YouTube’s CEO says that Google is very close to having a filtering service in place that would prevent copyrighted content from being uploaded to the site.

The filtering system was supposed to have launched last year at YouTube, which Google acquired for $1.6 billion in October 2006. Delays in rolling it out have angered movie and television executives. Executives at NBC and Viacom have accused Google of dragging its feet on preventing YouTube users from uploading clips from hit shows and movies.

If it's tag or description based, I can see people working around it already. For example:

"Gavid Dilmour of Plink Foyd playing Comfertebly Nuumb"

Try entering that into Google:

Did you mean: David Gilmour of Pink Floyd playing Comfortably Numb

Fuzzy search for the win.

I wonder what it will do to the number of users when that happens.

Seems like some users spend all their time copping up episodes of shows to post.

Does anyone actually like those video blogs?

The amount of interesting original user content on there is VERY low. Seems like its best feature is for hosting video to be linked on other sites.

The only time I ever use youtube is to try and find a clip of a funny show to show family members / co-workers that missed it, or wanted to review it.

If the TV stations themselves want to host their shows then I don't mind, but if they remove all the good stuff and things like daily show or robot chicken or other comedy stuff then fook em.

If the filtering gets too bad, people will go to other video sites that are smaller and free. If that happens, no big deal, google can afford it.
