The New EVE: Apocrypha

Ninja salvaging is legit but a kill flag would be nice to promote more PvP, or at least add some spice to stealing someone else's stuff. It doesn't make sense that loot is flagged but wrecks are not.

What would really be nice is doing away with jump gates entirely.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm thinking now that my next goal is going to be getting effective at bounty stealing from mission runners. Just 'cause, you know, ninja salvaging doesn't piss people off enough, might as well get something with a nice high alpha strike to get the last shot in on rats... The idea makes me smile too much to ignore :D My one fear is that after playing EVE, with all its myriad, inventive ways to make people hate you, I'll never be happy with a friendlier MMORPG...

Oh, and OldPueblo - nice video! I read about that in the EVE forums, but man, sweet stuff. Trippy effects for awhile there, too.

Ive been gone for awhile...works been way to slow....lost my internet connection. The whole time I was gone, I could not stop thinking about this game. Just flying thru space is so kickass....I logged in the other night and had this feeling...like...ahhhh...Im back.

I have not had this type of feeling for a game in so long...I cant even remember what game it was that had me so compelled to play it...Im just speechless.....Ive missed my EVE....

Hey guys...I have a couple of friends that I have gotten interested in playing EVE. We've been bouncing emails back and forth and they have been asking some questions, one of which, I wasnt totally certain of.

That question is...If they download the game, but decide to be a different race than what I am (Gallante), would we still be able to play the game together as friends in the game, or would they be enemies?

I told them I was pretty sure we could all still roam around together, but then, I know certain races are at war with one another, so I wasnt quite positive on my answer.

So, how does that play out? Lets say they wanted to be Amarr and Im Gallante, are we going to be shooting things and working together or shooting eachother, heh.

Thanks

SAW,
You can still work together in all of the PVE and PVP content. . Race isn't that big of a deal in this game.

Cool cool...good to hear. I will pass on the info, thanks.

Actually there are no race restrictions for faction warfare that I'm aware of. Race basically is nothing in EVE other then what little you start out with.

Now that I think about that, you're right. I'm going crazy.

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

To those of you who play EVE or have played:
Is it necessary to be very commited to play this game to enjoy it or can you have a more casual/relaxed approach and still feel you are getting your moneys worth ?

It's working out pretty well for me and I'm a 'forced casual' (my-wife-wears-the-pants ;) ) user. In EVE grinding is mostly optional and your character has a skill queue that allows you to continue to advance while you're offline. Intelligent use of your newbie period (2x training, use it well) will get you learning skills + bonus learning--I'd suggest starting the game, training all of your learning skills up ASAP and then try and train frigate V and cruiser V in the race of your choice. I don't have a ton of ISK in game but if you want, convo 'NexExigo' in-game (that's me) and I'll hook you up with some ISK or the skillbooks for the advanced learning skills.

If you can get your learning skills up as well as Cruiser V by the time you lose your 2x training rate you'll thank me. Cruiser V (and Frig V) opens up the door for all sorts of fun ships.

You need ISK (money) but that's fairly easy to come by.

You'll probably want high standings so you can install jump clones but if you find a corporation, you may be able to use the corporate standings (or your corp might have clone vats).

I haven't played any other MMO but EVE seems to be very different than anything else. The only investment I really had to make was three or four hard weeks of intense learning and that was simply pleasure.

I only need 2 learning skills at level 5, then I have all at level 5...figured out pretty fast that traning learning skills first would be beneficial in the long run.

Besides those skill takes tkakes weeks to train...they really allow for casual gaming ;)

Thanks for your reply eggrock
I didn't understand much you were saying though....lol

Read thru this.....BOOKMARK this page....it will give you the basics of EVE and what to do once you begin. http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/About_EVE_Online

And yes....this game is as casual as you want it to be, or as labor intensive as you want it to be. Enjoy the game for the sake of having FUN....Do NOT play this game if you are wanting to WORK HARD to have fun. If that makes sense.

First, there is no such thing as TL;DR in EVE, see below. :D

There are something like 130 different skills in the game and each applies to a specific task or allows you to access different things as well as do those things better or more efficiently. For example, training the learning skills increases your character's attributes such as Intelligence or Willpower, and all of the skills' training time are affected by your attributes. It is generally accepted that training your learning skills is the most efficient way to advance your character.

