A study shows that if you are an idiot, you likely don't know it, and never will unless you get smart all of a sudden! Thanks Scali2.

It seems that the reason for this phenomenon is obvious: The more incompetent someone is in a particular area, the less qualified that person is to assess anyone's skill in that space, including their own. When one fails to recognize that he or she has performed poorly, the individual is left assuming that they have performed well. As a result, the incompetent will tend to grossly overestimate their skills and abilities.

The article is over a year old, and the study a few years old, but it likely still holds its water.

sounds about right to me. I know a few people that have that exact issue, and I myself am one that probably underestimates my skills. On a scale of 1 - 10 i never rate myself much about 6 or 7 on any skills area as I know that there is a lot I don't know and probably a lot more people than me far more skilled than me.

No, that is just an old saying for a retard that is trying to speak without being told word for word what to say 24x7

This article is soo true, it's funny how people who pretend to know all this stuff about computers think they have 80gbs of RAM and that C+ is a drink (well it is but...).

Or when people think more GHz means their CPU is better.

That is one that I still can't get people to understand, even those that should. That speed no longer means jack shit. I dont care if you have a P4 3.0Ghz the new QX9650 is still faster even if they both are the same Ghz.

I consistently underestimate myself to the level of anxiety over my own ability.

Ironically I feel that everyone does better than me at everything until the results are actually shown.

"wait don't you add up Ghz in quad cores!? so total of 9.6ghz TOTAL PROCESSING POWA !!" (shh, sit down shut up kthxbai)

When asked, most individuals will describe themselves as better-than-average in areas such as leadership, social skills, written expression, or just about any flavor of savvy where the individual has an interest.

At least in my children's school, when asked, most parents seem to think Einstein was a retard compared to their kids. They all think their kids should be in the gifted program or some crap like that.

Really sad.

I am so Smart, I Am so Smart, S-M-R-T imean S-M-A-R-T

omg, can't believe it took this long for someone to post this.

The high school exit exams that they tried implementing about 4 years ago over here in California were kind of an idiot check... They should have stayed the course with those tests, but faced too much flack. Seriously, the essay question on this test that I took Sophomore year was, "What kind of pet would you have, and why?"

"'fore I couldnt spel souperviser, now I is one." :p

Good reading. I forwarded the title link off of the main page a couple of phsycologists I know. It will be interesting to hear their responses.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS !
I saw a newspaper clipping on this study back in about 2000, but lost track of the guy that had it, and even tried searching on the internets to find this very info again ! (yes, I admit that I failed but am still highly competent at interweb searching ! LOL)

This article was great, because the most arrogant people who are THE most convinced they are right, but in my reality at least ;) ..they are the dumbest people I've ever met. I don't think it is just the fact they're so self induldged as much as it is the fact they talk more than anyone, with a daring attitude to try and ward off anyone who would disagree with them. Whats more, is that most usually everyone in the room is also completely behind them. Once someone that actually understands something starts talking, then come the retarded ass analogies with "common folk" common ground. Its embarassing. Maybe its just because I live in Oklahoma :D :D

I heard a quote once, made by a loser, but hell.. its worth repeating, because it applies to more than just politics. "If you're explaining, you're losing." Its true, too.

I've always found the smartest and most capable people I know are the ones that are most aware of what they don't know and can't do well.

In fact, I tend to lean toward a switched causation version of what the article says. It's not that being stupid makes people unaware of their own stupidity; I think being unaware of your own value leads them to not improve, rendering them stupid.

- The only reason there are so many stupid people, is because it is illegal to kill them

- God must love stupid people, because he made so many of them!

There are a lot of profoundly stupid people out there. I'm not saying I'm a genius or anything, but wow. Some of the people you meet while trying to find worthwhile employees boggles the mind.

Unfortunately the stupid ones are having 5 kids by the time they're 25, and the smart ones are having one or two because they understand the costs and challenges associated. The idiots are massively out-breeding the intelligent.

I think they made a movie about that...Idiocracy

Great movie, i suggest it to anyone who wants to know what will happen in a couple hundred years if we dont eliminate all Ghettos and Trailer Parks!

Wow, just went and downl.... located a legitimate copy of the movie at 4:00am... and am starting to watch it. The opening scene is EXACTLY what I was thinking. LOL.

This story bothers me. And I wasn't going to reply, but I couldn't help myself.

My problem is that an element of this "study" seems strange to me. Namely that they would would evaluate people on the basis of humor. The problem is as follows: If the majority of people aren't very intelligent, and they are evaluating people based on the opinion of "popular" comedians, then aren't they "poisoning the well"? It's just that most comedians aren't that funny to me...

Or maybe I'm lacking the frame of reference to even know what funny "is supposed to be"!?! Mind you, I am aware of the fact that I was not properly socialized as a child. After all I grew up in the middle of nowhere! Yes, we had electricity, and running water, but we shared a party line with 4 other families and there was no TV. The end result is that I tend to be too blunt. And I tend to be impatient with those whom I perceive to be lazy in their thinking. This is especially true of those who have academic credentials and who don't think things through.

Maybe I just don't understand... That happens sometimes. (rant off...)
