I don't know if anyone is denying that driver awareness doesn't play a part, but if we take that out, then the higher speed is more dangerous.

The government of whatever nation isn't going to check the awareness of every single driver, ever single minute they are driving. It's simply easier to enforce a minimum/maximum speed limit.

Cause you never know when the driver doing 100 mph ends up not bothering to be aware of the conditions and react accordingly.

Just because some people can't be aware , it doesn't mean that everyone must not drive faster than these people. It doesn't mean that if someone is driving faster than the allowed limit, he is doing something stupid and wrong. What I said before, there is nothing wrong with speeding if you have safety in mind. You don't need to be fast to be able drive off a cliff and kill yourself, you just need to be stupid.

Hahahaha, wow. You actually dared to pull that one.

I tell you what. If you ever managed to get to my town (if your extreme racing skills dont get you killed)... give me a buzz. I'll be more than happy to take you down to the track and school you like you have not seen.

Who said I had racing skills? I said I have self responsibility. Any why would you want to drive fast next to anyone? Isn't that stupid and will get you and them killed? :p

You seem like you are one of those arrogant cocky people you always see end up in a pole because they thought that their fartcan can pull great performance and handling.

Actually my car has a v8 and I get "challenged" by spiky haired kids in 4 banger fartcans with shopping cart handles all the time. I ignore them.

My freedom is there for me to enjoy, not for idiot drivers like you to take it away from me by ending my life.

Wait.... so you get freedom, but because other people do things you don't approve of, they should not have freedom? Ok........

lmfao. wow. keep going. If you hit a bridge at 80 that you couldn't miss at 160 I feel for you. Hell if you hit a bridge at 80 at all I feel for you. I guess this must be your drivin style.... if you can't make it at 160, then no one can make it at 80.... great logic again.

The make sense train just left the station. Guess you weren't on it....

LOL. I made the mistake of driving by a movie theater just as the last "fast and furious" movie let out. OMG. The stupid. It hurt.

I'm sitting at the light in my V8 supercharged redneck sedan, my valentine one is freaking out and some punk pulls up and starts reving his fearsome civic fartcan. The ligt turns green and he takes off and "smokes" me. I proceed at a stately, legal manner in time to see Smoky pull his ass over. :D

Moral of the story: kids are fucking stupid. I was stupid at that age.

Note to self: never let boys drive dads redneck monster. They can make do with moms civic hybrid. Bwahahahahahahaha.

ROFL I had that exact same scenario happen to me only that I egged him on. I had seen that car in the past *small town* and the driver is a asshole. He most likely got busted for doing around 50 in a 25. All I can say is thank god for the V1.

Everybody's opinion is so varied and it seems like this thread has become more like a pissing contest except for the very well thought out posts. Speeding is a joy, however keeping mind in safety. Going 160 while trying to record your speed run by hand and impress some chick all generally ends in failure. Everybody knows situations can change in a matter of seconds. I myself have came close doing 140 into a back end of a semi. Lost a mirror scared the shit out of myself. Resumed driving, lesson learnt. Now I take it to the track. I still do speed but no where as fast as what I use to. Too many close calls in the city. Rather take it to a situation where can be some what be controlled, and EMT are always 'standing by.'

If you guys enjoyed that ;) here is me doing 250 Km/h or 155.3 mph.

I hit the top speed at 1:05 of the video.

Sorry, I did not crash.

Sorry, I did not crash.

The problem with certain people is that they don't think logically or with common sense.

Just because you went this speed and didn't crash doesn't mean you won't later.

Hey.. I was walking today and didn't trip on the sidewalk! But that doesn't mean it won't EVER happen.

Seriously dude.. you need to go back to driving school.

Nice, and you did the right thing, slowing down when there are cars around. See, there is nothing wrong with driving fast right?

Yes, speed is relative. The main thing is also that Germans in general are great highway drivers.

I tell you, driving there at 155mph felt much safer than driving in Canada or US at 60mph.

The wierd thing is that I passed a cop doing around 140mph, and I felt like I should have slowed down.

PS: to be clear, I dont drive like this in North America, except when I take it to the track.

Problem in the us is the cars are way too safe for natural selection to work properly and weed out the stupid:D

The Autobahn != US highway 151 where the douchebag in the article was going 160mph. Apples vs Oranges.

