multiple GPUs, or in your case a GPU with no monitor.

Confirmed, I removed my hated dummy plug and used the switch and now it folds without using the plug. Now if there was just some work available for my GTX570s.......
