I'm in need of 4 things:

1) The best 2.1 speaker system for less than $100. Thinking the logitech z-2300's. 60% Music, 40% Games.

2) The best *closed* headphones for less than $100. Kind of wanting sennheiser's for their aesthetics, and also have heard good things about their quality. Again, 60% Music, 40% Games.

3) The best sound card for less than $70 that will be good for 60% music, and 40% games. This will be running #1 and #2, so if you recommend a digital input 2.1 setup, please have spdif in the sound card :)

4) A headphone amp (though I'm pretty sure I'll be getting this from a member on the board... so no recommendations really needed.)

Any and ALL recommendations will make my day! Thanks! :)

Headphones for less than 100 then a amp at about $50-$70 or so.
I would invest more in the headphones and get the amp later. The Sennheiser HD280s would be the first that come to mind, second would be the Audio Technica ATH-A500s ($105 though) which you won't need an amp for, just don't look at the ATH-A900s ($200) it makes people with no money, like me, sad :) .

If you still want to stay within that budget the Sennheiser HD212 Pros can be had less than $50 and the HD280 Pros less than $85.

The 280s will probably sound just fine with a low end Cmoy.

I agree with newbify2. Just ploop the money you would on a headphone amp right on better headphones. (that's my opinion)

If you spend your money wisely, it will be well spent. For headphones less then 100$, the Sennheiser HD280 come to mind. They do "some" things good, and other things just horrible. Up this budget to say... 170$us ... and then I would listen to the Beyerdynamic DT770pro.

headphone amp = Burr-Brown OPA2134, pretty much a reference design from the spec sheet, often called CMOY but I hate that name because it's not innovative at all and thus IMO doesn't deserve a special name

can you please show me this "reference design" you are talking about?

FWIW you are correct about the amplifier portion of a CMoy being a reference design (straight out of the "art of electronics") but there is more to a completed amplifier then just the amplifier section. ;)
 
oh, my bad, I thought it did have it. But still, it's practically the most basic op amp circuit as far as amps are concerned :p

Actually, why doesn't it? The other op amps I deal with (LM3886, OPA549, etc) do...
 
So what do you want to call the CMoy?

The reference amp? :p

I can see it now....
OMG the CMoy is now known as the reference amp does that mean it's a reference class amplifier? :D
 
What if you change the chip?
The OPA2134 amplifier is now the OPA2604 amplifier? :p
You got to remember the audiophile naming convention applies here.... which means you got to keep it simple or they get confused. :D
