I have a VM image that I think will work for running bigadv on a 4+ GHz AMD X6. Since I don't have one, I need an alpha tester or two. Anyone interested? PM me or post here.

Hey musky,

I would be willing to try it. My 1055T is only running at 3.5Ghz but I think I could easily get it up to 3.8 or so.

See what you can do for overclocking. I want to make sure we give these machines the best chance to make deadlines easily. I am working on the upload now.

if you still need someone, i can give it a go one day.....ill have to tweak my voltage up a bit, but i can go up for a day or a few to get it tested(i know i can get it to 4.0 with 1.45 v :( .... cant ask for everything lol)...

but seriously ya i'm interested so long as i can use Virtual Box(dont want to reinstall VMWare unless i have to....though if you really need a tester i will)

hope my incoherent response above makes sense

Any chance a i5-750@4.0 could make it? and how much memory do i need?

This is a VMWare image, although I think Virtual Box can run a VMWare machine. I just tested with VMWare.

The file is still uploading. I'll send you guys a link and some basic intructions once it finishes. It isn't very automated right now, but it isn't that hard to run.

Probably a bad idea. What do your standard A3 frame times tell you as far as making the deadline? I am guessing it won't.

musky, ill give it a go in virtual box later tonight once its uploaded

ill have it go at 3.8 probably, dont want to feed my CPU the 1.49 v needed to get 4.0 stable

edit: Lehmann, your pobably wont since youve only got four cores....but hell give it a go maybe we will all be surprised

Damn it, I just bought myself a 1055t for my HTPC 24\7 folding and was all happy...

Now I see these post for bigadv...and off course I am tempted... but a HTPC build with 2G ram will not make it in terms of colling or memory.

Must resist and be happy with what I got. :'(

I'm in in in!:-D...Monkey and I have gone crazy trying to figure this out, and seeing how I have the fastest clocked X6 (folding here) I can't wait!!!!

god i need to just put mine at 4.1 to shut you up about that...

no PM love for me ?

if you can get on IRC quickly i can shoot you info he told me to pass onto you..

No irc client...wouldn't know where to start to set it up.

Lots of discussion about this at the Stanford Folding Forum. I suspect this might drive Stanford to take a stand one way or the other in the near future.

It has been my experience that a machine needs to do better than a ~4 minute TPF in standard A3 WUs to be fast enough for -bigadv bonus deadlines. I have two 8-core machines that achieve a few seconds over the 4 minute mark and they do over a one hour TPF with the P2684s. Therefore, they cannot make the bonus deadline with these WUs. I'm sure they can with every other -bigadv WUs but not the '84s, hence my grievance.

A rough performance guideline to estimate P2684 performance would be achieving a ~3.5 min TPF in standard SMP WUs. My machines that accomplish this TPF threshold will perform anywhere between the high 40s to low 50s minute TPF with a P2684 and make the bonus deadline. TPFs with other -bigadv WUs will be much better, so it all hedges on what a system can do with the '84s to determine whether they should run -bigadv at all.

I hope this might be informative to anyone with marginal machines and want people to get the most out of all the AMD hex-cores out there.

their stand right now is that they dont care as long as you dont break the EULA which is why they asked Gen to no longer distribute the modified client(which made this crap easy to do) but other then that theres not much they can do nor will do.. all they will do is say its a bad idea but they wont come out and say its against the rules.. because im pretty sure if they were to come out and say that what we are doing with the x6 is not allowed that they will be forced to say that using an i7 to run bigadv is not allowed either since its not even a real 8 core processor.. its a quad core with hyperthreading..

If anything they might lower the preferred deadline to catch systems that are borderline. Of course this is only a guess. You might be right and they'll just let things roll as they are now.

Anyone have a normal frame time on a 6701 with an X6 at pushing 4 GHz?

I'd be willing to give it a try. I've just about finished transcoding all of my movies so I now need something to keep all 6 cores busy.

ccity, what is the verdict? I'll try to figure out IRC here in a moment...what is the best IRC client?

alot of people here use mibbit.com

also mIRC is great, if you have Trillian or Pidgin already, they will do it as well

Mine is up to 3.9Ghz now, but I have to replace the RAM. This 1333mhz DDR3 is slowing things down and right now (luckily) I'm running a P6701 @ 8:40 which seems slow.

I have some 1600mhz G.Skill Ripjaws that I'll put in there in a few minutes.

that is slow, at 3.2 i wasnt that slow on a P6701....and my ram was at 1333.....something is up with yoru setup.

Why do you want to do this when theres a shortage of bigadv WU and you're only talking about an extra 5kppd at most?

we should get ~25k ppd, standard OC of 3.6 on a x6 gets 9k.....so thats over a 200% increase....

correct me if i'm wrong though, i know someone somewhere said around 25k ppd

That must be with the fastest units. I can't imagine an X6 doing that kind of PPD with P2684s. I would expect closer to 20k if not lower with the '84s unless I'm totally underestimating what 6 cores can do. The thing about -bigadv is that we get nearly as many '84s as all other -bigadv units combined, if my experience is anything normal. IOW, close to a 50/50 chance what you'll receive will be an '84 if it's a -bigadv at all.

Even if we only average 18K PPD on the slower WU's, it's still worth it to us. I am lucky to get 14k PPD out of the standard SMP client..

Oh definitely, I'm in total agreement. Even if the potential benefit was only a couple of thousand higher PPD I would still recommend it. Trust me, despite the fact I don't own an X6 I know exactly how everyone with these systems feels. I was only making rough estimations what PPD might be like. I could easily be wrong.

ya, 20k is double my output for the CPU :p so worth the hasel in my book if i get it going

at least a 33% increase in output for the same power usage = very much worth it.

I'm getting frame times of 7:05 here on a 6701 using an i7-920 @ 4.01 Ghz.

You would knowingly harm the progress of the project for a couple thousand ppd!? That seems a bit, uh, twisted and sad.

Yeah, four GPUs sitting on it, that's what :p but I plan to dumb it down to one based on my latest hydro bill. GPUs just suck too much $$$$$$$$$
