Which type of Yate Loon 120mm do I want from jab-tech? They have 1200/1620/2200RPM models and a fourth model that spins at 1350. Which one is the best choice, assuming one of the fans I buy will be attached to a Fan Mate 2? I need two for case intake/exhaust and possibly one more for video card placement.

I'd go for the 1620's if you're controlling them by a fan bus.

Might as well, so you can go high or low with ease.

Why wouldn't you buy the highest RPM versions, then? You can always slow them down, after all.

You have a good point. I guess I would say that if you are pretty sure you are going to turn them down and feel a med or med-high will almost but not quite be quiet enough you would only be turning down the med speed fan a little where you would have to turn the high speed fan down a lot. The fan mate is a resistive fan controller and it just dumps the extra voltage it steals from the fan so its a bit (not much) of waste of power. I think too that you would have a wider range of adjustment in the lower speed range, the high speed fan might need to be turned down pretty low and you might not have a lot of "play" between getting it as low as you like and it stalling out.

But again, you have a good point, if it was a killer machine, air cooled, and I was going for the highest possible OC and just wanted to occasionally turn down the fans. the high speed would be the way to go. Its one of those maddening things you cant really know until you hook it up and try it out.

are loons much better than the antec tri-cool fans? i know they are quieter and such but do you guys think its worth it to buy em?

Worth it? Their CHEAPER! If you mean to replace tri-cools, its only worth it if your dissatisfied with your tri-cools as it is.

Yes. I could hear the TriCools. I can't hear my Yate Loons. They push more air as well. There is zero downside, and it's like... $15 for 4 of them, as opposed to Scythe S-Flex's at $15-18 a piece. Crazy.

I just bought 4 of the fastest RPM ones to go with a controller. I'll let you know how it turns out.

BTW I bought these to replace some high rated (and cheap but not as cheap as the Yate Loons) Apevia's I bought off newegg for $5 each. The apevias are mediocre, well below the claimed CFM, and they make annoying pulsating whirring noises.

I think you'll be very happy. I was surprised, considering the price, but knew with all the raving that tends to go on around here about them that /something/ must be going on.

Here's my take on this, based on my recent/current experience and my particular setup...

- I have an Antec P182B case (it's actually the P180B model, with all the 182 changes).

- In addition to the 3 Tri-Cools (all set to "low", 5v setting), I also added a Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 to the front mid-section intake (it runs @ 12v).

- Tri-Cools @ 5v turn roughly 870rpm

- I replaced the Tri-Cools with 3 Yate Loon D12SL-12 fans, running them @ 12v

- The YLs are rated at 1350rpm @12v, but I have one of them on a Fan Mate II controller, which drops the speed to ~1264rpm on full (the fan mate eats a volt, so the fan only gets 11v at full speed).

...the net result is that my system is "slightly" louder than before (not annoyingly so), but since the fans are spinning faster than the Tri-Cools were at 5v, all of my temps dropped roughly 2C. In short, it's a much better path to getting a bit more airflow than turning any of the Tri-Cools up to medium speed (they are just too loud at that speed for my tastes).
