Dell U2410

I got my U2410 a couple days ago.

On the factory calibration report, the chart labeled Gamma is really a luminance chart.
Don't expect a straight line at 2.2, this is not gamma per se but luminance in cd/m2
on the Y-axis vs gray level (0-255) on the X-axis, and it is supposed to look like an exponential curve, OK?

Depending on the calibration software you use, you may see IRE on the X-axis vs luminance in ftL on the Y-axis.

It would have been nice if Dell had also shown the ideal luminance curve for a gamma of 2.2 on the same chart.

So, if your gamma doesn't track 2.2 closely, your luminance curve will deviate from the ideal one. If gamma is >2.2 your luminance will be too low, and if gamma is <2.2 your luminance will be too high (at any given gray level).

Grayscale tracking looks nice and flat but at 7000K rather than the 6500K standard.
I have no idea why they calibrate with a 7000K target. I know some software lets you calibrate using the monitor's 'native' color temperature, maybe that's why.

The report doesn't even tell you what preset the grayscale tracking and gamma charts correspond to ... I'm sure they're different with different presets.

I know zip about AdobeRGB standards, just sRGB ... I'm more used to calibrating plasma TV's with a robust Color Management System (CMS) like on the Samsungs.

The DeltaE on my charts is quite good, it's consistently <2 in sRGB, and <2 in AdobeRGB except for Gray7, Red3 and Green3 where it's more like 3.75. The charts still have text saying Avg DeltaE < 5.0 but the actual results are better than that, so I think that Avg DeltaE < 5.0 is just the calibration target.
 
I haven't set up my U2410 yet, but it better not have the awful problem with uniformity on a white background that I saw on two different 2209WA's that I returned to Dell ... they were both kind of orange tinted on the right half of the screen. This problem has been reported in gory detail in the 2209WA thread on HF. I'm amazed it didn't bother more people. Other than that problem, I really liked the 2209WA a lot, it calibrated very well.
It was also ridiculously bright ... had to turn brightness down to near zero.

Dell was wonderful to deal with on the 2209WA returns, so I jumped on the U2410 at 20% off. I'm willing to be an early adopter because Dell customer service is very accommodating, and I expect them to be even more sensitive about product quality issues on an UltraSharp.

I never expect things like firmware updates to fix problems on monitors. OK yes on Blu-Ray players, but not on monitors.

I guess I'm ready to accept some minor flaws because I'm not into paying twice the price for an NEC LCD2490Wuxi ... those aren't entirely perfect either.

Unfortunately, mine has pinkish tint on the top right. I've already requested a replacement.
 
I received my U2410 a couple days ago. Primary use is for photo editting/ viewing. Overall impression is good. My previous monitor was a NEC wmgx2. I definitely prefer the glossy coating of the NEC, but the Dell coating is OK as long as you don't sit too close.
The sRGB mode - well, it's OK, but to me the white balance looks a bit green. Someone else says it measured closer to 7000k than the typical 6500K for sRGB. I don't know why Dell would do this. The problem is there is no way to tweak the sRGB preset. You can use the custom color mode, but then you're in wide gamut color. I hope Dell will release some kind of firmware update that addresses the green tint. The dithering effect in sRGB mode is just noticeable in dark mono- color swatches, but in actually viewing photos I don't notice it.

For now I'm using the custom mode that I've calibrated using a Spyder 3. This gives the white balance that I like, but also has the disadvantages of wide gamut. Desktop looks cooked. In color managed apps like Nikon View NX, Capture NX, the colors look good and photos look fantastic.

Bottom line is that I'll keep it, but I wish the sRGB mode was better.
 
Why dynamic contrast option is not available in my u2410 ? Is it connection type related? (i use dvi 1920*1200 @59hz)

I did not read all the threads yet, even if I do, I probably do not understand it all. I purchased this monitor for editing and printing photographs, and it is on the way from Dell right now. My question is that do I really need to calibrate this monitor with calorimeter and software such as Spyder3 Pro, since it said it was color calibrated at the factory for accuracy. If I need to calibrate this monitor, should I calibrate it with the custom mode? Or is there better way to do it?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Is anybody else having trouble getting theirs? I ordered mine on September 12, and they keep e-mailing me and pushing the date back further and further. The latest I have heard is September 29, but who knows if that'll even pan out.
 
Mine was ordered on the 18th and it still hasn't shipped even though it says it should ship w/in 24 hours.

For DVI, it seems that dynamic contrast is only available under the "Game" mode preset. Hopefully, that helps.

If color accuracy is important for your work, then yes, calibrate it. And yes that would be saved under your custom mode setting,
 
I just received this monitor last week in the hopes it would finally replace my trusty Samsung 215tw.

Overall I think this monitor delivers. My criteria is that it is non-TN, standard gamut (or at least emulated well), isn't overly bright and doesn't buzz/hum loudly. Perhaps a tall order, but this one actually covers that list.

I have it hooked up to my PC desktop and my Macbook Pro laptop. When comparing the screen to my laptop, you can definitely see the graininess that has been mentioned. However after a few minutes of use, it seems to disappear and I don't notice it.

For those that can't stand monitor buzz/hum, you might have found a winner. At 100 brightness the monitor is silent, at 50 it gets louder, at 25 (my current setting) it is silent again and finally at 0 it gets a tiny bit louder. This will most likely vary with every monitor, but the pitch of the buzz/hum at any brightness level isn't enough to make me want to return the monitor. This has always been a cause of my returns because my office is very quiet.

