Here's a list of criteria:

Reasonably good resolution

LOW time from when you click to when it actually takes the picture (yeah i know how you are supposed to hold it down a little so the autofocus works faster, but a lot of people don't)

Reasonably fast multishot would be nice

shutter/aperture priority

hopefully something small enough to carry around easily

I've checked on DPreview and there is just a boatload of info there, lots of cameras that meet these, but i couldn't find much info on the time between click and shutter
 
budget is less than $400, preferably. I still need to get college loans for this next year, so money may be tight, but i've always wanted a digital camera, and photography might be a good hobby.

Ah, see i've bee using their comparison tool for the most part. It's just so hard to narrow it down to a few choices and then read reviews, which is my typical method for buying things.
