4850X2

WOW looking at the results of this card it rapes gtx280 which i was going to buy (thinking to buy).

Its far less expenssive than 4870x2 and performs close to it, what more could you ask for :)

My main concern are the drivers, have they been polished and has ATI released drivers that work 100% with this card?

Also i believe it should fit into my antec p180, any thoughts on that?

Damm van that pic makes the card look like its about to fall out of the socket

Is it that heavy?

no, not really, but its so long and its only supported by the slot. i think the reason that its so long is it has added power reg circuitry at the very end, with a heat sink on it. and the power cables are pulling it down. after i screwed it in, it was straighter, but still sags a little at the end. i moved it to the middle slot, and moved the hd's up to make the cables a tiny bit neater. i will post some shots in a couple hours.
to above guy. ati/amd has not released any drivers (exceot win7 which are based on earlier drivers) since a couple weeks before the card was released. will be supported in next release (9.1), according to sapphire tech support. and it will prob fit in your case, as long as no drives are mounted directly behind it. might fit even then, but it will be a tight squeeze.

look at it in relationship to the xfi platty below it.

hi i have 4850X2 i have been haveing assues all ok play playing games like left 4 dead .with the card you get 3dmark vantage i run it. the 1st seen the water i get tidelwaves all over the screen i have to quit

Hes saying hes getting tidal wave artifacts while running vantage, but its fine while playing games like left 4 dead.

The corruption in Vantage is caused by not rebooting after enabling crossfire. Reboot the machine and then run Vantage and it should be ok after that.

Who's running 4 monitors off one of these? Im considering getting one to replace my 4870 since I want to drive 2 30's and 2 20" LCD's.

It's not like Sapphire's drivers are wildly different from the official Catalysts. They've just been tinkered with to support the 4850 X2.

And the Catalyst 9.1s will officially support the 4850 X2, so by the time you buy the card and receive it the 9.1s should be available.

I'd like to see how this card compares to the GTX 285, I'm assuming that would be a close battle. I like the performance of this card, but I just set up my 280!

Close battle is not enough considering the HD 4850 X2 is $100 cheaper.

It's okay fanboy I'm not attacking ATi let's just calm down... Breath... In with the good... Out with bad!

There's some decent prices in the [h]ot deal's section where you can get them around 314 dollars. I wouldn't say it's quite 100 dollars... I'd personally prefer not to deal with Crossfire cards or SLI cards. I'm also kind of wondering if I would get similar performance numbers to you guys if I stepped up to a GTX 285, because it's my only reasonable option! So that was the reason for asking... not starting a battle. This is a very nice card at a great price, so kudos to everyone enjoying it!
I like ATi... it's okay I'm not attacking it... just thought i'd throw that out there again. I was an owner of an x1800xt.

$314 vs $259, still a big price difference for close battle.

Relax, I'm not attacking you for paying more to get a similiar performance. Afterall I'm just a fanboy of price/performance. As long as the price/performance is better, it doesn't matter if it is a dual, triple or quadruple GPU card. I won't pay more just because I prefer a brand.

I would assume the 4850X2s would end up outperforming the 295 by a significant margin.

Very likely, especially given how one 4850 X2 by itself is at least on par with a 295--and this is with early driver benchmarks.

i am thinking about adding another 4850x2. i am trying to find some definite answers on how quad crossfirex is working, tho.

I'm trying to decide between a GTX 295 and dual 4850X2s. The pricing is pretty similar, so I'm curious. I would assume the 4850X2s would end up outperforming the 295 by a significant margin.

Don't forget if you go with Dual 4850x2's you are going to need a major PSU and you are going to raise the heat in our case since they exhaust into your case.

Not hating on the 4850x2 just something to think about.

It's often repeated on forums that some video card's stock HSF's "exhaust hot air into the case". It's overblown, as per usual with geeks. Even the most coveted after-market air coolers blow the same exhaust back into the case. As long as you have good air-flow to begin with, it's a non-issue.

As far as a power supply is concerned, I don't think anyone who can afford to Quad-fire 4850 X2's or 4870 X2's is worried over a few extra dollars for a better one...