The only issue I am having (there always is one) is that there is a slight green tint on the left and red on the right when viewing white or grey backgrounds. Now this is very slight and if you showed most people what I'm talking about, they would probably think I'm crazy. I notice it though and that is enough to consider replacing it.

My question to everyone is whether the green/red tint is something that goes away in time, or is this something that will be around for the life of the monitor? I know this is seen in the HP version of the panel occasionally and is sometimes seen in other IPS panels as well.

my experience is exactly the same -- everything is perfect except for a nasty green to red tint (left to right). this is not a subtle defect if one's plan is to use the monitor for color critical work. i just got off the phone for a replacement.

interestingly, i inspected the screen quite closely the first night and didn't see it. it wasn't until day 2 that i noticed the problem (after calibration) and it seems like it's actually been increasingly more noticeable since then. i don't know whether this is a cognitive effect or whether the panel is actually getting worse with burn-in, but w/e, that's what the excellent dell warranty policy is for.

it does seem like an LG manufacturing characteristic for the lower grade panels that are in the doublesights, dells and HPs. the one doublesight i briefly had last year had an extreme red cast on the left side of the screen.
 
Sorry if if this has been asked millions of times. Iam looking at getting this screen for gaming (pc and consoles) Has this screen got ghosting. Whats it like for gaming.

How's this screen for web design use? I'm replacing my NEC 2470WNX for this one ... let's see ... i got the monitor for 754 USD ( I'm from Portugal ) ... it will arrive next week.
 
I'm coming from a Dell 2005FPW, like user "niknakk," and wondering how this U2410 compares (if at all) with the 2005FPW? There's talk about this U2410 having a "grainy" panel. Like "niknakk" before me, I too wish to know how if the 2005FPW has a "grainy panel," b/c like him I don't see (or notice) it.

For color, the 2005FPW has oversaturated reds (pure red is almost neon red) and greens (VERY neon green). What about the U2410? Same deal? Is it better or worse? Would be very, VERY sad if the 2005FPW still - after being on the market for 4 years now - triumphs against this new and "improved" 24" model.

Like others here, I too am also curious about comparisons between this and the HP 2745w.
 
Still waiting on my order...been one full week since my order. Still not shipped...doh. Estimated ship date: today but don't think it's gonna happen...3:20 pm already. Oh well.

Smokey z, why don't you just use your graphics card's settings to reduce the green cast a bit in sRGB?
 
Another question. I installed the profile and the drivers (windows 7) provided in the dvd but when i try to open a photo with photoshop an error message shows up informing me that " The monitor profile "dell u2410' appears to be deffective please rerun your monitor callibration software"

If i press use anyway the photos look VERY greeny. The same happens when i browse photos through windows gallery.
What ive done wrong?

Well, I'm from Portugal and i'm waiting for one unity U2010f too, but i payed a little more here in Portugal, 670€ :mad:
How you got that price? Send PM please.
 
My replacement is going to be here tomorrow and I'm hoping it will be problem free. The one I have now is extremely fucked.

The menu buttons have never worked and now it doesn't want to turn off when I hit the power button or enter sleep mode when I turn off my computer. I can't get it to shut off at all, I have to unplug it when I'm done using it.
 
Hey guys I'm coming from a 5 year old Dell 2005FPW and I haven't bought another monitor SINCE because I absolutely love IPS.

I can say for certain that the Dell u2410 has met expectations and is the official sequel to 2005FPW. I absolutely love this monitor.

White is white, and Black is black. It's beautiful, I love the control panel, the height is just right, the amount of input selection is incredible and hopefully this will last me another 5 years.

I have the 2005FPW and 2410 side by side and only now have I noticed that my 2005FPW is not as bright as it used to be lol. Good times, and I give this monitor a 10/10.

Oh, no graininess here.

Just tested the color profile that comes with the software in the U2410 package. One word; horrible. Don't use it.
 
Wow u guys are some picky bastards!

So deputed having a larger pixel pitch than the 2007WFP, this panel looks pretty clear with txt and stuff? How's the input lag? Does it vary from mode to mode? I'd hate to be forced into choosing between color and lag. Sure would be nice if those options were available in some custom mode.

Hi, I received mine 2 hours ago. Previously I had LG W2600HP 26" IPS and now this 24" seems smaller. :)
Anyway, I like the blacks, I keep it in sRGB mode, but I don't like that in Lagom black level test (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php) all the blacks are displayed with grain and I can see them from square #6. I use brightness 50 / contrast 50.
What can I do to skip that grain but also to maintain sRGB color ?

It's made on 12 June 2009, made in Czech Republic, rev. A00

lol, well it's the closest thing to it anyways. Black is black as far as I can tell. If I turn the monitor off it's as black as that :)

I spoke to soon though, I found a bright red dead/stuck pixel in the top right corner of the screen. Called Dell they are sending a replacement. Kinda sucks cause EVERYTHING ELSE on it was perfect.
 
On Redeyerob's suggestion I tried tweaking my video card's RGB gain settings while using the Dell's sRGB preset. With a little work, I've been able to remove the green cast that was unacceptable. Now I have the U2410 in sRGB mode side by side with my NEC 20wmgx2, and the colors look pretty darn close between the two. Photos look equally good on the Dell and NEC. :) This is good since I've been trying for some time to find a monitor that looks as good as the 20wmgx2.
As I mentioned before, in actually viewing photos, I don't find the dithering to be noticeable.
 
Bummer, I just thought you guys were referring to the sparkly anti glare coating like on my 2007WFP.
 
Hmm, TFT central didn't test the input lag using the game mode setting. Quite disconcerting.
