Will you be gaming? If so, on what size screen? Also, do you plan on OC'ing? If not, go AMD, lol. If so, spend the extra $65 for an E6420 and Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B (this will let you hit 3.2Ghz on near stock voltage).

I'd go for the Corsair 620W for $125AR from Zipzoomfly or buy.com instead of the enermax. But hey, the enermax isn't a bad choice, lol.

Drop the 64-bit edition and use the 32-bit edition of Vista instead.

You don't need the $40 Scythe Ninja Plus Rev B to hit 3.2Ghz on near stock voltages. I'm hitting 3.2Ghz with a $20 Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro on near stock voltages. HOWEVER, if you want lower temps, then definitely get the Scythe Ninja. It could be that summer in California is really hot but my CPU is idling around 48C right now.

Anyway, what's your budget?

There is no reason to go with the 64-bit version unless you have at least 4GB of ram. Right now it looks like your planning on "only" 2GB.

Sorry. Should have been more specific. I'm planning on 4GB (4x1GB DIMMs)

Yeah, I'll be gaming on two Samsung 20.5" widescreen LCDs. I also plan on overclocking. Why the 6420 instead of the 6320? And I like Enermax. They haven't let me down yet.

I'll be getting a heatsink from Coolerguys. My A64 currently has a Thermalright SI-120. I'll probably get an SI-128 for this setup. Maybe the Zalman 9700...

The E6420 appears to be the new 'sweetspot' dual core overclocking chip, now that the newer batch of E6600's is proving to be sort of lackluster in that department. Why not E6320? Higher potential overclock.

E6320: 7 * 266 = 1.8Ghz, 2 * 266 = DDR2-533 << stock
E6420: 8 * 266 = 2.1Ghz, 2 * 266 = DDR2-533 << stock

E6320 w/ DDR2-800: 7 * 400 = 2.8Ghz << OC
E6420 w/ DDR2-800: 8 * 400 = 3.2Ghz << OC

of course, you should be able to OC that ram... but just in case you have trouble, you'll at least reach 3.2Ghz with the E6420.

Okay, I've changed it around a bit. Scrounged up a little more budget.

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.3): $99.99
EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB: $379.99
mushkin 550150 ATX12V 750W Maximum Power; 650W Continuous Power Power Supply: $129.99
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420: $186.00
2x Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066: $329.98
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM: $199.99

Subtotal: $1325.94
Shipping: $15.72
Total: $1341.66

Plus, there's $180.00 worth of mail in rebates on that stuff. Just gotta get this cash in the bank before they run out of the RAM. :D

Yah, at 3.2Ghz, "my" E6400 is idling at 35°C in this summer heat, with the Ninja and 1.33125v (stock is 1.325v).

GL with those rebates. I think you'll need to use another household for the 2nd ram kit. FYI, no board can reach 533Mhz (maybe there is one now?) so you really don't need to bother with DDR2-1066. I'd forego the rebate and just get a decent DDR2-800 kit instead, but thats just me... I dont like rebates, lol.

yeah what enginurd said. unless you're planning to use a memory divider?

Dang. My 3.2Ghz E6400 idles @ 46°C in this summer heat with an AC7 Pro and 1.33125V. Gotta buy a new heatsink now.......

E6420 @ 3.2Ghz, 1.40 vcore BIOS, 1.35 via software, 28C idle according to CoreTemp. Are you going by the actual core temperature, or the "CPU" temperature? I go by core temperatures.

I'm going by what CoreTemp tells me. Ambient temperature is 22°C right about now. Also, you're using water cooling so your temps should be lower than mine.

My watercooling is something of a joke, though. People with Thermalright Ultra 120's and Tuniq Towers regularly get better temps than me.

Well since this thread's still alive....

Got the stuff delivered and put together. The next day the mushkin power supply went pop and let the magic smoke out. Figures... I've always sworn by Enermax power supplies and the first time in 8 years that I haven't bought one, poof! It's got some 650w Antec piece of garbage in it right now until the Enermax 720w Infiniti gets here from Newegg, then that thing goes back to CompUSA. Voltages are all over the place...

On a lighter note, even with the crap power supply, she does 3.4GHz on the stock voltage with the RAM at 1066MHz (5-5-5-15). Not very stable though. I'll mess with it more once it gets a good PSU in it.