Nice work! Let's us know what you think vs HD 4850 Crossfire... I'd be interested. :) How's that 940, also?

nice psu. i was thinking of getting that one before i got the zalman. is that the one with the windows monitoring? and if the x2 can fit in an a05, it can fit in anything. i have one and it is tiny. and my x2 out performs my 4870 crossfire, so it will run circles around 4850 crossfire.

Yah, it was $259 AR at amazon about a week ago...and now it's back up to $319 AR at
amazon...lmao. I got mine for $259 though...hope it fits in my case.

it will be back on sale. i got it for $289 on 12/15 which i believe was close to release day.

btw the linux cat 9.1 beta that were released (leaked?) a week or 2 ago includes the 4850x2 in the inf file. so presumably it will be there in the windows versions.
i am hoping that everyone i recommended the card to is getting good results. we should really have a thread like this for all new and/or significant hardware releases, so the early adopters can pass on tips, results in particular games, comparos outside of the professional reveiwers articles, because we can go a little deeper, and play the games much longer. and how its going to work with and/or fit in different hardware configs.

looks boss. pick up many centigrades? that silver heat sink on the crossfire chip was already there under the shroud, was it not? and isnt that an x-fi platty?

Now that looks amazing.
Would those things fit on a 4870X2 as well?

Yep.

Vanilla, something is terribly wrong with this review in regards to cod5 at least. Going to
have to go over what specs they were using again....Just got my card in today...and my results are totally different
in COD5 at 1920x1200 4xaa/16xaf max settings. I am using the downloadable sapphire
8.12 drivers:

x2drivershot.jpg

and my fps 95% of the time or so is staying at a constant 60fps with very rare
minimum fps of 48 or so. That is of course on stock clocks only as well. But I must say cod5 is incredibly smooth...and I am actually
amazed at the performance of this card. I use to have a 4870x2 and I am finding this
card to be right on par with that card. Not sure of the specs on that system bitech
was using...or if they enabled triple buffering...but my specs are:

Coolmax 950 watt PSU
4850x2 2GB
4GB DDR3 OCZ fatal1ty ram - 8-9-9-20 @ 1343mhz
Asus Rampage Extreme X48
Q6600 3.2ghz OC

Honestly I am quite surprised that this card performs that well. I can definitely see why
this card is limited in production, as it pretty much makes the 4870x2 and gtx295
pointless. But wow, great card.

Otherwise some cons: the 4850x2 is a bit loud at idle...that matters not to me as the gfx2 block
on my 4850 along with an additional gfx2 waterblock will replace that air cooler any way.
Also the new drivers from sapphire were a bit quirky to get installed on vista 64. I had to try installing
it a few times to get it to work...for some reason manually pointing windows to the inf file seemed to help...lol. Any how, 4850x2 is quite the beast! Also can anyone else here
with a 4850x2 verify the performance I'm talking about in cod5 with the downloadable
sapphire 8.12 drivers? Note that I just downloaded and installed those drivers today.

I agree, Bit-Tech's CoD numbers are very off. I get solid, consistent performance in that game. I also disagree with their recommendation of avoiding the card. They should have held out for the Catalyst 9.1 drivers--actually, being a review site, shouldn't they have access to the Cat 9.1s in the first place? And their complaint about lack of official driver support is equally pointless, as the 9.1s have 4850 X2 support built in.

IMO, they miss the greater point that the 4850 X2 is almost on par with the 4870 X2 at a much cheaper price.

eggrock, how are those Zalman HSFs working out? Are they quieter than the stock cooling sleeve?

The silver heatsink was there, that's the bridge for the two GPUs. And yep, it's a refurbed platinum.

How's are the temps. now? Looks great man - were they a pain to install? (Removing the stock HS)

Temps are 31-33 idle and mid-50s under the load I put on it (10-15 minutes of Crysis.) Good enough for me. The noise reduction is tremendous.

Installation was very easy--this is the first time I've changed a HSF on a VGA card. No worries other than not slipping with the pliers when removing the pushpins.

Now that looks amazing.

I read that the 4870x2 has a different layout so I'd ask around/google if you're planning on trying it. IIRC the 4870x2 has 3 fans and has much quieter stock cooling.

[edit] BTW, the Overclock3D review has good pics of a naked 4850x2. See page 3.
