Let the 6970 Rumors Begin

I can't believe we're still a month(ish) away from the release. It's good to hear the cards will be going out soon, hopefully that means we'll see some more leaked info shortly.

God damnit, I want me a 6990 so bad :(

Me too, but at what price ? And I hope they truly available at launch.

If the 6970 is supposed to be approx 30%-50% faster then the single 5870, then this 6990 beast should be blowing anything out of the water.

This is my opinion, I hit the nail in the coffin when I predicted the HD 6870 performance numbers on another forum, will try now with the following speculation. Cayman will be a considerably bigger chip than Barts. Considering AMD's previous behavior, midrange cards are usually half of what AMD has in the high end segment of the same family.

HD 3870 = 320 SP
HD 3650 = 120 SP

HD 4870 = 800 SP
HD 4670 = 320 SP

HD 5870 = 1600 SP
HD 5770 = 800 SP

HD 6970 = Speculation - At least 1920 SP (1 cluster disabled - 320SP less) for the HD 6950 and 2,240 for the HD 6970
HD 6870 = 1120

So I think that the HD 6950 certainly will be faster than the GTX 480 (HD 5870 is only about 15% slower than the GTX 480). And the HD 6970 will match and outperform the GTX 580 without hesitation. I also think that nVidia has something under sleeves.

Since they just released the 580 I'm not sure what nVidia has up its sleve unless they have a dual-GPU card on the way or perhaps some intresting driver updates.

As I have said before, the 6970 may be a little faster overall than the 580 but what made the 480 intresting is SLI and Surround and nVidia's better performance overall with multi-GPU multi-monitor setups. So the 6970 would have to be over 30% faster then the 5870 to match the 580 and make evern bigger strides than that with Eyefinity+Crossfire. I simply don't see all of that happening with the 6970, just my guess.

Bear in mind that AMD also improved CF scaling with the latest HD 6x00 series of cards, it might not match nVidia's SLI, but it improved a lot.

Two-way CF on a single monitor scales very well. What I'm talking about is everything over that, 3 way + scaling and Eyefinity, not seen a lot of numbers on that but it would have to be MUCH better to match the 580.

This is why I ended up with 480's. I really wanted to buy the cheaper 5870's 6 months before the 480's came out, but there was a litany of problems with crossfire eyefinity scaling that made me hold off.

The 480's were hot and expensive, but are rock solid with great performance in tri-sli.

But let's face it, AMD's forte is small modular chips that work well in pairs (they have the dual GPU card stuff down pat). I was under the impression they gave up on winning "The Fastest Single GPU Card" award a long time ago.

You really think they can advance their scalable, small, multi-GPU efforts AND beat nVidia at their own game in the big, single GPU market? I kinda doubt it.

I say the 5970 will be slower than the 580.

I agree with that. With 2 smaller chips your manufacturing costs go down AND you have another option for another price segment in one shot.

Plus it just makes sense with their Fusion direction overall to produce smaller chips which can be more easily combined with a CPU down the road.

Y.

I think you're both wrong. The 6970 will trade blows with the 580 with neither having a significant edge. It'll all come down to power, heat, overclocking and multi gpu scaling to set them apart. just my $0.02

Meh, Nvidia triple-SLI scaling sucks as well. Probably even worse than CFX unless the GTX 5xx has made some drastic changes. In the current market, dual GPU solutions are really the best performance you're going to get. A third or fourth gpu doesn't give you even close to the performance increase the second one will give. (20-30% or less per additional GPU beyond the second).

In 2D it can be it or miss, in 3D the scaling is practically 100% in Surround in every 3D Vision Ready game I've tried, Batman, BC2, JC2, Mafia II and even some non-3D Vision Ready but 3D compatible titles.

This is likely correct, in my view. 6970 may get the edge for me for capacity to run eyefinity without dreaded multi GPUs required.

The flip side of this is that you need more than on GPU in a LOT of games to drive them at multi-monitor resolutions.

I really haven't have nearly the number of issues I thought I'd have with 3x SLI and Surround, it works FAR better than most realize. Most of the issues are with with games simply not properly supporting multi-monitor.

The most power single GPUs simply can't deliver the gaming experience I want these days. They are a great fall back when things don't work with SLI and CF has the advantage of still going multi-monitor on a single card, but more often than not SLI will work if not in Surround it will at least allow for a game to run with everything maxed out.

