I sent in my 8800 Ultra for RMA and it seems like I am getting a GTS250 512MB in return. I was expecting something equal or better for what I shipped in. Also consider how much I payed for the card :X.

Why would they send me a card that isn't as good as the one I sent in?

contact the bfg rep in the forums...he'll take care of you and hook you up
his name is jeff kozlowski

Isn't the GTS 250 equal or better than an 8800 ultra? Maybe not in terms of how much you paid for the ultra when it first came out... but current performance?

GTS 250 is a renamed 9800GTX isnt it ? so its better then the 8800 Ultra iam pretty sure.

the only argument u may have is on the 512 ram they do make a 1GB model so a GTS 250 1GB may be arguable but the 512MB GTS 250 will still outperform that 8800 Ultra anyways

Yep, not sure what you are complaining about here dude...really, research before posting please.
Runs cooler as well, more efficient.
I would take that any day.

I'm complaining about a gift that costed over 400 bucks and now I am getting something that isn't up to par.

LOL dude it is better, did not you read any of the previous posts?
Just because you paid $400 years ago does not mean you are going to get a GTX295 now LOL
You do not get an item to match what you paid for...it matches or beats it performance wise...you are trying to abuse the system...that is not cool.

Umm...8800 Ultra is better then GTS 250 so I would be pissed.

Ask for a GTX 260 c216 for the least.

There you got, help the kid abuse the system by demanding things he do not deserve....

No, the 9800GTX is worse than the 8800GTX and Ultra cards. It's memory configuration isn't as good. When AA and AF get vranked up the difference is quite apparent.

You sir need a /facepalm, quit trolling and abusing your rights to post here.

GTS 250 512mb = 9800GTX+

8800 Ultra, heck even the regular GTX > 9800GTX+ at high resolution when memory/bandwidth becomes a bottleneck = lower fps and more stuttering.

First who the hell are you to tell me when I can or cannot post?
Second, the ultra has more memory but runs slower, remember the old 8800gts story?
I would take the gts250 any day over the 8800 ultra oven.

Oh and dude, /facepalm...do you have to be so geeky?

Doesn't work that way, and never has. When you RMA a card, you get back the same card, or a card equivalent to that card, not what you pay for. Otherwise, you'd have gamers RMA'ing their cards every time a new generation is released, and companies like BFG and EVGA would be out of business. The GTS-250 might be slightly inferior to the 8800GTX, but considering it's power savings, it's not all that unfair of a tradeoff. However, had I been the tech in charge of the RMA, I would have at least given you the 1GB version.

Also take into consideration that the 8800 Ultra model was a low production card, and may not even be available anymore, so there is no other option. They may not be able to give you an 8800 Ultra back because they simply don't have an 8800 Ultra to give.

Otherwise, you do have a somewhat valid complaint here, but screaming on the HardOCP forums is not the way I would have gone to solve this problem.

Whatever, I guess you all defend each other for your RMA "tactics"
I am off this one, I hope BFG does not go out of their way on this one.

I was never implying that because it costed so much that I should get something that is worth that amount now. How do I think they would make money? I should have phrased it saying that for how much it costed I deserve something of equal or greater value.

I had seen many people get 260's as a replacment which is fair considering it is the next card up from the Ultra. I was just wondering why they decided to send me a GTS250.

lollerskater69, the very least they can do is give you a 1GB GTS 250.

Yeah I would be fine with that I guess. I have a new monitor coming in so every bit of performance helps.

Hasn't the memory bandwidth been an issue at higher resolution for the 8800GTS 512 -> 9800 GTX series specially where AA is concerned? (As Dan D had mentioned).

I was going to state this as well earlier in this thread, but when I noticed the majority of posters stating something different I thought maybe my memory was failing me on this one...

Since this is not the case, he should get a GeForce 260 at least. Though this would be an upgrade lets not support tactics that allow a company to offer an inferior product in place of a better one, even if it means the next offering would be an "upgrade" compared to what is being replaced...

PS... I use to own a 8800 GTS 512MB, at 1080P on my Sharp TV it was definitely taking a hit for AA, but at the time I didn't feel like putting the extra out for that 8800 GTX.

Also on a note I was going to make earlier. It could be due to the smaller number of GeForce 8800 Ultra owners vs. GTX out there, that BFG doesn't have a standard to meet the slightly higher quality of the Ultra in regards to an RMA. This may have been the same thing they offer GeForce 8800 GTX owners... /shrugs

Did you contact Jeff? What did he say? Definately a valid complaint, they should have at least sent you the 1GB version.