Skills also have what is called a 'rank', which is a number that multiplies the time it takes to learn a skill. Thus, a 'rank 1' skill trains at a normal rate while a 'rank 3' skill takes three times longer to train. Skills of higher rank are generally dependent upon training lower ranked skills to a certain level. Also, each skill starts at level 0 (you don't know it at all) but can be trained to level 5 (which is usually represented by the Roman numeral V). Training a skill from level 0 to level 1 takes a much shorter amount of time than training a skill from IV to V.

Finally, your training speed is doubled until you reach 1.6 million skill points (SP). Using that time wisely is very imporant but it won't kill your character if you train badly (but being efficient and smart is key in EVE). From what I've read it used to be possible to ruin your character depending on the race and class of your character. Now it makes almost no difference (other than where you start out in the game.)

I won't get into the exact formula and all of the dependencies but it's vital to learn the basics, and it is important early on to get into bigger ships so you can run higher level (harder) missions and earn more ISK. Once you have enough ISK you can branch out and really start having fun. You must also buy skill books for each of the skills and some are expensive. It's not a steep requirement, and completing all of the tutorials will give you several free ships and (I think) even some implants which will raise each attribute by 1 (implants raise on attribute from 1 to 5 with the level 5 implants being quite expensive. You also cannot remove them so if your clone is killed you will need to buy and replace any implants you want to wear.)

The Frigate and Cruiser skills allow you to fly frigates and cruisers, respectively. Frigates are small, fast ships--and speed in EVE is very useful. Cruisers are larger and more powerful than frigates but they are also slower. The next step up are battlecruisers (which might be a small ship of the line in old-fashioned naval terms) and then the battleship which is the mainstay of battles. Destroyers are specialized ships meant to kill frigates and are about twice the mass of a frigate (and smaller than a cruiser). There is a frigate/destroyer/cruiser/bc/bs skill for each race.

All of these base hull types are called "tech 1" ships, and "tech 2" ships are specialized versions of these basic hulls. Some have more powerful weapons and/or defenses, others are meant for stealthy (cloaked) operations and so on. There are 133 ships based on frigate-to-battleship hulls and each race specializes in a certain type of ship:

Caldari: Long range (but less powerful) and missile ships with shield defenses

Amarr: Lasers (tending towards short range, I think) with armor defenses

Gallente: Hybrid turrets (similar to guns) with heavy drone (mobile gun) use and armor-ish defenses

Minmatar: Projectile turrets (similar to guns), favoring speed and with a mix of drone use, armor and shield defenses. Minmatar ships are considered 'hard mode' due to the high skill requirements but you get a very nice range of choices, and once you train Minmatar you can train other races quite easily.

Pick your race. Caldari is considered bad for soloing (but great for small gang and support roles) and the other three are--dunno, really. There is a lot to consider and no single race stands out.

I recommend training Frigate/Cruiser to V because it will open up a wide range of ships that you can train for. Cruiser is a rank 5 skill and takes a long time to train--19.5 days in my case and my supporting attributes are high--it may take you upwards of 22 days to train. There are a lot of supporting skills that you'll also need, but nearly all of them are rank 3 and under and only need to be trained up to level IV in some cases. This strategy is arguable and the key is avoiding PvP entirely because your supporting skills will suck.

Whatever you do, TRAIN THE LEARNING SKILLS FIRST. The most important skills for learning speed and fitting ships are Intelligence and Memory. The most important skills for learning to fly new ships are Perception and Willpower. Charisma is used for leadership type stuff (wing commanders, corporation CEOs, trading and so on). There are some other skills like R&D and manufacturing that are an entirely different part of EVE.

You are allowed to 'remap' your attributes twice--DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. This is a powerful way to allow you to train faster and if used properly you can cut months off your training time. Once you use your second remap you must wait for one year before you can remap again--I wasted one remap and I really miss it.

This is--a drop in the bucket. There is simply so much to know and do in EVE.

The current leader in "number of skills trained" has 390, and he's missing a handful that either no longer spawn in game, are developer-only, or similar. Not really relevant, as there's very little point in trying to get anywhere near that variety.

Eh, close enough. Somewhat more in depth version of the differences in races and ship classes. Should be noted on the range issue that Projectiles, Hybrid Turrets, Lasers, and Missiles all have long range and short range versions, so you can find a ship that works for the range you want to fight at, regardless of race. Caldari are "the sniper race" because they've got a good sniper ship at every hull size, and one of the best sniper ships period.

Pick your race. Caldari is considered bad for soloing (but great for small gang and support roles) and the other three are--dunno, really. There is a lot to consider and no single race stands out.