The assumption I'm working with is that the 6970 should come close to performing the same as my current 5870 CFX eyefinity setup. At that point, a single card is vastly more desirable than a multi GPU setup.

Whether you want to add additional cards is a separate question. But I'd be very content with eyefinity at the 5870 CFX level from a single card. (More than content, because unlike CFX, it would probably work).

I agree, except with the "neither having a significant edge".

I'll call it right now: In the majority of games, across all tests from all sites, the 580 will be faster on average.

The potential 6970 buyer will have to decide whether the extra few FPS is worth the extra money, as the 6970 will be cheaper with better scaling (100% almost for CFX configurations) and less power & heat.

Why even bother attempting to predict anything?
There's no reliable information, except maybe some spec info and some press from ATI and the partners.

Even if/when the pre-release Chinese benches show up, we can't even trust those...
Comparing it to the GTX 580, and god forbid making a purchase decision right now based on speculation (IE; buying a GTX 580) is a scary thought indeed.

You'd think AMD would have said the 6870 was faster then the 580, as soon as it was released, to stop people from buying the 580. The lack of any comments from them makes me think the 6870 will be slower. I think they will have a lower price on the 6870 and beat the performance with the 6990.

You mean 6970.......And AMD seems to always remain tight lipped until the last minute. Not sure why, but I wouldn't jump the gun because of their silence.

My 5850 has done well and will be a year-old in January but I'm ready to get back to Nvidia. Unless the 6970 totally blows the 580 out of the water, I'll be selling the 5850 and going with a 580.

why? You've a single 5850 so no cfx issues why the jump just curious.

wow fanboyism at it's best.

brand preference can affect someone's purchase decisions? NO WAI!

Piratepress wants an upgrade and is saying that if the cards perform roughly equally he will purchase his preferred brand. If the AMD card performs better, he will buy it. How is that illogical fanboyism?

wow fanboyism at it's best.

I don't know if I'd call that being a fanboy. Maybe if he said his 5850 was a piece of crap, that Nvidia makes the best GPU' and that the 5xx cards are going to slaughter the 69xx cards....Then maybe. LOL.

Well, AMD/ATI fanboy that I am they got a point this time, reminds me of the old detonator shenanigans with benchmarking drivers slightly lowering image quality to give them a performance edge. They took a step forward by letting us disable the CAT AI texture optimization and took two back with the default quality setting issue.

Problem is, Nvidia has done the exact same thing, and not too long ago at that.......Regardless if the accusations are true or not.

Yeah but I expect that from them :) 3d IQ has traditionally been ATI's ace in the hole, especially when they had lower performing hardware, you could always count on "But look they're not cheating!!!! Only ATI gives you the best quality!!!". But since the GT2xx cards it seems Nvidia has had the upper hand in texture filtering (no shimmering). I'm fine with that, but I'm not fine with AMD taking the low road where nvidia once travelled, keep that up and I'll consider buying my first ever nvidia card, which is something I once swore I'd never do.

Now let's see them spin the thing about locking out Pyshix or whatever it's called if any AMD card is detected. Sighs.

It's all a joke. Profits are the name of the game, honesty be damned. You know why Nvidia posted it in their blog? Because they'd be called out if they made an official announcement. It's like two serial killers trying judge each other (morally) based on how many murders they've committed.

I must admit, It'll be interesting to see AMD's response to these accusations.

What should they answer? They confirmed to the german review sites computerbase.de and pcgameshardware.de that the AF filtering is now more aggressive on the 68xx series which means lower IQ. They have been asked at and shortly after Barts launch.

More aggressive? Not entirely sure what that means, but I assume you have link where AMD admits to their AF being inferior to Nvidia's? The only thing they've commented on is the possibility of shimmering issues.

another trash talk from nVidia, not something that is expected.. its marketing..

Plus, nVidia have cheated a lot in the past, they both cheated at a point..

what is the point? Pointing finger without looking into the mirror? LMAO.....

And this time they are pointing their magic finger that really just a bullshit than what they trying to claim..

I have a feeling that they does this because they are afraid of what is upcoming from AMD next, tries make more sales before something might destroy their market... -.-
or it could be the opposite.. which they can pretty much talk all the shit they want to stomp their competitor's sales due to upcoming cards from AMD that is pretty much a junk...
