As part of an effort to more strictly regulate YouTube, Google quietly announced that its cracking down on duplicate YouTube videos. Google says they've removed many channels from the Youtube Partner Program, and that creators have a 30 day window to reapply. Youtube isn't just targeting copyright issues, as they claim they're looking to remove spammy automated content and straight up reuploads that don't violate the law, but don't add any new content to the video.

It's important to note that "duplicative content" is not just about copyright. The spirit of this YPP policy is to make sure we"re only allowing channels into the program when the content adds value, and is original and relevant. If you upload content from multiple sources or repurpose existing content, you may still be eligible for YPP so long as you're contributing to the value of that content in some way. For example, if you add significant original commentary, educational value, narrative, or high quality editing, then your channel may be fine to monetize.

Yeah bashing youtube is popular but this is actually a good thing.

I hate those fake channels taking other people's content and re-uploading them under their own name.

Big Tech is doing a big purge! Not just YT. FB accounts with 100K+ and even 1M+ followers have been scrubbed clean! GONE! Twitter is no different. Neither is google. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is archive all of your social media accounts. And spread the word to the people that you know, and advise them of the same.
    Have a great day!
    And good luck!

In other news google reduces yet another way for people to make money off them while increasing ad revenue for themselves...

To be less flippant about it, I'd be a lot more forgiving of this kind of thing if their previous actions hadn't caused me to assume the worst for whatever they do now, merited or not. To be blunt: I don't trust them, and I wouldn't use YouTube if a viable alternative existed. Whatever their stated reason is for doing this, I can't help but look for ulterior, more nefarious reasons. It's too bad, but that's how it is for me.

Some of those channels are for archiving content. I know of a few instances where 10 different people archive content from one channel. And they don't monetize it. And the owner of the content is OK with that, since their channel could get locked out at any time. I do understand where you're coming from though.

Get on gab. Go to gab.com and start an account. You can also buy into it if you wish, and you will earn dividends.

I don't have a problem with this. When I am searching for a specific video I want the original creators page to come up, not some dude who re-uploaded it.

I agree in principle, as long as it's not abused - like DMCA and ad revenue related bs - then this can be a good thing. We'll see.

I must be missing something. I've always felt that the people who upload to Youtube will do it anyway, so why pay them, especially since almost all of the uploads are crap anyway. I think the stupidest thing Google/Youtube does is pay for stuff they can get for free. How about if they just stop the payments for six months. I'm willing to bet that the amount of crap uploaded remains the same!

The beautiful thing about youtube is the old content that you can find that no one else cares about.

If this vanishes I will be crushed.

I love the old commercials, the old music tv stuff, the old vinyl stuff that you can't find anywhere else.

Or talking heads on tv/online video/social media convincing America there are only two viewpoints.

...and the other one is the problem.

    It's so petty.

YouTube isn't stupid enough to delete those videos. Unless they are duplicated. They know that they are the go to for tutorials and don't want to lose that huge market. My dad doesn't even know what YouTube is but ends up there all the time for diy projects.

One problem I can for-see is the abuse of govt authorities (at least in the United States), using this as a means of suppressing video which shows their actions in an unfavorable light.

This is not hypothetical. This HAS happened in the 1st ammendment audit community, which seeks to show people that you have a right to film in many places and under circumstances which many people mistakenly assume you don't.. Many police organizations and members have filed complaints, and in some cases, have gotten LAWFUL content they disagree with, or shows them in a bad light, taken down. This is one reason you see so much content mirrored in that community.

The superstars that make money will leave and take their followers with them, even better yet one of their competitors will steal those stars and pay them. That would be a heck of an easy way for someone to create a competitor in a space where they basically have a monopoly.

Using YouTube to archive other YouTube content is like making a backup of all your data on the same physical drive. I know that people do this, but it's not a good system. YouTube is probably just sick of buying a million hard drives a week to keep up with all the crap on there.

I dont see how this could be used in that way at all unless you are implying that the Govt will upload a copy of the video?

When a video is unfairly taken down a common strategy is to have it re-uploaded on alternate channels as a form of protest or to inform viewers what caused the take-down. It's also a form of insurance if you have trolls that want to strike your videos. It shows the publics if the terms of service were actually violated or not.

This is basically to make false flagging your videos more effective. Malicious people manipulate the system and Youtube shrugs its shoulders and blames the algorithm. The anti-Far Left is adept at utilizing YouTube politically. The Far Left not so much. So if you sour the whole system for politics, you're helping the Far Left.

Big difference between people uploading cat videos and high quality content people get real money to produce and have millions of hits on a regular basis.

    Facepalm. It's a troll-killing measure.

How would you like creating content and then some shithead in China or Romania uses an automated script to steal your content and reupload it to leech views and subs?

I really recommend reading at least a few sentences before kneejerking.

I’ve seen too many channels disappear because of this. It’s also one of the reasons why a lot of creators left instagram, too many people stealing stuff then trying to sell shirts....