Bad for solo PVP, maybe, but they're the kings of solo PVE. Just sayin'...

There it is.. I didn't take the time to look it up--and I can't hit any EVE related website from work.

Yeah, long/short range, agility, cap use, slots, damage types, transversal, explosion radius/velocity--if I get a block of time big enough to write that tutorial I'll probably go play EVE instead. ;)

Caldari is super easy for PVE--I didn't know any better, picked Caldari and now I might as well stick with it long enough to get into some of the T2 ships. Gallente would be a natural switch when I go PVP but those high speed Minmatar ships are calling my name.

I havent played long enough to understand quite what it is thats going on here. What is "Freeform" and why will people be upset about this.

As opposed to normal player created contracts (say, for the trade or for transporting goods from one system to another), which automatically succeeded if the conditions were met, freeform contracts needed the contract creator to say that the contract was successfully finished (or that it had failed). In theory, this let people do things like create contracts to enlist people for scout duties or similar - stuff that a normal contract really couldn't quantify. However, since the collateral system meant there was no risk for the issuer of the contract, it was really, really foolish in almost all circumstances for anyone to accept a freeform, as the issuer could say that the contract was failed as soon as it was accepted, and keep the collateral. One of the common forms was the double-ISK scam ("I'm leaving EVE, I've sold my main, but I want to give away my ISK. Tell me how much you have, I'll create a freeform contract with you, and I'll give you double your ISK. You just have to put down the collateral, but it'll come back to you immediately... Oops I said you failed, now I'm keeping your money!").

*shrug* Virtually no one used them for anything beyond scams, anyway, so no big loss.

I always liked the Basilisk as a great addition to any team. If your large-scale group is all armor tankers then you likely want to go with a Guardian instead (which is what I piloted far more often) but the fundamentals are the same! Caldari has some nice ships--if you want to do E-War the Blackbird and the Scorpion are both fantastic ships, and I've piloted both in to large-scale fleet battles and knocked out a LOT of enemy targeting in a very short period of time!

Don't knock the support roles, having an E-War ship present can make a HUGE difference in a fight! If the enemy can't target you, they can't blow you up. ;)

I had a couple of buddies join me in EVE the other night, we were using Ventrillo for voice talk. Whenever I would change my view screen from the regular HUD to the map screen, all sound and voice would go silent. The game itself never paused or anything and I was still able to play just fine. When I would leave the map screen, it would take about 30 seconds before sound would come back on again.

This was only happening to me, they were able to go into other game views without anything weird happening.

I figure Ive got something unchecked/checked that either shouldnt be, or should be....Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

using F10 to view map? I'd say possibly got that bound to somthing odd in vent / sound card / eve voice even?

im not sure if its been said or not, but im not going to start another thread on it cuz i dont really care enough to write anything interesting.

but yea, BOB is really actually finally dead for reals this time. BOB (kenzoku) has broken up quite a bit. RKK went and joined faction warfare. Black nova corp and DICE are gone. Evol is still sticking around for a short period of time.

anyway, who cares? 0.0 is boring compared to high sec griefing. Can't even safely use your high grade pirate implants in 0.0 without risking losing them on every gate jump.

i have really been enjoying the passed few weeks. The corp that I am in has successfully decced and caused several corp's and alliances to completely fold. Currently I am in the middle of picking apart Intrepid Crossing.

really been having a great time in eve recently.

Nope, not using F10....I am usually playing the game in the dark, so I use the mouse pointer to click on things mostly. such as the View Map Icon on the left hand side. My Vent. is routed to the Left Shift Key for Push to Talk. Works absolutely fine, untill I go to view the map for probing. Docking at a station, viewing the Market, etc etc, all works fine. Its just when viewing the Map screen that I loose all sound, be it voice or ingame music/sounds. It all goes silent.

That sounds pretty interesting!!! I LOVE the risk this game instills upon ya. You just really dont know what lies around the corner.

I havent gotten far enough into the game to even be close to doing any real warfare yet, but im looking forward to it. Heh, its funny.....to me, whenever I see the word BoB, I cant help but to think of that movie What About Bob with Bill Murry. I see posts saying BoB is dead and I start thinking....Oh no....What About Bob.....LOL.

btw saw, have you tried using f10 to view the map? maybe that'd work and not kill your sound, but probably not. im gonna go do some quick research and see if i can come up with something. sounds really weird, but i do remember some people have various issues with having the map screen open.