The biggest problem is that you're saying you can drive like a bat out of hell. You're not stopping to think about whether or not you should drive like a bat out of hell. By your justification, anyone can use their backyard for a pistol range as long as no one gets hurt. After all, there's no evidence a ricochet or an accident will happen.

im ok with speeding on the highway as long as its nothing too crazy and you're not trying to weave through cars and such
on streets its just dumb, even if you are doing fine other cars need a chance to get out driveways and such without having to worry about a speeder popping out of no where. And then it rarely even gets you anywhere faster with all the traffic llights and such.

When did I say you should do a 160mph on the US highway 151?

No one said speeding a little is bad.

Actually, many idiots in this thread overreacted to someone saying speeding isn't bad and took it as though the was saying this kid's speeding wasn't bad. Don't vouch for idiots unless you want to be made one yourself.

Whether they speed or not, doesn't mean speeding isn't reckless and dangerous. I speed every single day in my car. Those who do it, should know exactly how dangerous it is. I don't know how anyone can actually think differently.

I pray to God for forgiveness everytime my sin needle passes that holy speed limit number because I put the entire earth and especially all first born children and insurmountable risk everytime I do that durty deed.

Or I just drive safetly and very aware of those around me and watch out for idiots making illegal lane changes.

I see what type of person you are. I'm not going to bother responding anymore to your garbage.

You are the type of person who is a do nothing but blame me type of guy. Don't use any safety or structural or security mechanisms... if it fails and kills 20 or even 100 people, its my fault.

lets not protect others from my actions and let me be wreckless and careless, but if i screw up, lock me up... too bad for the people I just killed.

great logic you got going there

I think you need to take a few psychology lessons before you attempt to psychoanalyze someone by ignoring the blatant fact that they are polarizing the argument because everyone in this thread is polarizing the argument. Then, after you realize you are arguing with a thread full of hyperbole induced polarism, take a second to weed out the discussions of people screaming "no speeding ever!!!" at the ones who are screaming "no speed limits ever!!!".

THEN, you should calm the fuck down because you're trying to impress people in a thread where no one gives a fuck about your obvious attempts at intellectual superiority showcasing you're doing by using neverending streams fallacies, rhetoric, and disingenuous and loaded arguments.

Everyone else needs to calm the fuck down and use some rationality instead of jumping straight to exterme polar ends of these inane arguments as well.

Ill just post this from three pages behind because fuck trying to read through all of you idiots babble on and on, building stupid insults on top of each other's stupid and dimwitted, fallacious insults.

i'm one of those guys usually drives no faster than the speed limit. if it says 60km, i go 60km. i usually only go faster if i have a lineup of cars forming behind me and i'm getting tail gated on a road that isn't so populated.

i'm amazed at the looks people give me when i refuse to go faster than the speed limit. this one kid was riding my ass until finally saw an opening to change lanes and just sped right by me. he nearly clipped me changing lanes he was so close to me.

of course a red light was up ahead, so i caught up to him at the light and just looked over at him and he gave me the most angry glare.

why does it people some people off so much when i only go the speed limit? that i don't quite understand. the roads around here are definitely not designed for speed, and there's way too much traffic to speed safely.

Apparently everyone else commuting with you disagrees with you. You should point the microscope inwards.

I am glad the kid got what he deserved for being stupid enough to
1. Drive that fast without being able to control his vehicle properly
2. Allow friends to videotape him driving that fast
3. Posting the video on YouTube

Guess what, I live in Germany and speeding is really nothing here. We have Autobahn which is safe for speeding and we build cars with safety in mind.

Many highways in the USA are much nicer than the Autobahn here. The difference is neither the cars nor the roads, but the level of driving education/training. There is a reason why obtaining a driver's license costs more than USD 1,500 in Germany compared to ~USD 250 in the USA.

So you are saying that you have the right to stay on the fast lane and others should not overtake you since you are already driving at the speed limit?

If you want to buy some land of your own that you will maintain and set aside an emergency fund to cover any emergency expenses that might be incurred by your recklessness, then by all means do what you want. So long as you are driving on public roads though, you have to abide by the guidelines set up by that society, or you cannot claim to be responsible.

That was weird..the first 3 paragraphs were missing from that. Grr to not being able to edit.

The problem with driving to fast is it makes a lot of assumptions and is very hopeful. I hope nothing happens that distracts me at a bad moment. I hope that nothing unexpected happens. You are assuming that because you can see for miles around you nothing could go wrong, or you will see it going wrong before it's too late.

