Got extra GPU power?

So, im new to this. I think i setup my desktop's 8800gts 512 to do this but im not sure.

I installed it input the username and team number but not the passkey and pressed ok. The window disapears and if I try and open up Folding@home again via starrt->Programs it gives me an error message along the lines check to make sure a client isn't running.

How can I be sure it's running?

What happens if my desktop goes idle?

Hey, i installed the gpu2 client and followed the instructions about duplicating and make a gpu and gpu2 folder, and making the shortcuts for -gpu 0 and -gpu 1, but whenever i try to start the -gpu 1 i get an error saying:

jl2tev.jpg

And FahMon doesnt seem to work/update while F@H is running.

Any help would be appreciated as i could leave F@H running on my comp all day if i could just get it to work correctly with the 4870 x2.

Thanx in Advance! :D

I thought it was team 33?

It is team 33, make sure you change that!

Also, you need to extend your desktop to the other monitors..... Your running vista so you need a monitor plugged into the second card, KVM, or dummy plug.

Indeed - Team 33 it is. :)

Actually since you are running a 4870X2 i dont think that you will have to extend the desktop would you? Since its technically only one card? I guess Ive never setup and X2 before. Someone earlier today had a X2 - let me see what the issue was with his.

Take a look at post #19 and #22 in this thread. Sounds like it might be the same issue. :)

3GHz Q6600 (notfred) and a 8800GT w/ the shaders @ 1700 is netting a total of 8500ppd. Folding is fun!

whoa my mistake, all that folding for the wrong team :(

Anyways for the 4870 x2, i've been reading around and before all you had to do was "force component video detection" without even connecting a second monitor, but now people are running it without even enabling that. All they are doing is what i am trying to do, just successfully :(

If anyone else here has a working 4870 x2, plz chime in :)

Ah yes. I have been in that situation with XFX as well. I wish they would cross-ship RMA'ed cards. I have found them to be a reputable company and have always treated me well but the RMA process does seem to take a little while.

I hope you get your card back soon.

Just in from them

Estimated delivery May 12, 2009; I sent the card in on April 25th.

I will try to get my Q9550 on it

EDIT: Q9550 going :D

Great! Did you use the SMP client? Thats probably the one that will net you the most bang for your buck.

Bummer about your GPU. Hopefully you get a working card back at least. My RMA'd cards from XFX all seemed to work perfectly when I got them back at least. :)

What you need to do is check the "force tv detect" in CCC. This will make Vista think you are running dual displays. You will then be able to utilize both gpu's. Good luck.

Say what?

A guy called notfred has created a number of diskless Folding applications.

http://reilly.homeip.net/folding/

All you need is a USB stick or a CD to run it. With those, though, you won't be able to use the computer for anything else. Another option he's created is a Folding Virtual Appliance that you can run through VMWare as a virtual machine. They work pretty slick. I've got the diskless application running on my laptop right now.

Those running the notfred VM appliance on their main machine, how do you go about pausing it? I want to play some flash video but its choppy while folding.

I am going to start folding tonight guys so anything I need to know for my quad core phenom 720 and my gtx280 and 8800gt to work all at once?
Heck, even my wife can fold with her e2160 and 8600gt. :)
Thanks

Or better yet, can you set priority's somehow?

As far as I know, it's not possible to get the GTX 280 and 8800GT Folding together in the same box. Best bet would be to go with the GPU client using the GTX 280 and the SMP client on your 720.

Or better yet, can you set priority's somehow?

You can go into Task Manager and change the priority of the VM to Low. That's only a temporary fix, though.

Another option would be to run a program like Bill2's Process Manager. It lets you set rules for priority and affinity and stuff like that.

Just tried that, but im still getting this:

Also, how would i go about check my personal ppd and stuff like that, since i cant seem to get FahMon to work :(

What isn't working about fahmon? I just started folding yesterday and I have fahmon up and running monitoring multiple PC's. Pretty simple.

well i added my gpu clients, but the stats dont seem to update, and when i do i manual reload client all it does is update the the %, not the current credit or anything else. it also doesnt seem to be updating my team to 33 even though F@H is showing thats the team im folding for.

