3870x2's are here

Can't wait to see results. I want to replace my 8800 with either this or 3870 or maybe just 3850 crossfire to be weird.

Which 8800 do you have? 3870 isn't much faster than the old GTS, and it certainly isn't as fast as GTX or the GT.
 
I have the option to Crossfire both cards. Running a benchmark to see if its working.

Great if it works, but I thought the driver wasn't released for CF on the X2 cards yet?

Perhaps you can try a CF aware benchmark? Run it with and then without CF enabled to see if there's a difference. Just a suggestion.
 
I just went ahead and ordered it. Should be here tomorrow. :D Thought I'd take a chance and buy it. If everything goes well, I'll have it on my door tomorrow. Should keep me occupied at least until the G100 and R700 comes and then I'll see what to do.

I may have to try it again. I used the bridge from the 3870 and it didn't work when running both 3870x2. The second 3870x2 couldn't be seen by the OS. Once I used the bridge that came with the 3870x2. Windows saw it right away.

They both look identical, except for one small number. Weird.

One thing ive noticed about this compared to the 2900 is contrary to reviews the retail versions shroud has a slight gap at the end where it meets the back venting plate. 2900 its totally sealed off.

Very interesting. Love the shorter PCB. I wonder if/how the 8 pin vs 6 pin power affects overclocking or anything else. Also, not sure where all the extra heat is going to go. Hope the case has good ventilation I guess.

The old GTS. I just want the lower power consumption and the cooler temps. My computer is more of a HTPC so I want the hardware video decode.

If games start not to suck maybe I'll start playing more of them again.

But nice results its nice to see ATi being competitive again.

I pulled the 2nd card out and checked again for Crossfire.

Looks like I can turn on and off Crossfire within one card. I wasn't expecting that.

Going to reinstall the drivers again.
 
Can anyone confirm the Multi-Monitor + Crossfire support AMD/ATI was reporting late last year, with the 3870x2's? I'm sure this feature(restriction) was just driver level, but since I'm still on a BadAxe 1 board, I'm seriously considering ATI and crossfire--but not at the expense of 1 of my monitors.

More and more people have multiple monitors in their setups. If you visit the displays forum you will notice there are many who stand to benefit from a card with quad DVI. With four connectors you only need one card, thereby saving a slot for another device.

With version 8.1, I can run two monitors with (2) 3870's in crossfire.
And also with a single 3870x2.

So nice to play Supreme Commander with two monitors.
 
did you use the drivers off the cd or the whql drivers off the ati site? catalyst does not allow me to enable cf with the certified drivers.

Drivers off the CD. Didn't know they had drivers for the 3870x2 on their site.

Looks like I can only enable CF when both 3870's are installed.

And that only enables CF within each card.
 
the drivers i got of the site weren't specifically for the x2's. i thought they might cover the new cards under the 3870 family through the 8.1's.

I don't think they cover the X2's Did they see the cards?

I know the drivers on the CD say X2's and are version 8.4
 
saw each card individually bot not both at the same time. the cf pane wasn't available.

Indeed. Actually I prefer the Asus card with quad DVI. GeCube also has one available. The X2 variants are starting to look very good IMV. Can't wait for the GDDR4 versions.
 
the various card reviews mention some kind of last minute beta driver or hotfix for the x2's. ati needs to make these updates easier for us to obtain, because we're the ones dropping a grand on this kind of gear. i doub't the reviewers pay for the samples they test.
