Again, I want to welcome many of our members who are coming back to the DC area ...

It is because of you , [H] is the best team out there.

It does not matter how much you fold or with how many computers.

Whether you have a P4 1.8ghz or a farm of Q6600's .... each WU is important and I am grateful to have you on the team.

What is important, is that you are part of this team and helping with very important research.

It is because of this team effort, we are able to continue to be the top ranked team.

I think, as a team, we need to be more supportive of users who run just one client.

Every WU turned it helps, and those are the people who keep this team going.

For all the talk of points, and how to ring every last point out of our systems, what Evil said is true.

I like this team so much because the guy who fold on his 4 year old laptop and they guy who turned his closet into a boxen depository (props Sunin) all have the same place in the team.

I have never seen anyone say "Well you just have 20k points" or some other degrading line.

This is a team that constantly builds each other up (maybe some good ribbing in fun and good old competition) But we always are building.

Good people, good team, great cause !

I agree with these sentiments completely, and in only the last day on the [H]orde I have been able to see, first hand, how amazing of a team this is. I have been a reader of HardOCP and its forums for close to 7 years now, and a poster for only a couple, however I have never been greeted with such enthusiasm and kindness as when I turned over my PS3 to folding yesterday, and again my rig (in sig) today. It makes me not only want to contribute more to the [H] and keep the [H]orde on top of the standings, but more importantly donate as much processing power as I can until hopefully a major breakthrough is developed in the fight against these horrible diseases. Thank you all for your kindness and willingness to offer a helping hand, not only to me, but most importantly to all those people around the world who could possible be positively affected by our work.

Thanks

Well said.

Every single WU helps.

Sorry, I had to repeat that.

It doesn't matter if it's worth 1760 points or 15... it's still a WU that needs to be crunched... if the "smaller" units didn't matter, I can't imagine that Stanford would send them out. I have a number of older 2.8 cele's running the standard client and I get 15 pointers frequently.. and I'm fine with that because if the work was not important, and didn't need to be done, I wouldn't have got the unit in the first place..

The bottom line is this..... every single boxen makes a difference...they really do. The important thing making sure that you are making the most of what you have. Rather it be an overclocked quad with four gigs of memory and a kick ass water cooling setup or an old P4 3G Northwood underclocked so your video card can make the most out of the GPU client... let's just try and get as much work done with the hardware that we have.....

Dig?:)

I'm looking forward to hearing from some of those we haven't met yet, and if you all have any tips for us, please.... please jump in here and speak up!! We've got a lot to learn... at least I do...

EDIT... you ninja'd me there haithamt:)... Again, glad your here and welcome... We're truly glad to have you here with us, and the fun has just begun!!!

I agree with everything you wrote in your post but I have to ask, how can underclocking a processor help with the GPU client?

i would only have to suppose heat and power issues, or the gpu client has issues with OC'ed procs.. im not sure

Well, in my case, I had to reduce my P4's frequency about 100MHz. This nearly eliminated the EUE's I was getting with the GPU client. My video card wasn't highly OC, and I was wondering why my PPD seemed low for the card I have. When I decreased the CPU frequency I was able to OC the video card much higher without risking an EUE. The net effect was a more productive client in the order of ~50PPD. It might not seem like much but if you ever ran the GPU client you'll know how difficult it is to optimize it.

My cards are 256meg variants, I'm still averaging 660ppd on them but they aren't exactly all that efficient, so every little bit helps...
Then I'm still doing something wrong because I have a 512MB card and I average 630PPD...

Yes Aldamon showed me the light in this. I was thinking of downing my P4 w/1950 ATI and PS3 in lieu of a new Q6600, but because of his team fellowship he was patient and explained why those two low PPD producers were vital to the cause!

Thus they stay active. Do the most you can with what you have or can afford and join in on the fun!

Are you sure that was me? I'm pretty sure I was a jackass as usual.

:D

Well you were a bit /cough rough, but patient and made the point! :p

That's one of the things I love about this team. You don't have people with "attitudes" posting about "how wrong" you are or are unhelpful because "you're not contributing enough"

Everyone here encourages you and it makes you want to contribute more.

I have never seen anyone say "Well you just have 20k points" or some other degrading line.

Trust me, the likelihood you would ever hear something like that come from a member of this team is so low, it's not even worth trying to calculate. I guess you could try and calculate it if you're bored and you have lots of paper and pencils; no taking away from folding cycles for these calculations. :p

There are a couple of reasons you won't hear something like that. Already mentioned is that most of the people folding are doing it because they want a cure and every little bit helps. Even a machine barely turning in work units on time is welcome because it's part of the cure. Some people may be in this for the points and competition. I have no problem with this and their thought is going to be the more the merrier. The competition isn't just between individuals but also between the teams. That same person is going to want everything folding for this team anyone can get their hands on.

Another reason is that I will do my damnedest to hunt down any jackass that makes fun of anyone with low production or makes fun of someone who asks a question that seems elementary to those of us folding for a while. I won't say what I would do to the person who did something that stupid as I would prefer any happenings to be a mystery. I also have a few connections outside of my town so my reach is greater than it seems.

Truth be told, we are a group of people that came together for different reasons and became a great community and practically family. This community is what makes this a great place. Sure, we have some fights and disagreements but they seem to occur much less often that those I have with blood family.

And I got your back on this.... there has never been, nor will there ever be room for assholes who choose to "poke fun" or degrade other team members here.... That is only one of many, many facets that make this the best team in the world. We welcome everyone with open arms and do everything we can to help one another out... It is truly a wonderful thing, this [H]orde.... it is indeed:)

When I started here a few years ago... I felt plenty welcome. Lots of nice people populate the DC sub forums. There are even a few nice people in Gen May!

I've been trickling in a few WU's in every now and again. Mostly from my old PIII laptop and my work pc. Just recently got a hold of an old four socket Xeon server running CentOS. Doesn't have 64-bit support so I'm just running 4 clients in parallel. Wish they'd make a 32-bit Linux SMP client. Oh well, someone's gotta do those 15 pointers right? :)

They all add up the same.....I do a few of those myself. I actually have a fairly wide variety of boxens folding, cause the little WU's are just as important as the big ones when it comes to science.

And contrary to popular belief, FLECOM can't do all the single processor units himself :D