I think you just have to be patient. I have a Core Duo iMac folding and its gonna take a whole day to finish one WU. ;)

ah well i already went through a 1000/1000 today and am on 5100/10000 right now, but im not exactly sure how that translates into WUs :p

And damn, the 4870 x2 gets hot even with one core under load, core 1 temp is around 87-88 C and core two is around 50-51 C, there burning up my room, but i guess its for a good cause :)

Wow. My cpu & gpu cores stay in the low 60's. And yes, it is for a good cause.

ah i see you also have a dual gpu card, besides the force tv detect in ccc, what else did u do to get both gpus to fold? i can still only get the 1st one, while the 2nd still says gpu is not supported or that i need a current driver.

I only checked the box and then made sure CCC was seeing 2 displays. The F@H client saw the 2nd core immediately. It did take some fiddling.

ah ok, i did that, and this time the gpu2 shortcut did start, but first gave me a message saying client 6***(dont remember) is already in use, and that the message wont be shown and restart. so i hit ok and re clicked the shortcut and the client started, but the gpu usuage for the 2nd core still doesnt go above 0%.

For the shortcuts, they're both pointing to the same target folder and exe, except one has -gpu 0 and the other is -gpu 1. And for the start in, gpu 0 is in ...\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu\ and gpu 1 is in ....\AppData\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu2\, which accordign to the set up guides is correct, but its still not working :(

Hey guys I just started folding for the [H]ard team :) right now I'm only running my 3400+ AM2 sempron that's oc'd to 2.25ghz but here in about a month I'll be building a new rig consisting of an E5200 and a 9600gt which will both be folding full time.

Great! Thanks for the help! We can always use more processing power. :)

Are you running the standard CPU client or the SMP client? Any problems in setting it up?

Currently I'm using the standard CPU client because my processor isn't dual core. It was very fast and easy to set up. When I build the new rig I'll run the SMP client to fold on both cores. The E5200 will also be overclocked. Want to get as many points as I can for you guys.

Heres a screenshot showing that the gpu 1 client did start, it just isnt actually doing anything

speedy - Sorry man I wish I could help you out more here. I have never setup a dual GPU card before so I'm not sure of the procedure. I bet if you ask down in the DC sub forum though someone might be able to help out. There is a fairly long CC thread going on down there. Thanks again for helping man.

Anyone else want to throw some spare cycles in for the Horde? Another 20 GPUs would really come in handy. :D

Speedy.... you running a X2 card right...?

Just like we have problems with NV cards on NV mobos (gtx 260 and above) we have had issues getting both cores going on X2, there are ways... but are not easy and I'm not well versed.

Anyone know if a GPU Linux client is ever going to come out? I have a research box that doesnt get a lot of use and would love to fold in its spare time :).

speedy, you might want to try using the regular tray clients instead of the one with the NVIDIA graphical stuff. I know that graphical stuff caused a ton of problems early on. Not sure if it still does, but it certainly doesn't help you any, so definitely worth a try.

You can load wine on the linux box and fold inside it. From what I understand you get amost the same ppd.

Hey Speedy,

Pardon my ignorance if you've tried this, but have you tried out the console/service client instead of the Systray one? I vaguely remember being able to get two 4870s or 4850s folding with that on Vista x64 wihout issue in the past. I haven't had nearly as good luck with the system tray client/graphical viewer.

As long as the machine ID and -gpu x flag are there, the console/text/service client works better for me.

On rare occasion I get the "conflict message" where GPU0 or GPU1 client says it has already started under another PID (process ID) in Windoze.

I've also stopped folding with two cores/cards in my office as well due to heat. 4850s and other mid-range cards are better in regards to heat output and power usage.