It is easy to say that you will take responsibility for your actions, but society establishes rules to protect the good of society. If you are driving and something unexpected happens and you kill someone else, there really is no way for you to make up for that. So, there are preventative measures in place. because society says that it is better to slightly restrict one freedom to better ensure the safety of the people than to allow some members to do whatever they want and place the whole in danger.

That said. I do not think that speeding is inherently bad or deadly. But as with any risky behavior it needs to be done at the right time, in the right place and in the right way. Driving on public roads at any time of day, regardless of whether there are people that you can see around or not...is not right...ever, the potential cost is way too high.

So you think it is safer for you to make irrational people mad and angry, especially while they are driving next to you?

If there is a crash, it will be his RESPONSIBILITY; however, you did nothing to defuse the situation in fact you encouraged it. There will always be idiots and morons, but to pretend that you have no blame after you have deliberately enraged those idiots is shameless. If he was passing you on the right, that means you could have been in the right lane without any harm to your travel time.

I have no problem if you only go the speed limit, but my blood will boil if you're clogging up the left lane. Stay to the right and we won't have a problem. It's rude and inconsiderate to block people, so don't be surprised if they are rude and inconsiderate passing you.

Not only that, but occasionally it does happen that people have real emergencies. I'm pretty sure if your wife has just been in a car accident your not going to be that concerened with making sure your going the speed limit. The last thing you need is some zealot blocking you.

Germans in general fucking suck on highways. They will pull out in front of you while you're doing 200+ kph and they're doing 100 kph.

They don't pay attention to what's beside them. God knows how many times I've almost been side swiped.

They don't know "left lane is for fucking passing, not sitting in it for the hell of it."

After living in Germany for the past 2 years, I must say that Germans are the 2nd worst drivers I have seen. Regardless of what speed they are doing. Koreans still take 1st.

I pray to God for forgiveness everytime my sin needle passes that holy speed limit number because I put the entire earth and especially all first born children and insurmountable risk everytime I do that durty deed.

How can you drive safely if you are breaking the posted speed limit? Speeding increases the chance of an accident and increase the severity of an accident.

Just cause it costs more, doesn't mean it's better. If you go through a US driver's ed course, you end up having more lessons and more driving time than a German driver's ed.

Driver's ed is mandatory in Germany, since you are required a specific amount of theories and a specific amount of driving time.

The driver's ed course I went through in the states had me doing double the amount of time for theories lessons and driving lessons than a German driver's ed. It also only cost me $50 bucks instead of the 200 Euro that Germans charge, that included the cost for testing. While Germans will charge like another 200 Euro just to test.

Higher price doesn't mean better. Much like anything else in the world you'd pay for. Like man made diamonds. Cheaper and less flaws than a natural diamond.

So you are saying that you have the right to stay on the fast lane and others should not overtake you since you are already driving at the speed limit?

If there are no laws against it, then he has every right to chill in that lane. Sure, it'd be quite inconsiderate, but he'd still be allowed.

But with his example, it's sounding like there was one lane for oncoming traffic and the one lane he was in. Not two lanes for each direction.

You sound like someone who will accelerate to pass someone on the Autobahn when you already saw the other car from a distance turns on his blinker to change the lane to pass another slower car.

Germans use blinkers to signal intent? I usually always see them change lanes without ever using them or they start changing lanes, then they use their signal.

Merging vehicles are required to yield to cars with the right-of-way. The vast majority of people seem to be ignorant to this however.

Just to make sure that you really know about driving in Germany, please tell me what is the basic rule they use when driving around residential area other than the speed limit.

I agree but if you drive in Germany, you will notice that most people won't accelerate their way through to pass another car especially when they see the car on the slower lane is approaching another car. For them the fast lane is for overtaking, they don't really stay there when the slower lane is empty.

There are some ignorant people everywhere in this world but here in Germany, generally they drive in that way so I'm not suprised when krotch say he almost been side swiped especially if he accelerate his way through to pass like that. Generally the people here won't mind slowing down a bit to let another car to pass a slower car since they know that the other car would go back into the slower lane after there is a space for the car.

It's called reckless driving, and people have been fined for it before, so he does not have the right to chill in that lane.

He said he was in the left lane, there has to be two lanes for that to occure.
