Yahoo is getting back into the status of an industry leader and in one area they already have a market cornered: shutting down services. When Marissa Mayer came on board, she promised to streamline the operation and she certainly has made good on her promise. Five more products and services will get the axe on April 30th. As of June 3rd, all old versions of Yahoo Mail will no longer be available, so prepare to make the switch to the new Yahoo Mail.
 
I'm sure when Fantasy Football is all thats left it'll be able to sustain 30000 employees
 
I had a yahoo account years ago. Anything lost in this is just lost, I don't even know the password anymore (if any of it still works anyway). Many of the people I know turned their yahoo email into junk mail collectors for times when an email addy was required but it wasn't all that important. Maybe this will finally get rid of all those bots in their system.

Aw, pooh! I hated the "new" Yahoo mail with all its damned "features." You had to go in and turn them all off individually, otherwise use of a "feature" automatically gave them permission to share your personal info with their "partners."

I've never heard of any of these services, other than the mail and I thought the old interface went out 5 years ago.
 
Hated the new Yahoo Mail layout too. I've always though it's just different interface, with less useless features. Not sure what's the big deal keeping the old interface up.
 
The "old" yahoo mail is clean, simple and intuitive. The "new" yahoo mail is cluttered with crap. It takes time and effort to turn off all the garbage so it resembles and functions something like the "old" yahoo mail.

I prefer my programs to perform ONE function simply, quickly and easily. If I need to access data of another type, I'll launch another application that adheres to the same principle I mentioned earlier. Am I being stupid thinking this? :confused:
 
I hate yahoo mail. I don't use their search engine. I don't know many people who "yahoo" something when they want to search. How are they alive exactly? The only thing I can think of that they lead in usage is yahoo chat.

Yes their popularity is dropping but it's not as bad as people have made it out to be.
 
I don't use yahoo mail, but everyone I know who does uses their classic mail.

Looks like another company that thinks they will make new customers by pissing off their existing ones.

Everyone I know uses the classic mail as well, because it's better.
 
what yahoo need to fix is the currant free rain on yahoo mail accounts

what is happening is users yahoo accounts are just simply been Accessed like there is no password on the yahoo account, in the activity log you see first it is accessed using mobile then right after that mail access log happens then scans all email messages to harvest the addresses and then spams all of them once (i have secured 2 users accounts twice now and they are still spamming me)

whats worse Sky in UK have now moved from Google to Yahoo mail that in it self was an big cockup, are most likely compressible as are BT UK yahoo mail accounts as well

Wow, #1 for news? I had no clue.

I sometimes visit yahoo news when I'm checking my email. It reminds me of bing vs. google in the search engine wars. I usually use google news and it's mostly text with tiny pics, but yahoo news has all these big pics...
 
Yahoo also runs ABC news sites, and a lot of ISP homepages default to Yahoo links, although it's not always obvious. Anyhow, they average around double what CNN (#2) does in unique visitors monthly. CNN users tend to stay on the site longer though.

I'm sure they're getting those stats from gaming the system one way or another. Yahoo is a piece of shit all around.
 
Ok I just went through the trouble of switching to the "classic" version. I really don't get what's better about it. It feels a little slower than the new version (though it's very close) and the newer version opens each mail in a different tab, which I like. I don't use yahoo's video site, but I do use them for stocks and if I actually had a home page, I'd use my.yahoo, but since I just open tabs and go where I wanna go, I rarely see anything other than that or search results -- I'll don't get why anyone goes to yahoo.com or google.com. Bing at least has very good pictures every day, but I don't go to it very often either.

Yahoo search has been a rebranded version of Bing since ~2009 I believe.

You could probably get away with a user agent switcher plugin to accomplish that.
 
I have two yahoo email accounts. One for spam bucket, one for friends and some personal business. The old interface WORKED. It was simple, clean and had low overhead. The new one is a giant piece of shit. Half the time it doesn't work. Thankfully, the pop/imap interface via a smart phone/device works just fine. Also, are they *ever* going to fix instant messenger?
 
Their email and IM has a lot of potential, but they are totally squandering it focusing on a lot of nonsensical addons.

I do wish they would make a clean email interface, and fix their bloated IM client. Of course I haven't used it in ages, I just use Pidgin.
 
Well they can't take down the spam/junk mail filtering server since that thing was never put in place:rolleyes:
 
You guys are definitely doing something wrong. Aside from some tabs, there's just not that much difference between the layout of the classic and new UI. What UI problems do you have with the new one?

As far as spam, well over 99.9% of spam goes directly to the spam folder. I doubt i get more than 2-3 spam messages in my in box/week, and that's on an account I've had for 14 years. A newer one that I rarely give out anyone but friends and family gets less than a dozen/year.

Its slower than shit. Too many clicks to do anything and each click has a big delay.

You are right about the spam filter, its fairly effective.
 
I actually recently starting used yahoo mail and chat... since about a year ago. I agree it's cluttered as all fuck compared to others, but I'll stick with it because it's more a hassle to setup a new account somewhere else. I only use the chat because some of my friends use it and it's free to call like skype... seems to be more reliable then skype IME too.

I don't see the delay. The click bit is only an issue for one thing (may or may not affect all browsers): unchecking an email (for moving, deletion etc) often fails on the first click or two.

That's a pretty bad bug (though one that only affects me if I'm way behind on mail.

What gets me, is that there are bugs in the new interface. Really, how hard is it to simply try a product like this before releasing it? The click thing when getting rid of all the spam but one that I want to keep is way too obvious, how did they miss this? Idiots. It's stuff like this that make me secure in knowing that most big companies are run by guys with their heads up their collective asses.
 
To me, yahoo has one of most annoying ads (flash) on the web. They slow down their own web sites.
One thing I used on yahoo is yahoo sport, which is one of the best on the web.
 
I have one critical old e-mail left on yahoo and I need to get the mail out of there. Its a huge block of old e-mails. Looks like I'm stuck paying to upgrade so a I can get pop access. :/

Although the value of me rescuing them goes down the longer I procrastinate.

Huh? There's a "Not Spam" button that's pretty obvious (to anyone that uses the new Yahoo interface and goes into the spam folder). For the record, until just now, I always just delete everything on one account. And the other never gets spam, because only friends/family have it.

noscript or one of the flash blocking addons takes care of that. I never see flash ads on Yahoo (or anywhere else).

Try Zimbra Desktop... It allowed me to transfer my yahoo email over to my gmail account with out have to upgrade to their Mail Plus service. Worked pretty flawlessly.

Cite your source. I find it hard to believe that Yahoo is #1 for news on the Internet.
 
Yahoo need to improve their news reporting, period. Most articles are littered with spelling mistakes, and a lot of articles are vapid fluff.

As I mentioned before, a lot of ISP homepages get their news from Yahoo, which adds to the total, and their problem is dropping market share in search, not losing money or as some people here and on crap blogs keep insisting 'going out of business'

Most stories are wire stories. Those mistakes likely come from AP or Reuters. Your local paper has the luxury of editing and proofing the story. Yahoo gets a feed from the wire and it goes up on the site.

If you ever read Roger Ebert's online columns there were mistakes that never made it to the print edition, and he had an online editor.