Agreed. The 9 series had most with 8's going ..meh when released.

The problem is that the 8800GT, 9600GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+ and even the 9800GX2 all use a 256bit memory bus. Granted they employed a compression technology on these cards that made this more effective than an ordinary 256bit bus would have been but it still didn't match the 384bit memory bus that the 8800GTX and Ultra used. Adding to the problem is the fact that the 9800GTX only has 512MB of RAM instead of 768MB. This is why the 9800GTX is inferior to the venerable 8800 Ultra.

At release, the reviewers used two different drivers when comparing the two. Both supplied by nVidia.
A inf file was needed to use the "9" series driver on the 8s.

lollerskater69, good luck. :)

Posts like this make me want to scream. I'm far from a grammar Nazi, but I definitely have to call this one out. You posted several definitions for "costed" to one-up the guy who called you out on it, and you obviously didn't check to see what you were posting definitions for.

"Costed" isn't a word, and you posted the definitions for "costing", which is a word.

I was never implying that because it costed so much that I should get something that is worth that amount now. How do I think they would make money? I should have phrased it saying that for how much it costed I deserve something of equal or greater value.

That's right, you should have thought about how you were phrasing that sentence, just as you should have thought about what definitions you were posting when you tried to one-up that guy, just as you probably should have taken this to BFG first before throwing a bitch fit on the HardOCP forums.

I'm not entirely brushing off your original complaint here. I do think you should be entitled to at least a GTS-250-1GB version at the very least. However, I personally feel you're going about this the ENTIRELY wrong way, and you're making yourself look bad in the process.

Think son, think.

Think son, think.

What do you expect from someone who thought it would be funny/cute/cool to put "69" in their username? :D

EDIT:

OP: As others have said, your first step should have been to contact BFG and not to come here bitching like a child. No one here can resolve your issue, only someone at BFG can. It would certainly have "costed" you less time getting this all sorted out.

OP - I'm looking into this for you now. At the very least you should have received a 1GB version of that card so I'm not exactly sure what happened there. I'll PM you with a resolution.

climate change must be ``considered'' and ``costed,''

sorry, I just had to :p

Ultra > 250

Jeff will take care of you. Write back on updates plz.

If we're really going to get nitpicky about the word costed... it's not right in the way he used it, but it's a word.

I almost feel dirty for posting this, but j-sta, you are misreading. Maybe you know and are just joking, but costed is past tense for costing, which is a verb for evaluating cost or expenditure. This is similar to how the word sourcing is a verb for evaluating possible sources for a product. Therefore your original use as a past-tense for cost is incorrect, as the past tense of cost (I paid...) is still cost. Correct usage would be, "That card cost me $400!" Your statement, as written, reads "That card evaluated my cost (buying price) at $400!"

Just thought you might want to know if you didn't already.

8800 Ultra is superior to GTS 250 so OP has a valid complaint, particularly since they sent a model with less memory. I'd think a GTX 260 896MB would be a fair replacement in this case.

I like where this thread is going:

1. One side is trying to determine what the suitable upgrade for his video card.
2. Another side is trying to prove whether or not the word, "costed" is a correct use of English.

OP - I'm looking into this for you now. At the very least you should have received a 1GB version of that card so I'm not exactly sure what happened there. I'll PM you with a resolution.

It's reasons like this why i love BFG

Can you guys pleeeeease start selling AMD cards??? :D

stating that it was, in fact, a word.
although yes, I do know the word was used incorrectly. I just didn't feel like stating that :D

The GTS 250 is a rebranded 9800GTX+, which is around 9% faster than a 9800GTX, so stop calling it a 9800GTX, for the same reason you don't call an 8800 Ultra an 8800GTX.

I don't think Tomshardware is particularly reliable for benchmark results, so I found a review of extreme FSAA settings (16x and higher) with the 8800 Ultra, the 9800GTX+ and GTX 260:

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...0-GTX-Extreme-FSAA-Benchmarks-and-OC/Reviews/

Mind you, these are settings that most of us wouldn't ordinarily even try to run. Quoting from the article what is perhaps the best summation of the 9800GTX+ versus the 8800 Ultra:

The Geforce 9800 GTX+ is doing well at 16xS and 16x Supersampling, it often can beat the 8800 Ultra. That's the effect of the superior filling rate. If bandwidth and VRAM are the deal - especially with 32xS - it is slower, even when overclocked. In the worst case the 512 MiByte video memory don't suffice - this is as a general more often the case with 32xS.
