Start Folding the Easy Way!!

Is it possible to set up some sort of calendar/timer? I'm happy to do this, but I don't want to have to deal with starting/stopping the clients, and I can't have em running while i"m working...

You can install folding at home as a service, then create two batch files, one to start the service and another to stop it. Setup two scheduled tasks, one for the start the service batch file and another for the stop service batch file.

The downside is that if you can't complete the work unit in that time the client is running, you'll be getting a smaller bonus.

Geeze, you guys weren't kidding when you say that if you can run the GPU folding client over the SMP client, it's almost not even worth running the SMP client...

I just upgraded my system to a Phenom II X6 1090T today. Even overclocked to 3.8Ghz, as I type this my two SSC GTX260 Core216's have completed 75% of a work unit each. The CPU (with all six cores going)? 4%.
well,I run a 1090T with two gts 250,did a short try out without the gts´s and the tpf lowered by 8-10 seconds on smp (had the same smp wu with and without),in numbers smp looses 500-1000 ppd when running the gpu´s while the cards gives 5-6000 ppd each.

but both gts 250 and gtx 260 is gpu2-cards which doesn´t influence cpu much.

i run my 260 with my 1090T.....i see anywhere from a 1 second to 20 second TPF change.....not a huge PPD loss on some units....and those that it is, its PPD offsets it more than enough....

I started folding on my work machine again. Swapped in an E8500 at 3.8ghz. How much PPD would I get from this. Thinking of grabbing an nvidia card down the road when I get some spare change to help fold too.

A fast dual core gets you about 1500 ppd. Maybe 2000 max. A Gts 450 would be a nice addition.

I'm kind of new to folding and just saw this thread so I got the tracker program. I'm running SMP and GPU0 on my Phenom 955 and HD4890, respectively. I noticed that the GPU0 isn't letting my graphics card go into 3D mode, it is only folding with 2D clocks. Is this normal? Also, the SMP seems to be going really slow with very few PPD. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong...

Ati cards consume a lot of CPU cycles and reduce SMP performance substantially. That remains one of the biggest disadvantages to folding with an Ati card. You can optimize your setup with some tweaking and that will minimize this issue up to a certain degree. NVidia is superior for folding in that respect and generates higher production.

What can I do about the 2D clocks?

I started with this program last night and it is working fantastically. Thanks a lot for the post and the program!

your looking at the small picture.. time means nothing.. on that processor your looking at about 10-14k PPD compared to the gtx 260's which are doing about 6-7k PPD each and consuming twice the amount of power compared to that x6 1090T..

Actually I'm looking at the ink blot on a Rorschach test; trying to decipher what it looks like. :D

I did notice that I get more points from SMP jobs than from GPU jobs, but what I'm still trying to figure out is what the whole concept of points is for in the first place. I'm assuming that the points are used towards your rank (points + work units completed), correct?

You get point when you turn in a WU.
They are worthless, but it helps you keep track of what you have done.
Also makes for a bunch of fun trying to overtake other people.

poitns are the reason musky has 2 SR-2's..........

but yes, your poitns go towards your rank.......the idea i think was to breed competition....but they made a beast that cannot be controlled :D

I switched over to this after running a2 bigadv in a vm and a3 bigadv console and I think I prefer folding using this tool.

newbie here, so is it worth running a gpu client along with smp? just built a new rig with a phenom II X4 955 Black edition and currently running an old 8800GT planning on picking up a gts 460 soon.
also, im trying to use the FAH client but the PPD just stays at 0 the entire time.

yes it is worth it.

As for the issue of getting the PPD to go up, no idea i havent used this program before.

i would really like to start Folding full time. I have one computer, the one in my Sig. I won't do GPU folding as the GPU Fan is way to loud. As for PCU folding the main problem I am having is the increased Lag in the system. I know that Folding is only suppose to use unused CPU cycles but I can tell big time when its running and when its not. I can even see it when I am playing games. I have tried reducing the used # of cores to 3 and no differance, but its only using 75% across all 4 cores then.
If I could get this running with an acceptable amount of Lag I would love to do it full time and contribute to the [H]orde, shoot, if I had the extra money I would even buy a small rack and some 1u servers to put in the closet, but I am on disability and a limited income so I will have to work with what I got.

Is there a way to get this running on 3cores 100% and leave one core free, or will this still cause the lag I am getting?

thats what i did, and used trayit to make it minimize to the systray

Clicking the X button on the main window will also minimize the Tracker to the system tray. You can restore it by double-clicking the systray icon.

