Your suggestion for $100 headset, please.

After years of service my Plantronics Gamecom headset will have to be retired, I need suggestions for a headset + microphone that can be used with onboard audio. Preferably not wireless.

If you have both a headphone and microphone input with your computer here's an excellent combo for under $100.

JVC HARX900 ($56) + Zalman Zm-Mic1 ($11) = around $70 after tax shipped.

Just clip the Zalman microphone onto the headphone cable as close to the mouth as possible. Use the mini clips on the microphone cable to latch the microphone cable onto the headphone cable. Insert the microphone jack into the mic Input of the audio input device and you are good to go.
