U.S. Internet Speeds Causing Digital Divide?

you guys need to post some long distance shots. screw this 50 mile crap!

Right ON, purefun65! I don't trust TimeWarner when they come out here and run
a test from my place to LinkLine (it's about 25-30 miles, TOPS!) So I ran both
DSL reports test to both LinkLine in Los Angeles and to NetAccess in New Jersey!

dsl reports using linkline
(Los Angeles to Los Angeles)
08967kb/sec download, 00941kb/sec upload

dsl Reports using NetAccess
(Los Angeles to New Jersey)
03694kb/sec download, 00955kb/sec upload

Then I went over to SpeedTest.net and ran two tests: (LA to LA, and LA to Cincinatti, OH)

speedtest.net
Los Angeles to Los Angeles

speedtest.net
Los Angeles to Cincinatti, OH

(I hope I cut and pasted the right stuff, kinda new to this...hmmm the dsl reports links
don't work - what did I do wrong?)

Comcast Blast $70

buts its okay as I am able to decrypt a shit load of QAM hd channels so that $70 also get me all my HD and Digital TV.

Uh, sheesh: forgot the most important stuff (sorta)
TimeWarner Road Slogg..er, RoadRunner.
I think I'm paying $29.99/month.

Hey, how come there's no option for me to go back and EDIT my own post?

Am I picking the wrong posting option (quote, multi-quote, quick reply) I picked quote.
I could preview it, but once it was posted there's no option to go back and "edit" my post.
I seem to remember sometimes there IS an option to "edit this post" once it's up,
and even a space where you can enter "why I'm editing this post" (if you want to say)

Haaaalp this noob out! btw this is a "quick reply"

Cuz its always funny.

ping between partition C and partition D is more than that

Lucky Americans  I pay 70USD for 4MBit :(

Damn, something tells me this is BS:

Also, I pay about $100 and that includes my landline. Something tells me I need to look into something else.

...$49.99 a month...

Sadly it is the only provider in my area, next to shitty ATT DSL... However Metrocast is supposed to be starting a fiber service later this year..

Yeaahhh.......... What's funny is that you either photo shopped that shit or your paying a mortgage for those types of ludicrous speeds. Either tell us what you have IN DETAIL motherf*cker or that shit didn't happen.

Yeah, I'm hating... so what??

Not hard with most server colocations, especially if they host for speedtest.net....

You're telling me most colos can support sub 5ms pings @ ~1000 miles?

BTW, good point, if people are testing their colo servers and posting them as their "home" connection or otherwise, thats BS.

I don't think the image is photo shopped, since the link points to Speedtest.net as the host...

I'm at work so I can't post my speedtest, but:

South St. Paul, MN
Comcast Cable
$60 / Month

21.21 Mb Down
8.35 Mb Up

what is the point of having fiber optic fios if there is cable internet that is faster and cheaper? isn't fiber optic meant for gig speeds? my cable internet is twice as fast as people with fiber wtf

With or without "speed boost" which is usually only good for the first 5 megs or so.

Looks like my general notion is true. Dense Urban areas seem pay more per MB than us rural folks, even if they have a faster connection. Guess when your customer's literally live next door you don't want to rip them off?

BTW, $43 for 5Mb down 512Kb up in rural-ish Ohio. And about every 6 months I get a gifcertificate to a nice restaurant worth $25, effecitevly giving me a month of free internet service.

AT&T DSL 3 meg down / 512k up. ~25 bucks.

I can get u-verse but I hear the latency sucks and that will not do for gaming.

In regards to the digital divide, when I accidentaly cut my line with a backhoe, whoops, I spoke at length with the service tech, the owner's son. He said they would not be participating in the Broadband Stimulus because the fees and papework were to costly.

Ohio dishes out areas to teleco's like they were little fifedoms, and apparently the Duke of Verizon has a big Swath of land. The local co-ops investigated laying our their own fiber but were told it would not be possible since Verizon currently has so much 'dark' fiber servicing our 'area.'

He also mentioned that Verizon had recieved stimulus money for our area to build more "middle-man" fiber between the Hub city of Cleveland and our rural providers, but they want to charge $100/mb, currently we pay $30/mb, so again my provider will not be upgrading service.

On the otherhand, us poor folks in the flyover states usually get same-day tech service and probably never have to hold when calling tech support. And I wonder if we suffer the same oversubscribtion ratio as denser areas?

Cox NoVA

25/3 - $60 a month.

They just came out with a ridiculously priced DOCSIS 3 plan. 50/5. Only $150 a month.

So the story is right. Speeds, and greed, make us the problem.

We can put people in space, yet third-world countries have faster, more reliable and cheaper net access.

I have a friend that travels to Holland a lot. They laugh at us when he describes our internet situation.

Oh, and no, I did not mean to imply that Holland is a third-world country before someone gets their panties in a bunch LOL

lol, its a dedi through Gameservers.com. Notice how I said cuz its always funny. I was also running 15 game servers at the time of that picture, my bandwidth is usually just a tad above 100/100 on it. Choopa has a hell of a network in Dallas at the moment.

:p

Dial-up here in western Maine. $25/mo from TDS Telecom, along w/ $45/mo for basic phone service. My Father has HughesNet, and it's not bad but storms and/or snow knock it out. $70/mo for 180kB downloads.

because the cable around here has shit upload. and i guess none of us is as smart as you. even tho there is cable internet that is "faster and cheaper" none of us can figure that out, so we are stuck with slow and expensive fiber. so, thanx for the heads-up. and so your download is 10mbs faster than mine. that and 10 bucks will get you a pack of marlboro here in nyc.

Provider: Comcast
Advertised Speed: 6/1
Location: Auburn Hills, MI
Cost: $42/mo (Service Only I own my Modem)

Speed from Auburn Hills, MI to San Jose, CA

basically what I'm asking is...

[shitty_analogy]

why is verizon building a ferrari that only goes 15 mph

[/shitty_analogy]

Comcast - Pittsburgh, PA
$49.95 (part of package)
16/4 - typically can stream 1200 kbs down

occasionally 60 down 20 up when I decide to hook up some of the other modems I have into my multi-wan setup.

The real question is, why is Comcast building one that has a 3 gallon tank that you're only allowed to fill up once a month?

well to the average user that 3 gallons is plenty.. but for the people that torrent and do the illegal activities and such... its kinda easy for them to bypass that :D

I was part of the Warhammer Online Closed Beta team and the client was passed around by torrent. It was 10gigs. I just want to make sure you realize not all torrents are illegal. This is one of the reasons I stopped using TimeWarner. As soon as they made the announcment that in Austin Tx they were going to try a new price scale on usage, I switched to U-Verse. They initially said it would be about $100 if you download 10gigs a month. The reason was to combat Heavy Bandwith users, blaming Torrents as enemy #1.
I feel price should be based on speed not usage.