Is anyone still having problems getting SMP to work right? My task manager says all 4 cores are working, but the percentage complete never goes up. I have the SMP working properly when I installed the beta SMP manually, but I like how the tracker is a one click simple to use program.

As a matter of fact, this guy is having the same problem: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1556900

Yep, my SMP is being weird. I switched to the regular sys tray client for now.

I tried redownloading the clients and that didn't work. I am on the latest version of the tracker too. It runs the 4 cores 100% but still doesn't do anything. My GPU works fine. Running Windows 7 64-Bit.

Check your SMP log file to see if the client is actually making progress but just not updatng the tracker window.

I had this problem with the SMP client myself once, and it was just a bad WU. It worked fine after it downloaded a new WU. If the problem occurs even with a different WU then there is something else going on.

I starting to wonder if -bigadv is worth it on my main workstation. Its the only system capable of running it but I also pause it alot to game. Completing a WU will take ages.

Also, I just installed this tracker on my Q6600 server and SMP isn't an option, its grayed out. Any idea?

As long as you can finish it within the deadline, it's fine. I pause my client for gaming fairly often as well but I am still able to complete -bigadv units without issue.

This guide should be stickied IMHO. I see it mentioned periodically on the front page, but unless I'm missing something it isn't mentioned in any of the stickied guides.

First of all I would like to thank Kyle once again for getting me a 5830 to test with the Tracker.

I have figured out ATI + Nvidia folding on the same computer. It's kind of interesting what needs to be done to make it work correctly.

The test system I am using has an ATI 5830 and an Nvidia 8800 GTS 512. In order to get the 2 cards to fold at the same time BOTH cards need the -gpu 0 flag. For the 5830 you can use GPU2 or GPU3, but you need -forcegpu ati_r700 either way.

Second, if FahCore_11.exe already exists in the client folder, you may have to delete it. There are 2 versions of FahCore_11.exe, one for Nvidia and one for ATI. As a result, you need to delete the core (which causes the correct core to be downloaded) when switching between the 2.

Third, I had to install the ATI drivers after the Nvidia drivers. I couldn't get the 5830 to fold without doing this. This step also applies if you are doing other distributed computing projects through BOINC like Milkyway@Home, since BOINC wasn't recognizing the GPU.

That being said, if you want to use the Tracker for ATI + Nvidia folding this is what you need to do:

1. Change the -gpu x flags:
For ATI + Nvidia folding, the -gpu x flags are independent of eachother. So the first ATI card needs -gpu 0, the second -gpu 1, and so on. The Nvidia cards in the same system also start with -gpu 0 for the first card, then -gpu 1 for the second card, and so on. You will need to edit these flags in client.cfg in the Tracker's GPU client folders. You can use whatever clients for whatever GPUs, it doesn't matter. The -gpu x flags don't have to match the name of the client.

2. Remove FahCore_11.exe from all the client folders.
The client will NOT automatically re-download the correct ATI or Nvidia core if the wrong one is present. If you use the wrong one it will fold on that GPU type regardless of the -forcegpu setting. So if you have a client with -gpu 0 and -forcegpu ati_r700, but you have the Nvidia FahCore_11.exe, it will actually try to fold the WU on Nvidia GPU 0.

3. Set forcegpu for all clients.
This step may or may not be required depending on the system, but to be sure it will work this is necessary. Otherwise there may be problems since you are using multiple clients with the same -gpu x flag.

Hopefully this will be helpful to anyone with ATI + Nvidia in the same system. Getting this to work is complicated right now, but I will be adding proper support for this type of configuration in a future version of the Tracker.

I've been trying to figure this out for the longest time with this utility (CF'd 4890's and a GTS 250), and just have the 4890's going right now. Can't wait to get home and get all three going :D

Having trouble reaching the download site to try it out. Anyone else? Might be a temporary issue. I'll try again laters.

On the latest stable version, deleted the last SMP wu and restarted and it's actually working. FINALLY!! Nice as I generally only FOLD during the non summer months or when its cold out here in SoCal.

Well I am officially folding for team 33 or the horde or whatever. I am just glad I could help out, and this post made it easy for me. I have both my cores and both my 9800gts folding for the cure:D

awesome!

Welcome to Team 33 aka the [H]orde :)

how do I get my badge I can not find my user id or what i need to sign up with the horde to view my stats:confused:, on the horde site

Great tool! I have tried folding on my PS3s, but found it a bit cumbersome. This PC client is great as it allows me to leverage full use of my 980x and 460GTX SLI system which stays idle most of the time.

Welcome to the team you guys! Just don't forget to switch the team number to #33 since it is defaulted to that "other" team :)
