4850X2

First run...stock clocks on the 4850x2 and 3.2ghz OC on the cpu. The gpu score is putting up numbers
close to the gtx280 / 4870x2. I could OC my quad to 3.8 and my gpu to probably around 700/2000 pretty easily...I'm guessing though it would only hit about 14k to 15k though. I'll wait to oc thing thing when I get my water blocks.

Is the 4850x2 really as powerful as 4870x2? Those are results from 4870x2 e8400@ 3,8 some OC DDR2 X48DS4:

Should I sell my gtx260 and go for the 4850x2, or spend some more for the 4870x2. Post some FRAPS results from real games.

4850x2 is a bang for buck card that beats anything in its price range and a little above. it also can play anything high quality at 19x12. if you can afford the 4870x2 and either have a higher res monitor or just want the best, go for it. i am leaving the gtx295 out of the equation because i know jack shit about it.

The GTX 295 should always be left out of the equation.
We're in the ATI section, I'm allowed to be a fanboy here.

Well if a member here got 12k with a 4870 512mb card...Vantage to me makes absolutely no sense as the 4850x2 performs better than 4870 512mb crossfire in games, lol. I go through cards fast as well, but considering what I payed for this card, and the performance I'm seeing...this is probably the first card I'm going to keep for at least a year.

But hell, I'll probably change my tune once the 5800 series come out. As for PhysX...all the games I play don't seem to use physx..and I have pretty much all the hot titles out, like fallout 3, cod5, crysis warhead, etc.

The guy who says he got 12,000 with a single HD 4780 512 MB...it's unlikely to say the least under normal conditions. With copper blocks and liquid nitrogen...anything is possible I guess. It's hard to make a purchasing decision sometimes when some people are shall we say...less than truthful?

vanilla_guerilla, Ogilvy and everybody who has 4850x2 please send some game benchmarks ore results. Please!

No, the 4850x2 is not as powerful as the 4870x2.

I'd stick with the gtx260 unless you game on a 24" monitor and up.

I'll post some frap results soon.

just bought a 4850x2.... i hope it works as good as the reviews say..... found a guy on ebay selling a couple for 280 bux free shipping... theres 2 left right now. the seller is 'sostrooper'

Congrats man! I'm still running through some tests. My benchmarks are pretty useless to you guys at 2560x1600

man i dont think theres many at that res. i would guess most of us at 16x10 (cheap 22" monitors the last year and a half) or less, with 19x12 starting to pick up (cheap 24" monitors the last few months)

I just upgraded to a 24" Acer ..very nice for $250 I think. So far, i've been able to run all my games quite comfortably with the 4850 X2 @ 1920 x 1200.

Sounds good. With the hotfix and 9.1 drivers increasing performance with quad processors...you guys should start thinking about pawning those dual cores for some quads.

The hotfix increases performance with "multi-core" processors. Dual core processors count as multi, since multi means "more than one."

Has anyone tried GTA4 yet? I'm wondering if this game doesn't have a Crossfire profile, as it lists only 1GB of video memory in the graphics menu.

Exactly my point, and a quad has twice the cores as a dual core, hence....a bigger performance increase obviously. And to be more specific:

"According to this news, the version 9.1 (internal version: 8.561.3) of the
Catalyst graphics drivers should be multithreaded or bring multithreaded support to some applications. In some Direct3D 10 games like Crysis, this will bring up to 9% (on a dual core CPU) or 22% (on a quad core CPU)."

I will try and post some benchmarks tonight or tomorrow... I am running XP due to lack of funding for Vista64 :(

What do you guy want me to run ? 3dMark, Farcry2 ?

I may try to OC a bit so I will post stock and OC scores.

I really need some input on what benchmarks to run, the only expertise I have is running Quake3 benchies on a Geforce3 AGP :D

EDIT: Man, i really need to update my sig.... that was 3 systems ago

Not necessarily. Would be nice if that were the case, though. I'd really like to justify my Core 2 Quad on grounds of enhanced performance, not on grounds of "the extra cores help make up for sloppy coding," ala GTA4.

i keep mine on the floor now with all case fans on hi. while i dont use delta 120x38 or 120x76 fans anymore noise level has never been a primary concern with me.

Okey dokey, that's why you don't notice the whine the 4850x2 emits that most others notice.

I run it in an Antec P180 case with the exhaust fans on low and definitely can notice the sound of the Sapphire 4850x2 fans at even 20%. At 25% it gets annoyingly noticeable because of its high pitch.

But it is easily masked by turning up the volume a bit... but considering my dual 3870's were much quieter, the Sapphire 4850 x2 was a disappointment. (Probably made worse because the fan profile that Sapphire has chosen for the 4850 x2 is much more agressive than the one for the 3870 and from what I can gather from reviews, and the 4870x2's as well.)

I agree the stock cooling is noisy at load, but it's not that bad at idle on auto mode. For some reason my 4850x2 is quieter at idle on auto mode than when setting it to 20% fan speed on the cc panel. The only time you are stressing this card out is when playing games any way, so it's not going to be that bad once your gaming and you got the volume going. If you think it's noisy just slap a couple of those zalman fans that some members have done here. I'm still waiting for my other gfx2 waterblock to come in, so the noise will be gone soon.

