I'm done. The 4850 looks amazing for the price. I'll be getting a pair of them for CF, maybe a third one in a few weeks.

Who else has already decided on their card(s)?

I'm hardly sold because I haven't seen anything concrete yet. I'll be waiting for the [H] review.

Maybe it would be wise to wait for some official reviews to show up before making a decision.

My single 8800GTX that I bought November of 06 is still working beautifully for all the games I play. I'm able to run Age of Conan with maxxed out eye candy at 1920 X 1200 with no problems. I do see low framerates from time to time, but it's not frequent enough to bother me. The new cards do sound tempting, but I'll wait til my current card can't handle the games I throw at it.

I have pretty much decided on the 4850, unless the 4870 is significantly faster (leaked specs seem to indicate only a higher clockspeed). I don't really need anything faster, it's mostly to get rid of the Gigabyte 8800GT's silly Zalman cooler that forces me to choose between a noisy PC or constant fiddling with the fanmate...and to get back to one monthly driver instead of one every six months at best.

I was hoping that actual reviews would make upgrading to a GTX 280 a no-brainer. They didn't. That said, I went for one nonetheless. Among the thoughts behind this decision were:

(a) there are significant problems currently with SLI and Crossfire, especially microstuttering;
(b) one 8800GT wasn't cutting it (hence why I tried 8800GT SLI in the first place);
(c) the GTX 280 is the fastest single GPU currently available (remember that (a) removes SLI/CF, including GX2/x2 cards, from my consideration currently);
(d) While I think that the 4870x2 could beat the GTX 280, it's not due out for some more time, and (a) still makes me highly skeptical of any dual architecture, even if the 4870x2's approach is fundamentally different (and I really don't want to deal with SLi in its current state much longer, hence why I'm not waiting);
(e) if, by some minor miracle, Nvidia manages to fix SLI drivers to avoid microstuttering (not that I'm holding my breath), I have the option to upgrade my PSU and get a second GTX 280.

the only logical choice at this point is to wait for more benchmarks or not upgrade.

if you wanna throw money away on 2gtx280s im not gonna stop you but i am going to laugh at you.

Not upgrading cuz my single 8800GTS G92 is rocking everything I play. And when it stops doing that, I'll buy another one used for like $100 later this year or next and have SLI GTS's that will last a little while longer even yet.

I'm almost certain I'm going with ATI, but whether it's to be the 4870x2, or 1x 4870 1gb, or 2x 4870s in xfire, or even 4850s really comes down to pricing, release dates, and performance.

These were supposed to be out in May. Then they pushed it to wait for more DDR5, and to sync up with NVs release. Now they're running even later. I wish they'd get on it already!

i;m also certain to go for 4870x2 if i have the patience , otherwise a 4850 and another one later .

Gonna wait for the 48** reviews but as it looks now I'm getting a 4870, possibly two for crossfire.

I'd prefer one card because, if nothing else, I'd rather not pay the extra cash for a second waterblock if I don't need it.

How am I supposed to decide when half the cards on there don't have real reviews?

I'm waiting on the Ati benches and to see how drivers and pricing shakes out over the next month or so.

The only thing I've decided is that I won't be dropping mad $$$ on my next card. The last "expensive" card I bought was my X800XL, which promptly was reduced from a $350 video card to a $230 and then $175 video card when the X850s and then X1800s were released all within a few months of my purchase. Technology moves too quickly for me to justify spending over $400 on a new GPU, since their max useful life is much shorter than consoles and they depreciate much more quickly (3 years with a max salvage sale of $50 for my X800XL and 5 years with a resale of $120 for my PS2).

Something of the 4xxx variety. Doesn't really matter what as long as it's powerful and affordable, so on and so on.

I will likely be getting one or more 4850s, but it would be kind of silly not to wait at least until the NDA on the 4850/4870 is up, if not for the NDA on the upcoming dual 4870 card (4890? 4870x2?)

I've always been wary of multi-GPU solutions in the past, but dual 4850s has a strong price advantage, while the dual GPU card will likely rock because they're not using Crossfire to connect the two chips. The new architecture is supposedly designed to be extremely scalable as you add chips, like Penryn quads that are actually two dual-core dies.

my upgrade path will be the fastest card that can drive my soon to be acquired G2400W 24' @ 1920 x 1200 for ~$250

ill put my 9600gt in my other rig and try and sell my 7900GS to someone for as much as i can get.

+1 for the 4870. But I will definitely wait until the fall to get one when the drivers get more mature.

Snagged a GTX280 for $480ish earlier, somehow doubt a 512MB HD4850 in crossfire will beat it out at high AA (8x CSAA or higher)/AF (16x High Quality) levels 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 in games.

Beat it outright? Probably not.

Trade blows? Come close for a lot less money? We can hope.

If I may ask, sir, where did you find it for that kind of money?

Doubt it will trade blows on the settings I stated since it won't have enough memory bandwidth :). Without AA/AF sure, but blurry textures + huge screendoor + jagged edges = not good... I never play without high levels of both. Seeing as how an 8800GTX chokes on those compared to a 280GTX (http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/geforce_gtx_280/page_6.shtml ) I can't picture cards with lower memory bandwidth (the limiting factor) will succeed any more.

I got it through the 35% off Microsoft Live Search promotion that was going on last night and today... 200+ page thread on slickdeals and a few pages in the hot deals here :). $480 isn't a huge amount more than $420ish for a pair of 4850s on that size a purchase for the gains.

My laptops Radeon Express 200M does good enough for me especially at 350Mhz (Stock is 300Mhz) with 128MB shared Ram. My sweet 7 FPS in Crysis on the lowest settings at 800x600. I voted to not Upgrade.

I went with the GTX 280. I didn't want to deal with the multi-GPU related issues. And I've had my 8800GTX for over a year and am tired of waiting.

And my e-peen just grew 4 more inches!

I will either get a GTX 280 or an HD 4870x2, therefore I am waiting for the HD 4870x2 to be released and reviewed.

maybe not the bandwidth on the memory but the 4800's have twice... almost triple the Stream Processors and over 1 Teraflop of processing power (so they say), we will just have to see , I'm hoping for some competition , and I believe this time that ATI has something.

I'm going with the budget e-peen option: GTX280 now. Ebay it in August. 4870x2 in September. GTX295 GX2 in 2009.

Ouch. ATI's got quite a good customer base of this poll translates into sales respectivly.

If the 4870x2 solidly beats the 280 and doesn't suffer from the traditional microstuttering of multiple GPUs (as is rumored), I might be compelled to do that. But I wasn't going to hold out until August to see whether ATI pulls it off, and in the meantime I'll enjoy my 280. :)

I will be looking at the best I can get around $300 so most likely 4870/50.
Also I'd prefer something thats not too loud ... I will not be able to live with the stock 260/280 noise level.

I'm getting a GTX 280. I've had this 8800GTX since 11|2006.

I am not bothering with multi-GPU, SLi or Crossfire for my main rig until someone creates a solution that always works. I've tried all three and have been most happy with a single strong GPU.

Same here:
MSI GTX 280 OC is sitting on my desk waiting to be installed (damn 177.35 donwloading so SLOW).

My trusty BFG 8800 GTX has been bought at the end of november 2006 and I have to say that it is one of the best and most reliable graphic card I ever used. But for me it was time for something faster. Since I don't want to bother with SLI/CF, I decided to got with the most powerfull single-chip solution.

My upgrade path is GTX 280 > 2*GTX 280 SLi > 3870 X2 [pending benchmarks] (especially if Nehalem doesn't support SLi!)
