The University of Central Florida is spending approximately $434,000 on a simulator which will be used to promote abstinence amongst pre-teen girls. Basically, it’s a place for girls to practice rejecting male approaches.
"A boy similar in age might approach the person playing the game and ask her to make out or there might be some sexual innuendo."

This is a terrible idea unless it's a social experiment. Even still, it's a terrible idea.

What's so wrong about promoting protection? Really now... Oh right, religion.

this remind anyone else of the southpark episode when girls are taught to reject boys with fewer that 3 credit cards?

Just teach guys that not everything is about sex...

Then we will see the girls making the advances, nice! :D

These are pre-teenage girls...

I personally believe abstinence is futile and we should promote proper birth control, but you really have to start young to indoctrinate someone and make them think sex is bad. If you start out with some teenager that's already all hormoned up, good luck convincing them the opposite sex still has cooties.

I grew up in England, where we started sex ed at the age of eight in third grade.

At that age, no one understood WTF the teacher was talking about...

Then I came to the USA, where we had sex ed (again for me) in seventh grade at age 12...

England was too early, but the USA felt late, I admit. Given the choice, I'd go with England's method: educate 'em before they even understand or care.

You may be beginning to be hormoned-up, but you don't grasp any of the consequences of the activity. Abstinence is futile, but it's not a concern any pre-teen should really have.

It's certainly not something I would have done at that age, but that's because my parents were completely open about it, but didn't want me doing that with at that age for sure.

Maybe I'm just the rare minority that actually care about and respected my parents' wishes?

(FWIW - my mom was/is a religious nut, but supported/accepted my having some sort of girlfriend I remember as early as 14... My opinion was that was too young, never know what could happen... My parents taught me to respect sex, my body and others' bodies, so even HS felt way young for that...)

Nice uneducated - flippant position about what abstinence is about.

I think the same thing could have been done for far less money, but everything has to be about the cool tech right?

Ok, I admit 'bad' was a lazy word choice, but my point isn't exactly hidden in there. Way to ignore the point.

Abstinence only education has less than a stellar track record, spending nearly a half-million of taxpayers money on it isn't going to make it any more useful. Just look at the Palin clan. Education trumps "Christian ideology" any day of the week.

People wonder why girls are starting to grow breasts a 9-years-old have only to look at all the growth hormones being pumped into livestock lately.

I can see benefits to "toughening" girls up to male approaches ["but he said I had nice eyes! :*("], though trying this approach to promote abstinence is a little off. While there's many physical/health benefits to it, that's the least of what abstinence is about.

So where have girls been learning about rejecting males so far? They get pretty damned good at it.

Don't be so quick to jump on the organic/natural food bandwagon, because thats exactly where you're headed with the "hormone" crap. There is a far simpler and more accurate explanation for why girls are developing earlier. A girls body fat percentage is absolutely key to when she begins maturing physically. Keeping in mind that you don't hear anyone arguing with the assertion that we have an "obesity epidemic" means that as kids get fatter on average (and they are) that they will enter puberty that much sooner.

The average age for girls has been on a constant decrease in this country, and its all for the same reason. First it was going from malnutrition and a more active lifestyle, then fairly healthy, and now its overfed and sedentary.

How about the fact that you can use a condom, it can break, and sperm can sometimes get by?

How about the fact that birth control doesn't always work?

How about the fact that you still get diseases with protection?

And with idiots thinking that abstience=sex is bad, instead of it being about protecting your body, it's no wonder 25% of teens have an std...

Epic fail on the part of UCCF, they could have bought an x-box dev kit with Kinect and done the same thing at a fraction of the price.

Why is there no simulator for pre-teen boys reject the predatory advances of older women? And yes it does happen.

Hypocritical shit.

maybe instead of simulators teaching our children perhaps the parents should be
Because parents are more likely to lay down the law than to role-play realistic situations to their children? Because parents are likely to just parrot "facts" like the following (a practice that has been demonstrated to be the most ineffective way to promote learning):

How about the fact that you can use a condom, it can break, and sperm can sometimes get by?

How about the fact that birth control doesn't always work?

How about the fact that you still get diseases with protection?

Regardless, teenage (and pre-teenage) sex will happen. Peer pressure will always be greater than parental pressure, especially when you're young and think you're immortal.

ABC: Abstinence, Be faithful, proper use of Condoms. It's the only way to cover the bases.

Yeah but you pretty much have three choices when it comes to teen sex ed:

1. Tell them nothing; then they learn about sex and the feelings they are experiencing on their own, which leads to beliefs such as you can't get pregnant your first time..etc

2. Tell them not to have sex, no matter what; then they say "bullshit" and completely ignore everything you say

3. Tell them that sex is completely natural but is a big responsibility, and explain the different types of birth control and their benefits and risks; then they will actually listen to what you have to say, and if they still decide to have sex, will at least know how to reduce the risks as much as possible

Also, I find this "simulation" to be every so slightly sexist, teaching girls that guys are just apes whose only goal is to fuck you up the ass...cue the laughter, I know, but in all seriousness I think that's rather unfair.

This is degrading to women. F--- your religious programming.

What teens need to know about sex are the risks of not using protection, the responsibility of bearing a child, and that a woman has the right to choose when she's ready to become a mother.

No, the STDs are coming from a lack of education, and lack of knowledge on using protection, or when they do use it, lack of knowledge on how to use it properly. Condoms shouldn't break if used properly and people would just RTFM.

Sure it's not 100%, but then again, nothing on Earth is infallible. A little bit of common sense goes a long way in that respect.

Condoms don't protect against stds. Try getting info on the matter before speaking.

Like most other stereotypes, there is some basis in fact to support the notion that "guys just want to get into a girls pants".

HAHHAHAHHHAHHAHAHHAHAhhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaahaahahahahahhahhahahhaha

Stop it, you're killing me! You get a gold star for passing abstinence training! :D

Rather than an abstinence simulator for girls, why not have a sex simulator for the boys.

Speaking as a guy, I can tell you that as a teenager my primary goal in life was to get laid whenever possible, and that I would go to any reasonable extent to achieve that goal. In fact, the only guys I knew who weren't trying to get into some girls pants were the gay guys and the guys with serious developmental issues who were afraid of sex.