Thx Bro...I really appreciate that. Im one of them search engine dumbasses. I wouldnt even know how to begin to search for an answer to this problem, so again, I do appreciate your efforts :)

I will try hitting F10 next time and see if that works. And to be clear....this oddity with the sound only happened when I used Vent. When in the game and not using Vent, everything works fine.

just to check to see whats actually being effected, have you tried playing some music in the background in winamp/itunes and seeing if that gets effected by viewing the map? also, do you have that little box checked in your control panel under sounds that gives applications full control or priority over sound?

i dont have access to the control panel right now as i am at work, otherwise id be more specific.

SAW... random punt here... but from the 1.3 patchnotes
"User Interface : The starmap has been fixed and stars will no longer vanish when zooming in and out."

possibly caused an issue, especially if only happened since the release.

If you can verify its just with vent running (and not say Winamp or try teamspeak) & can't find anything related to soundcard - I would probably try a Ventrilo re-install first as thats generally less painful than the next step.... which would be to test and then followed by a EVE reinstall if no luck. (export overview settings first !) Which is more painful, but many people recommend clean installs after patches anyway, especially buggy ones.

Eve general - yea also been really enjoying it lately. I'm in Amarr FW, which got a bit blobby and tiresome (standoffs & lag), but corp has recently stepped it up and now running smaller, tighter hac/recon gangs which is a shedload of fun :).

looking forward to seeing RKK join the minnies if they manage the standings grind, more competent targets should make interesting times. FW is good fun, easy to get into and caters for a variety of different skill levels/play types without all the politics/bubbles/pos bashing of 0.0. no one turns down an interceptor/tackler from their gang, these are fairly affordable and easily skilled for and imo a really good place to learn pvp side of game.

Well... I'm stuck in a wormhole. Have been for over a week now. J123831. It's an "easy" one, no battleships or anything, and I can solo most of the stuff I come across... But I'll run out of ammo here very soon, I have about 2500 rounds left, I came in with around 8000.

It's an interesting story I suppose, a buddy and myself were scouting it out, and headed off to take out some little sleepers, just for a change of pace. We made it in, jumped around a bit, killed a bunch of sleepers, then I finished salvaging as he headed back to the wormhole. When he got through it, he received a message about how he was lucky to make it through, because it collapsed as he arrived to K-Space, about the time he was jumping back into Erme, I was arriving at what was the wormhole. I say was, because by the time I completed the warp the wormhole shrunk up and disappeared. It was gone, and there I was, stuck.

Needless to say, I've seen -someone- else in here with scanners, but they didn't respond in local and so here I sit. I have plenty of time before I need to go back to K-Space, but it would sure be nice to make it back before Aug 8.

Anyway, I love EVE. Fantastic game. As my friend reminded me, if I suicide, it'd be the "easy" way out, meanwhile, sticking it out and appreciating the fact that I am literally stranded is far more exciting. I check a few times a day, and when I find anomalies I go and attack the Sleepers (46 kills!) or just explore the sites. It could be worse!

Maybe it was the patch, I dunno. I havent used Ventrillo in well over a year. This was the first time ive had time to actually schedual some gaming time with some of my buds. We used Vent all the time, just not any time recently. Perhaps there is a Vent upgrade out there I havent recieved or downloaded that would help???

Interesting scenario.

So, what are going to do if your still stuck there and you run out of ammo? I guess you would only have the one option at that point, ehh? Let us know if you manage to get out and how you got out.

I'm not too worried about running out of ammo, I'm much more worried about getting out before August 8th. August 8th is when I have to purchase a skillbook to continue my training, so that's the deadline. It's pretty easy to avoid fighting in a wormhole, not so much to stop training. I do also have a nice chunk of goods from all of my exploits out here, and I don't feel like replacing all of my implants either, so yeah... I'll be sure to post when I get out.. It's a lonely place when you're all alone.

Heh, I bet you'll never go to another wormhole without your own probes again, ehh :)

Whats really going to suck is if you run out of room in your cargo hold and can no longer loot the things you kill. Oh yeah, btw, do you still get paid from agents when you kill something in wormhole space? My guess is that you cant, cause how would the paying agent know you killed anything? Or am I wrong and you go get paid?

No, there are no bounties and as far as i know there are no missions in wormhole space. But, I do get paid in sweet sweet loots. I've been sitting fairly steady so far with cargo room, balancing ammo spent with loots gathered. Still have over 100m3 so I should be just fine.

Wait for other people to finish WH sites.

Kill them. Take their shit.

It's much easier than doing the sites themselves :)