Looks like the 9.1s are almost out. ATi's updating their site with references to them. Hopefully we get them tonight, rather than tomorrow or later.

Here are some pics of my 4850x2 watercooled. The blocks didn't quite fit with the crossfire chip heatsink so I had to remove one fin from each side as seen in the first picture. The card is now silent and loads at about 40 degrees.

Having this same issue. The installer reports that it's finished before it installs the drivers or the Control Center.

Good news is that Sapphire has the 9.1s up on their site, so we can use those in the interim.

Those links contain the 8.12 drivers. The only place on Sapphire's site you can find the real 9.1 drivers at the moment is on their front page.

Actually, it appears the 4850 X2 links contain the 8.12 hotfix drivers. Good compromise, I suppose.

Bump. Grabbed the 9.1s off ATi's site. The drivers will not install, nor do the release notes mention 4850 X2 support.

We're stuck waiting for Sapphire. Again.

So the ones listed on the Sapphire site aren't really the 9.1's? I'm confused on what the hell is going on here.

Sapphire has two versions listed. One is on the front page of their site under the Popular Downloads heading, labeled 9.1. The second is on the 4850 X2 driver download page, which while labeled 9.1 on the page itself, the download contains a file labeled 8.12. This is possibly the 8.12 w/hotfix, but like the official 9.1s on ATi's site, this driver will not install.

I'm downloading the 9.1s from Sapphire's front page, however the download is EXTREMELY slow. I doubt this driver set will install, but there's always a chance.

For now, it seems the best us 4850 X2 owners can do is to use the Sapphire 8.12 drivers released on December 9. We don't even get the multi-core hotfix. :(

Okay, the 9.1 drivers on Sapphire's front page also don't work. I think it's the exact same package as the official download from ATi.

Filed a support ticket with Sapphire. Hopefully someone can get a handle on why drivers intended for the 4850 X2 won't actually install on the 4850 X2.

Theoretically the official ATI drivers will work for the 4850x2 in the future. Since Sapphire was first off the mark with a dual GPU card, well... Call us early adopters. ;)

The 8.12's work just fine for me. No huge rush to 9.1--but if multi-CPU performance increases are in the works they will be welcome.

You guys are really missing out on the extra performance of the 8.12hf drivers and crossfire support. These drivers are night and day better than their older drivers. 9.1 doesn't have multi-core support anyway for whatever reason so 8.12hf drivers are your only bet for this performance boost until they get around to adding official support to their whql drivers. I also was under the impression that official support of the 4850x2 in ati supplied drivers was supposed to start in 9.1. Doesn't look to me that a whole lot was done with 9.1, especially considering the extra 3 week dev time.

Where do we get the 8.12 Hotfix drivers for the 4850X2?

We can't.

Only ATi offers the 8.12 hotfix, which means it won't work on the 4850 X2, as the 8.12s don't support the card. Sapphire hasn't released a modded hotfix or an updated 8.12 with the hotfix rolled in, either.

you cant get them for that card. too bad too because youre missing out. 9.1 wont solve that issue for you either because it doesnt have any performance boosts in it. 8.12HF is the best driver out there by far in terms of stability and performance. Sorry that you cant run it with your card.

Alright, time to quit rubbing things in. :p

Back on the topic of the 9.1s, curiously, Sapphire has moved the 9.1 releases to the archive page, replacing them with German-language CCC-only releases. (What?) Hopefully someone will sort the driver situation out... or at the very least, release the 8.12 hotfix.

One last bump: ATi, in a bonehead move to end all bonehead moves, has released a separate 4850 X2 driver. So technically the Catalyst 9.1 DOES support the 4850 X2... separately. Facepalm goes here.

Installing this at the moment. I'll have 3dMark06 comparison scores within the hour.

Here we go. First, the requisite CCC screenshot. Note that even though the Catalyst version is listed as 8.12, the driver version is listed as 8.57, which means it's really the Catalyst 9.1. ATi was sloppy not only with the release of this driver, but with the version numbering.

Here's my 3dMark06 score using the Catalyst 9.1. I wanted to post a comparison between my 8.12 score and my 9.1 score, but for whatever reason my 8.12 score disappeared. Going off memory, I think my score improved by a couple of hundred points, nothing really major.

Lastly, here's my 3dMark Vantage score using the 9.1s.

I'm about to give GTA4 a go. My average FPS usually ranges around 35-50, so I'm hoping for a slight bump--bringing that 35 up to 40 would be pretty good for a driver release without the multi-core enhancements.

ok ok, guys here is how you do it. even tho ati has a separate driver up for the 4850x2, it doesnt work. oh, also, you can probbaly do this to any other driver, including the 8.12 hotfix. here is how to do it for vista64. for other os's, the method is the same, just file names may be slightly different.

go to

C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-1_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_74234\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\CH_74234.inf (after you have unpacked the drivers, of course)

open the file with notepad. go to the end of the long list of ati cards and add this line

"ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9443

(with the quotes)

save. re-install drivers. enjoy the new desktop/hydra bullshit, but mostly the new drivers. btw, ati says "we will definitely support this card in 9.2." bullshit.

you guys who were early adopters of g92 last year should remember doing the same thing. i know that i do. remember, that is.

edit - possibility that this modification was added to the "4850x2 9.1" up on the ati site only. so try the regular install first.
