CCCP (or Combined Community Codec Pack) is probably the most popular package out there (particularly for anime fans) for video playback. I've personally used VLC for years and have never had a problem with it, although I know many people HATE it for whatever reason (still don't understand why though).

Now that VLC is in 1.0, would anyone say it's any better or comparable to CCCP?

Or, if you hate both CCCP and VLC, list what you use.

Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, of course. Nothing else even comes close. Coupled with Windows 7... well... you'll figure it out. :D

I have VLC installed, but don't use it much anymore as I got sick of it. I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema instead.

When I load a video in VLC, the audio always starts playing before the video is buffered and things get out of sync and the video gets all pixelated. Then, I have to rewind and start from the beginning of the video and things will be fine. With MPC, it just works, so I use it instead.

Also, I used to think VLC's GUI was simplistic and nice. Now, I think it's hideous and can't really stand it. Its playlist service discovery stuff is quite buggy now and trancoding things or dumping streams was always kind of buggy.

VLC's audio playback is pretty bad. So is MPC's though. Foobar is way better for that.

I'd rather just use foobar and have it play videos (it could with a plugin at one point, not sure now).

Just for the people that don't know, CCCP comes with MPC-HC + ffdshow. I love CCCP and it is the only thing I use.

MPC - Home Cine

single .exe with no installer... plays everything. nuff said.

Yeah I figured people knew that, but I based on the posts I guess not. Are there skins for MBC? The default one is so ugly.

Also, has anyone messed around with K-Lite? Is it even comparable to CCCP or VLC?

No offense, but when I'm watching a video with MPC-HC I'm not focusing on the skin of the app. :)

If I was running Vista, it would be the Vista Codec Pack + MPC-HC, of course; if I was running XP or XP Pro x64 anymore, it would be FFDShow + MPC-HC, simple.

Some of us don't want outdated software and stuff that we don't need (VSFilter, Zoom Player).

The latest CCCP appears to come with ffdshow r2133 and Media Player Classic HomeCinema r796. The current versions are ffdshow r3026 and Media Player Classic HomeCinema r1164. Haha, now that's a lot of version numbers behind. Oh, and CCCP comes with an outdated version of Haali too.

For comparison purposes, the current K-Lite Codec Pack 4.9.5 includes ffdshow r3018 and Media Player Classic HomeCinema 1.2.1005.0 (I guess that translates to r1210 for you?). Seems like CCCP hasn't been updated since September 21, 2008 while K-Lite was updated June 29, 2009.

Based on that, I'd think K-Lite is better at this time, and wonder whether CCCP is in fact still active.

MPC - Home Cinema, CoreAVC Professional and Haali Media Splitter.

Used to us CCCP. Retired it though due to the lack of updates. Now it's just ffdshow and MPC-HC.

K-lite Mega Codec Pack - newest version has problems opening some Apple formats, should be fixed seen enough.

No, 1.2.1005.0 translates to r1005... pretty old. Point is, if you want the latest versions, you need to download them yourself. And while K-Lite may be more up to date than CCCP, it's bloated as hell. I say just download the few things you need seperately instead of a bundle of stuff, most of which you'll never use.

I used to use CCCP on XP. With Win7, I use MPC-HC with CoreAVC for x264 playback.

Never liked VLC... g15 media buttons didn't work.. didn't like the interface. Great program... just rubbed me the wrong way.

No codec Packs, no extra players.

I grab individual filters based on need, and manually register them so they integrate with Vista Media Center, and WMP.

MPC is ok for bluray. So far VLC 1.0 is god.

I personally can't agree.

Since upgrading to VLC 1.0, I experience program crashes when trying to skip ahead in MKV movies using the scanbar. Using CCCP in Win7, these MKV files play flawlessly and don't crash when I skip ahead. VLC 0.9.9 played these files perfectly.

Note: I use MakeMKV beta to create the files.

k-lite has treated me well and I like the regular updates. also using MPC cause I like old school looking skin.

Shark007's codec pack on Windows 7 here - when I originally switched to Vista x64 I spent ages tearing my hair out in codec hell, and the Shark007 package was the first that enabled me to play back everything I had without issues. It's served me well ever since, so no need to use anything else.

I use Windows Media Center and MPC Homecinema for playback, but still keep VLC around as a fallback in case of the odd weird encoding which won't play on the others for whatever reason. :)

MPC-HC + CoreAVC + Haalis

Why you would use anything else is beyond me. VLC is crap and codec packs are so 1999.

The 5.0 version of a pile of shit isn't any better than the 1.0 version, just so you know.

Good for you, I hope you release that this thread is about personal preference and that was pretty much just a troll comment you just made. Above you'll see that there are quite a few people with an opinion contrary to your own, and none of them have thus far said flat out "you suck" or CCCP or VLC "suck". The only flaming pile of shit I smell is...

I use shark's Vista Codecs, I realize codec packs aren't popular here, but eh, I mean I just install Vista Codecs + x64 package, and everything plays in WMP and VMC, nothing to complain about.
